- Let us go over all the US state flags, learn some cool facts, keep the ones I like and attempt to redesign the ones that suck. I’ll also highlight some of my favorite redesigns on Reddit and mention their creators

The best thing about your redesigns is that you do not reject maximalism, so these flags look like actual flags rather than corporate logos
Agreed, while I appreciate the new wave of state flag redesigns, they can sometimes be TOO simple. Minnesota is an example of this to me, as the flag that originally won the redesign looked great before it was sent through the bureaucratic ringer and became soulless. I’m not sure if its controversial to say their new flag isn’t so great, but I think it’s an example of minimalism taken too far.

Yes! The “flag rules” work for country flags, which are meant to be iconic and memorable, but for states and cities it’s dumb to limit the designs. These new redesigns are great!
Thats the only problem with Utahs flag. It looks like a company logo.
Louisiana flag redesign actually had me gasping with how much it was accomplishing without being too busy.
I think the whole North and South flag matching for the Dakotas would an awesome idea.
What’s better is they correspond with the colors of North Dakota State University and South Dakota State University. My only reservations with it is I would exchange the arrowhead out for the medicine wheel or another symbol more symbolic to the tribes located in each state.
i love that nevada flag redesign... but you gotta admit that the two coolest words you can put on a flag is battle and born

For Pennsylvania, you should add in a keystone shape. Its nickname is the “Keystone State”.
Honestly that's what I expected, but I actually don't hate the one he went for, it's simple, yet still unique

Pennsylvania State colors are midnight blue and navy gold. Their flower is the mountain Laurel and tree is the hemlock. State dog is the great Dane. However, I would have incorporated the two teamster Morgan horses somehow. They're the only cool thing on the flag.
The Louisiana redesign would actually make me want to move there so I could fly it, which is saying a lot for a state that I don't even like to visit.

I personally don’t like out flag, his redesign was good however I’ve seen the flag that he used before and I didn’t like the blue going into the fleur de lis, it would be so much better without that
My one complaingt is that modern vexolligists love CGP-Greying their flags into corporate looking slop. Its not bad to have detail, just keep it with in a certain boundary before you get to realistic, but avoidibng complete minimalism+
I don’t think I’ve seen so many excellent flag redesigns in one video- I love how you used others’ ideas and credited them. Being a Hoosier, I’ve always thought Indiana had a higher quality flag than most, but most flag review videos throw it in a D at best and F category. I appreciate you valuing it!

nah seriously, i am not remotely close to indiana, if the user doesn’t give it away. but their flag is pretty awesome. theirs and south carolina i feel are constantly undervalued
honestly its odd to give it such a low position when its one of the few flags that isn't a seal on a bedsheet.
While writing Indiana on the flag is a tad on the nose, it's largely inoffensive and doesn't drag it down. Indiana's flag is leagues better than the seas of seals on bedsheets
Pennsylvania's flag still really needs to have the Keystone symbol in it, it's a huge part of the state's imagery.
flags are one of the rare things where simplifying it actually improves it (referring to the trend of companies changing their logos into circles )

As someone from Louisiana, I personally don’t find it that good, the fleur de lis has that blue dripping into it which don’t really like

I liked the redesigns of the flags of Hawaii, Kansas, New Mexico, and I also had the same idea when I redesigned the flag of Florida.
That Louisiana one with the bird and the Fleur is phenomenal
Most of the redesigns are very good but the Louisiana redesign is fantastic.
It’s always nice to hear somebody realize the Indiana flag isn’t just a seal on the bedsheet
9:58: North Carolinian here. Absolutely not. I saw someone else replace the words on the left with a cornucopia and 12 stars. That was much better.
I think replacing the words with a stylized Wright Flyer.
Yeah, that was the main design he made that really stood out as bad. The other designs he came up with/found were good, just not that one at all

Missed opportunity with the PA redesign to use the keystone symbol.
Also, it's commonly accepted our state colors are blue and gold.
This redesign was just boring and bad tbh

For Kentucky, you want to show the connection to "blue grass" and also have stripes that are wavy in homage to a horses mane as it runs since Kentucky is the home of The Kentucky Derby, and many race horses are bred and raised in the Lexington KY region
I really like a lot of these flag Redesigns you did a fantastic job on digging up state symbols and history you are seriously underated. I also love redesigning state flags!
A fantastic video. I love seeing the creativity behind all your redesigns or the cool designs invented by other people. It was great to learn something new about the states and their symbolism. It's somewhat brave to make a video like this as any content involving discussions over designs is practically begging to have the Comments section filled with nitpicks and opinions.
And speaking of, here's mine... In all seriousness though, I like the symbolism of adding the green for forests, blue for lakes and rivers, but my take is once you repeat it too often, it loses its impact and becomes less distinguishable from other similar ones. Just as we currently have a dozen or so flags that are simply state seal on blue background, having a bunch of flags that use some combination of green and blue to represent their land and water features (or that include state flowers) will become vary same-y.
I’d love to see a map of the US with these flags for the states (like what he did for the Australia video). I bet there’s a lot of blue/green in the north and red/white/blue in the southeast. Like a regional motif.
The only problem is they tried in Minnesota and almost everyone hates it

I'm also glad you like the new flags of Utah and Minnesota. I was officially involved with both of those final designs as an expert advisor, so I'm glad our efforts have paid off.
Ohioan here, I am very happy that you appreciate the unusual shape as well. I feel compelled to riot whenever someone tries to mangle it into a rectangle, especially without any allusions to the distinct current shape.
New Mexico’s alternative turquoise background looks even BETTER than the current yellow!
the pennsylvania flag literally should just be a keystone symbol.

PLEAAAASE i need New York State to get a new flag so bad. Big fan of the one you made here! Before you added the orange, I was going to bring up the dutch influence and then boom- you added it: perfect!

I think the Rhode Island flag was very good as is. I would remove the ribbon, slightly enlarge and center the anchor, and make the background a contrasting dark color.
I started the video thinking I would just watch a few. I watched the entire thing because frankly you've got a talent for this. Almost all of your redesigns are a definite improvement over the current designs. I like how you explained your rationale for using the colors and shapes that you chose. Good job.

That Washington state redesign the 3 diamonds and 2 lines also seem to be alluding to the Washington coat of arms which is awesome. Alot of symbolism for one flag.

Not only do I love all his state redesigns (Especially NY) his attitude was so amazing! There was another guy who did redesigns and he was super arrogant and critical of different states.
My only change would to be to add the word hope on the RI flag as it’s been a big part of the culture.
I like the way your designs for North and South Dakota mirrored each other. I think you should do something similar for Vermont and New Hampshire, the green mountain state and the white mountain state, respectively.
As a FL resident, we would redesign the flags ourselves, but we keep of getting eaten by gators before we could.

PA is the Keystone State. Put 6 diagonal slashes through the flag alternating between red white and blue. Put the Keystone in the middle with the colored slashes going through the Keystone and voila!
The redesigns look good.
As a Canadian there's a few redesigns I would like to see up here.
A few years ago, there was a redesign for the Maple Leaf which put blue bars down the flag between the red and the white. It was called the "Union Flag". The blue was supposed the represent Quebec.
Ontario still uses a Red Ensign (similar to the pre-Maple Leaf Canadian flag) that is rather 'uninspiring'. I could see something incorporating the provincial flower, the white Trillium, on a blue and green background.
Some of the other provinces could do with a redesign too, though my favourite is Newfoundland.
I’m making one for Canada’s provinces and territories right now and hopefully will release it next soon. I’ve done something similar for Canada’s best city flags too
One of very few things I like about Utah is that my state made a good flag eventually

As a Kansan, I am particularly impressed by the colors you used on your redesign, and the use of the swallowtail to subtly highlight the state's name was very clever. I also find a certain ironic charm to it, given that my Dad is from Ohio.
One design element that I have seen pop up in Kansas flag redesigns is to give the sunflower 34 petals in reference to it being the 34th state.
The redesign for the Louisiana flag you showed is so beautiful and meaningful, it would be criminal for them not to adopt it!
okay legit can't wait for some time in the future on one of those flags of the states of the US video and then it end on every state having a cool/badass flag.
At first I wasn’t so sure about redesigning Louisiana’s flag since I think it’s quite nice as is, but WOW that design is incredible! They need to adopt that flag immediately!
For California you could put the text in the red bar and make the bear a bit bigger
I would ditch the text completely and instead silhouette the bear in red, make it larger, and add 31 stars in an arch over the bear in red, representing California as the 31st state.
EDIT: I would incorporate gold somewhere in the flag too, due to the California gold rush and the Spanish settlers

To be fair, pretty much only Utahns hear about what goes on in Utah. Or cares about what goes on in Utah.
One thing is clear...you know A LOT about state history and geography! Well done. I can't imagine a more fascinating run-down of good options for state flag changes.
1:55 Yeah, we really do fly it proudly, We fly it right next to (or under) the American flag so wherever you see an American flag here you’ll probably see a Colorado flag nearby
I checked the comments, and I'm so glad that a lot of my fellow Pennsylvanians insisted on a Keystone. Anyone who has lived here long enough knows how much they're used.
Pennsylvania is called the keystone state so add a keystone shape in the flag
This may or may not be intentional, but for the Virginia flag (13:01) the Red 'V' on the white background is reminiscent of a Marlboro Cigarettes packaging, symbolizing the major tobacco production that was the state's lifeblood for many many years. I think that may have been accidental but it is funnily fitting.

I've been following Maine flag discourse for years, but I've never heard anyone talk about that symbolism in the pine tree design! It's kind of cool, even if it is likely a coincidence.
Though I will note that the new design that was officially selected a few days ago does have some (confirmed deliberate) symbolism of its own: sixteen branches for sixteen counties.
PA needs the Keystone symbol.

Us Delawareans actually like our flag because it’s one of the few “seal on a bedsheet” flags that actually works and looks good and is distinguishable.
These are so fucking good man only problem I have is w the New York one that you did, I would’ve done a vertical tricolour of purple white and orange for the Iroquois English and Dutch

Washington should go with the Cascadia flag. Its already everywhere, and it's simple.
Louisiana’s redesign is a banger! Send it to Gov. Landry to approve please.
The Florida flag background should be a light blue, for the surrounding water, except for possibly the northern quadrant, which could be green, for the swamps.
Whichever flag it was that had the grapes you disrespected pretty hard by removing the color from the grapes and vines when you did the redesign. It looks like Bunnicula got to them in the transition.
I really like the Louisiana flag as-is, but that proposed redesign is awesome.
As a NH resident, I can't say I like that redesign. I don't like the current flag either, but locals would probably prefer to have the Old Man of the Mountain silhouette, and perhaps include the state slogan of "Live Free or Die" (though, I'd rather there not be text).
The only change I would make to the Oklahoma redesign is maybe red for the bottom half instead of green. We have red dirt and not a lot of places can claim the same.
Kansas should just be a sunflower with 34 pedals, on a navy field with maybe 1 other symbol. Keep it simple. It was orginially proposed as a banner that fly vertically.
As a Californian I was about ready to throw hands for three seconds when you removed the text 😅
As someone who lives in Brooklyn I forgot all about upstate and thought the city would be centralized in the flag 🤦🏾♀️
I like almost all of your ideas except I would leave North Carolina's alone. I think the state flags are long overdue for a redesign.

Personally I think Vermont should just use the Green Mountain Boys flag. The irrelgular placement of the stars and its colors make it unique not to mention the flag’s history
You inadvertently made the Marlboro logo upside down on the Virginia flag, which is a terrible/hilarious coincidence considering Altria (formerly Philip Morris) is the massive global corporation that has controlled Virginia's state politics and economy for the last century through the power of tobacco and cigarettes. Ironic, as they are the kinds of tyrants our Lady Liberty in the seal should be fighting against. Maybe give the commonwealth's flag another try?
(As a Virginian, I think I can speak for many of us and say we actually quite like our flag, as the state seal is probably the best in the union. A badass lady warrior/philosopher with her tit out, standing over a dead tyrant, with the words "thus always with tyrants" scrawled under her in Latin? Incredibly based, and very hard to top with the possibility of an over-simplification for a flag.)
This Virginian couldn’t agree more. I generally do not like seal on a bedsheet flags, but ours is instantly recognizable. I proudly display it at my home.

As someone from NC, I didn't really like the one you came up with. I think a redesign should incorporate a three sectioned motif, for a few different reasons, but mostly for it's geographical areas. We have clearly defined mountain, piedmont, and coastal regions, all of them having similar, but distinct, cultures and major city centers.
I loved the idea for Delaware and for Kansas they look incredible

New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado have the three best flags. I think Utah is up there too, so the Four Corners have a monopoly on excellent flags.
I’ve always been a proponent of simplifying flags to shape and color. Loved this!

@@Kedai610I would argue that many of the flags on this video are still soulless corporate flags. Not quite as bad but to me the Mississippi direction is a better choice than the Minnesota or Utah redesigns.

The trouble with symbolizing counties in New England is that counties don't serve much of a purpose -- almost all governmental functions are at the "town" level.
My mom is a Wisconsinite and she still loves the old flag after showing her the redesign😒
Wisconsin has one of the worst flags in the union in my opinion
Nevada should just adopt the burning map from the beginning of Bonanza as their flag
I'm from Ohio and I really wish we could have a rectangular flag. Keep the pennant one for certain situations only, like if it's being flown on the same pole under a US flag.
I love almost all of these redesigns
But I would Change North Dakota’s redesign cause I saw a different one that looked pretty good, it was a Dark blue background with the spike thing, and for South Dakota it was the same, but flipped upwards and a light blue background
And I saw a good Connecticut design that had a shield of Grapes.
The Hawaii redesign looks like one of the Baltic SSR flags ( 3:35 )

In Pennsylvania.. we are quite happy with our current flag. the symbolism is great
California: ugh Texans are so obsessed with their era of independence whatever.
Also California: CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC (was independent for less than a month)
Cool video, but why most of your redesigns have so terrible resolution? For example North Carolina (10:00) is a joke.
Id definitely say nice work, I admire the use of the green mountain boy constellation, tho I do have to ask. Why not put the constellation in the corner to parrelell the old flag?

I will definitely say as a New Yorker, we really prefer focusing on Dutch origin, likely to make us feel special? Regardless, I doubt we'd ever have a St George's Cross on a state flag. I do really like the coloring for the Iroquois, though!
