The Breeders
In the mid 80’s Kim Deal would join the band Pixies. While she didn’t know how to play bass she would learn the instrument. But several years after joining the group she felt confined, unable to express herself musically. By the late 80’s she’d go form the group The Breeders, while still in Pixies. Today, let’s take a brief look at the band The Breeders.
The story of the breeders begins with identical twin sisters Kim and Kelly Deal. Raised in Dayton Ohio, where they would be exposed to the likes of led zeppelin, the who and aerosmith, but it would be a friend of Kim’s from the west coast that sent her the tapes of bands that would truly influence their future musical creations - Susie and the banshees, sex pistols and elvis costello. Unlike so many rockstars who grow up in broken homes or move around a lot, neither of this happened to the Deal sisters who came from a stable upbringing. Their father was a physicist while their mother worked with children.
The sisters would eventually form a duo and start covering country tunes. Kim would play guitar and sing, while kelley would harmonize. Kim and kelley didn’t strive to become musicians initially, with Kim going to college and getting a 2 year diploma in biology. Kelly meanwhile, would join the military working at a local airforce base. Kim would get married to a man named John Murphy and relocate to boston working at a science lab. It was during this time she saw an ad for the band Pixies who were looking for a bass player, but she didn’t play bass, but she quickly learned. Her sister Kelley almost joined as the drummer, but things wouldn’t work out. Despite being alternative darlings and many, Kim felt underappreciated in Pixies, despite being many people’s favourite member and writing one of the pixies popular tracks gigantic. It was on the tour with Pixies Kim would befriend throwing muses guitarist Tanya Donnelley and they bonded over being creatively stifled within their respective groups. They planted the initial seed of starting a new group together dancing and drinking after a Sugarcubes show in Boston. Deal would tell the LA Times
“I said, ‘Ooh, Tanya, I got a great idea--we need to make a dance song and we’ll be cool and rich. We’ll be disco queens.’ Donnelly would add “We started it and figured out we couldn’t do it for beans. We had no idea what to do. But then Kim had all these songs and we just decided to do that instead.”
Following the release of Pixies hugely influential record 1989’s DooLittle, frontman Black Francis sought to go solo for a little bit giving Kim the perfect opportunity to put together her own band with Donnelley. Calling themselves the breeders, the band would be formed in 1989. The idea for the name came to kim one day who was at a bar and overheard several gay men talking about a straight man who walked into a bar using a derogatory term “breeder”. Enlisting Surfer Rosa producer Steve Albini, the original lineup of the breeders consisted of Tanya Donnelley on guitar, Josephine Wiggs on bass, and Britt Walford on drums. Wiggs who played in the english band perfect disaster had met Kimduring one of Pixies tour of Europe and hit it off. Deal wouldn’t play bass in her new band though, doing vocals and playing guitar because as she told one publication, she was a guitar player at heart. Playing with Pixies, she already had an in with the label 4AD and they soon nabbed a recording contract. It was in 1990 the band put out their first record Pod, which was recorded and mixed the album in 11 days. The album got some traction thanks to their cover of the beatles tune happiness is a warm gun, which got some attention on college radio. Also landing the band on many people’s radar was the fact that nirvana’s kurt cobain was a huge fan of the band listing pod as one of his favourite albums. What’s funny is that a lot of the press reports around the time of Pod coming out painted the Breeders as a side project for Kim, and there’s quite a few publications labelling them a supergroup. Kim definitely didn’t consider the band a side pproject telling a pub - เพลง
I was able to go backstage at a Breeders show in Atlanta. She had lost her purse, which i found and gave to her. She gave me a signed Mountain Dew can. It was a good time. It was my first time being backstage like that.
Terrible trade.
@@toddmorrissey8372haha’ yeah totally’ 😂
I feel like "signed Mt Dew can" is something I don't want to look up.
You stole it though, didn't ya? 😊
That’s a great one!! Looks like she likes to autograph drinks. In San Diego she gave me a signed cerveza Modelo bottle!
Kim Deal is a national treasure. i love the breeders. always have. i saw them play back in 18 and they were amazing. great video! thanks !
Saw them open for Nirvana November 93 in Philly. They were one of many opening acts for Nirvana. The crowd went berserk at Cannonball.
cool, i saw them in Montreal at Lalapalooza with the smashing pumpkins ; awesome festival
Same, in St Paul a month later.
Cannonball was an amazing 90’s classic! So catchy.
The Amps - Pacer is an AMAZING album.🙌
Criminally underrated album.
The Breeders are an AMAZING band. I think my favorite song of theirs is “Saints”. My husband grew up in Dayton Ohio and ran in to Kelley years ago in a bar. She was sitting alone and he asked her when they were gonna come out with another album. She said that they were working on it and that it would be soon, but it wasn’t lol.
Saints, and No Aloha, push come to shove. I'll always love this band. There are various other fabulous tunes, but those 2 really stand out for whatever reason(s)
saints is my favourite breeders song too, love it to bits.
I just learned about "Saints" after watching an episode of "Resident Alien"... I fell in love with The Breeders all over again after finding the vid online!
As I age out I find myself listening to them more than I ever did in the 90’s It brings me back to the happiest days of my life. Though my life is pretty good today too.
Music largely sounds like overproduced trash nowadays, so you're not missing much.
The benefit of now, vs the 90s, is that anything you want to hear you can hear instantly, without paying $10-20 for a single album, which was a lot of money in the 90s.
Saw them open for Foo Fighters earlier this year and they still kick ass!
Pod is a landmark record and always in heavy rotation at our home. Steve Albini’s minimalist engineering and Britt’s (Slint) drumming make for a timeless listen.
In 1993 I got drunk for the first time in my life. I passed out in front of someone’s TV-set while the Breeders’ Cannonball was blaring out on MTV. 🤘👍🤣
Saw The Breeders with Lucious Jackson at the Opera House in Toronto back in the fall off 1993. Great great show
Great stories venue too! Saw Nirvana & The Melvins there in old '91, & The Jesus Lizard in, I think, 1993. Love that space! 🦃
Aw, I bet that was a good show. Lucky!
Ive always loved divine hammer over cannonball
My dad was a commander at Wright Patterson AFB in the '80's....that area is pretty much a hole, especially after growing up overseas mostly. Was back there in August for the 1st time in years, hasn't changed
I LOVE The Breeders, Title TK is my favorite record, produced by Albini, is an underrated masterpiece!
The Deal sisters and Tanya Donelly. My 90s crush trifecta.
I remember this band pretty well. Always wondered what happened thanks for the video
Meet Kim and Kelly at a datyon restaurant! Very nice and sweet!
Great info and research. Thank you. I wandered my way through Pixies history and then stumbled upon The Breeders. I was alive in the 90s but apparently living under a rock. Wow, what a story! Minor correction in your video, the 2018 album is "All Nerve" not "Last Nerve", unless I missed something.
I was wondering when you were going to do a video on the breeders. Thank you.
Best show I’ve ever seen: Pixies, OG lineup. Asbury Park, NJ.
The Pixies just aren’t the same without her
Yeah I agree. It’s not the Pixies without Kim
As good as Paz was and whoever replaces her of course we wish well, this statement is very true.
The Amps album is my favorite 90s album. It’s criminally underrated.
Great video as always. Some real nuggets in here! Also, never seen that Sugar Cubes pic before.
These guys are coming to Australia next year and I got tix!!!
I saw them open for Arcade Fire a few years ago. Good stuff
I just saw then in Brooklyn Aug 2023 sounded great saw them also in Nov 1993 opening up for Nirvana saw them 5 times love them
Great band with a lot of talented people.
Driving on 9 is a beautiful song.
I bought the first two albums by the Breeders when they came out. I didn't know they were fairly popular until recently.
Kim is an amazing all around musician with a unique voice.
I met them at work at Indigo in Wellington and they were delightful. A dream.
In the mid-nineties I worked at a record store in St Paul, MN and Kelley used to come in quite a bit. She was such a sweetheart. Still is, I'm sure! I was always happy to see her.
I love the song Saints ~ Sober is ready when you are!
I did listen to Pod by Kurt's recommendation. Lyrically not that great but it was good music
Summer is ready
I met The Breeders at The Glass House in 2000ish? Idk I was 10 and it was such a fun experience, they were all so kind.
That first album was great. Kim always seemed cool.
very cool band at that time....thanks for this.
Great video.
I met Kim at a bar called the Ritz in the mid nineties after Last Splash came out. It’s now Joe Rogan’s comedy club in Austin, TX. She stumbled in through the back entrance and seemed wasted and disoriented looking for a bathroom. I told her how I saw them on Conan O’Brien and how she had broken a string. She shouted “that was my Sister”, pushed me backwards and ran off…true story.
Saw them at Reading on the Sunday afternoon in 93. Glorious (yes) warm weather. They were amazing, even among a Sunday line-up full of bands I wanted to see. The bootleg recording I bought of the show is without doubt the best live recording - and most forceful, energetic performance - I have heard to this day.
I loved The Breeders. Such a great band
One of my favorite xhannels thank you!
My highschool gf moved to Texas just before graduation and took my Breeders tapes with her.
In the 90s every band had a drug problem unfortunately, even my favorite ones. The fact it took you content creating monotone drones 30 years to realize it was drugs says something important about rock music.
Cool, thanks. When’s the next album coming out though? I’m having withdrawals!
Love the Breeders! Always have...always will.
Title TK is so good ❤
1:16 …couldn’t play bass but quickly learned….how often do we hear that?
the entire music industry is a put up.
Bass is easy to learn.
@@eiephants if nikki sixx can learn it, so can any toddler
@@ImaRockStarPRso no-one can play it?
@@satansalley6526 everyone can be a rockstar bassist
She has never said she felt sidelined she always said her roll was the bass player in the pixies that’s it .
Summer is ready when you are 🤘
She worked in a lab??
Dayton! No wonder they were so original.
Saw them open for Nirvana in Jax FL but some clown in the crowd threw a shoe and it hit Kelly. Kim was pissed and took the band off stage just in their second song. Safari single was my first CD and still my favorite song along with Saints.
Super cool channel! I don't know if you've done video on this yet but one on the soundtrack album for the movie "Judgment Night", I think, would be fucking rad. Also more Alice In Chains vids to add to the many you have already lol. Thanks!
Thanks haven’t delved much into movie soundtracks
Without the breeders humanity wouldn’t exist.
I had such a crush on Kim Deal in the early 90’s 🖤🤷🏼♂️
I still have the biggest crush on Kim from the first time I seen her in the breeders I followed her around like a puppy for years
I’m her 2nd cousin 2x removed my grandma met them at a family reunion when they were 19 they are extremely close relatives to me.
I had a strange crush on Kim Deal back in High School. She wasn't Hot. She wasn't ugly. She had this F*ck You Way about her that I loved... Plus I loved the Pixies and The Breeders...
That look was probably a heroin stupor.....
That musta been cool going to high school with her.
I saw the breeders in Bay Town Texas Lollapalooza and they were so messed up they couldn’t get through the first song and then got booed off the stage.
I really wish they would record more new music. Sol Invictus is great! I wonder if those reunion shows the band had with Chuck did some lasting harm to the band.
Kim Deal is my second favorite Kim to play with the Pixies.
Saw them open for nirvana in 94. Decent enough I guess.
Me too in November, Philly. I thought it was 93 tho?
@sippinthatestus It actually might have been 93. It was in utero tour in Springfield mass. We snuck over the barrier into general population lol. Better than our nosebleeds.
Brit walford is sick as hell. Bit of a mouth breather tho
I like him just fine...
@@michelleneeds4165 don't get me wrong , he's a nice guy !
I like when Rock and Roll True Stories does a video on one-hit wonders like The Breeders or New Radicals.
The Breeders weren’t “one hit wonders”… what makes you think that?
@@kellyskloset350Probably cause they had one "hit". Just a guess.
@kellyskloset
@@freebird97hdSaints and Divine Hammer weren't juggernauts but got plenty of MTv play.
I think the Amps album is the best thing Kim Deal has done.
I like the Ewok-praying-to-C-3PO opening of that one song.. 😉
their latest album is not last nerve, its all nerve.
Britt could have a backstory about what he did from all of his bands like The Breeders and Slint
What is it with the musicians and narcotics... everyone thinks they can walk the line
The Deal sisters had too much fun in the 'Cannonball' video; and that's a good thing.
And I recall that Kim (because he had too much control) & Black Francis (because he was jealous of her popularity) mutually disliked each other.
I think it's more of a battle of two egos. Years ago, I figured it was just him....but in the ensuing years she had issues with multiple people as well. Some folks just don't play well with others. Lol.
I was pretty disappointed when I met Black Francis, and he was white. I got into k. Deal when she joined that band with Sebastian Bach. He was the lead singer of The Frogs when I saw them at Coney Island High.
Saw them open for Nirvana, nobody ever wants to say that Nirvana never had a big draw and were horrible live. The venue had a capacity of 1400 and was far from sold out, I loved the Breeders set, left after 3 and a half Nirvana songs.
Can you do static x
😮
Breeders > Pixies
All day long
If you want a great drum sound, listen to The Fall. Mark E Smith always teached his drummers how NOT to drum, and it sounds amazing! Or listen to krautrock bands like Can, Neu! or Guru Guru, they had amazing style too! And Joy Division had a great drummer. Less is often better than too much, same with the guitar, too much notes or virtuosity doesn't make it always better.
Last Splash is a fun album but rhat it outsold anything the Pixies made is ridiculous.
Now history has put the Pixies in their well deserved place as icons selling out arenas while The Breeders barely make any significant noise.
The harsh reality for Kim Deal's fans is that she wasnt that important in the Pixies except in her own mind.
what point are you trying to make lol?
Any subscriber ever noticed this channel’s narrator sounds a lot like Michael Cera ?
Just listen to what Frank Black has to say about working with her, I couldn’t do it!
“Frank Black” only rebooted the Pixies because he couldn’t make a good living as a solo act. Kim was held back in that band. Once she was out, I had zero interest
What has he said?
I thought the attention Kim was getting, was detracting focus on the Band. Never get a "hot" Bassist!
Where can we see what he said?
@@mnky75hot bassist?! BRUH
I’ve never heard of them 🤷♂️
Kim & Kelly are a 2 for 1 Deal.
I PLAYED ON DRIVING ON 9
THE BAND WAS EASY GOING AND VERY OPEN TO MY IDEAS ON THE SONG
CARLOS GUITARLOS 90042 USA
I liked "One Divine Hammer" way better.
Here's what I feel, just want girl as cool as Kim Deal.
I read an interview with Kim where she said Kelly played lead guitar in the the band because " she can't make chords." All attitude, no skill or talent.
❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Finally I’m a rock star….where’s the heroin?
Nantucket.
Succeeding in spite of themselves. Don't get me wrong, some GREAT music, some of the best of the era, but they seemed to fumble upward.
Is "Breeder" a bad word for real. I see a woman with 8 kids i say shes a breeder . Wow didn't know i was being mean. Thought i was pointing out a fact
Are the Deal sisters in any way related to Mick Mars? His real last name is Deal. They are from Ohio and Indiana, respectively, so, not that far apart.
Seems reasonable. Probably definitely if you go back enough generations.
I believe their parents were originally from West Virginia, though I'm not 100% sure
Saw them in 2006 and they were terrible!!!
Drunk off their ass, particularly Kim!
Sounds "fun" but it wasn't.
Kim let her friend go onstage and play a song they didn't rehearse while she smoked and drank on the side.
It was a disaster.
Good amount of people left including me and my friend.
However......I did see them in 93 at the real lollapalooza and the they were great.
The mosh pit starting doing a square dance to "Driving on 9" which was one of the most amazing things I'll ever see and wish I had a camera at the moment.
They did not look like rock stars. They looked like ordinary women.
Kim played guitar already, it is not like she didn't know how to play when she joined Pixies.
and they are nothing without her. 😁
sorry, Francis.
Didn't they have a great life according to your reporting. Why the heroin chasing?
What is it with bands and changing members like underwear ? Pehaps some body could . . . write a song ?
Kim in NOT my favorite member of the Pixies and gigantic is NOT my favorite song. in fact gigantic is one of my least favorites and I do love the Pixies. The Breeders are great though. I always like Belly too.
I’ve surprised Courtney Love didn’t go after Kim and Kelley because Kurt liked them so much, they are lucky to be alive.
One hit wonder !! Crap !!
the deals were privileged brats really, but breeders were a joke compared to pixies
A friend of mine saw the Breeders live recently, and sadly, she said they totally sucked.
I saw them live in August '22 and they were fantastic. I saw the Pixies on the Doolittle tour in '89, and again on their first reunion tour in 2004. Breeders, even in their fifties, are a much better live band.
@@7redrhino7 Thank you. That's good to hear. I'm a fan going way back but never saw them live. A girl asked me to see Nirvana with the Breeders opening once, but she stood me up and went with her gf. One of the biggest disappointments of my life.
The Breeders are better than Pixies. Change my mind.
Doolittle.
Don't care
Change your tampon
Totally agree.
Breeders send the pixies home on a stretcher brah brah
