Hurricane Ian Boat Recovery

  • After sitting on land for one month after Hurricane Ian ripped her from the dock and blew her ashore, TowBoatUS arrives in an attempt to lift Happy Ours off her perch in the neighbors yard and put her back in the water.
    The 60 ton crane was pushed to the limit. A 2006 Meridian 341 sport bridge weighs 18500 pounds dry. With fuel, water and gear it’s weight can be well over 20000 pounds. There was also an undetermined amount of water still trapped in the bilge due to the precarious angle the boat was sitting at. No one knew how much more that would weigh, and the distance from shore was an issue. Will it survive? Will it sink?
    Many thanks to the crew from TowBoat US who worked this feat!

    Thank you so much for capturing this harrowing recovery of _Happy Ours_ ! We may be a little biased, but we think our TowBoatUS teams are the best in the business. Your video really highlights the professional work they do. Thank you for putting your trust in us for so many years, and here's to getting _Happy Ours_ back on the water soon.

      Had BoatUS when I had a boat back the early 90 and they helped me out when my outdrive cooked on a weeked. The inside seal on the gimbal let go and all the bearings got toasted.
      They covered everything minus my deductible, of course, through the marina where I had my boat. They worked with the marina and I found out it was up and running the next weekend. They were bothgreat I never lost any time boating. Oh those were the days!
      Good luck with your boat maybe one day I'll have another but I just go on private charters now it's less worries.

      I doubt it went through much. The wind won't really hurt it, the water came up and broke it loose from its dock and set it on the land of the neighbors house. Not really much to damage the boat. If it didn't hit anything during this process it should be fine. I've seen boats discovered a half mile inland and they were ok. Sitting in a parking lot. They were lifted onto a flatbed and put back in the water.

    Thanks for sharing your experiences with fellow boaters. From far and wide, we other owners can feel some of your amazement and heartbreak in dealing with tragic events and damage to your vessel. While anyone, including boaters can by sympathetic, I think only other owners can truly appreciate the gravity of it all and how it can affect you. Wishing you great success and much future boating happiness.

    Cowboys in Action, nothing more, nothing less.
    Deck Edge Immersion is a critical factor in the loss of Stability and a really basic violation of how to operate ANY vessel.
    As for the land based crane rolled onto a barge, am all but certain zero consideration was applied to 'Derating' the crane for Dynamic Lifts. Standard lifting for such a crane is a 'Static Lift', which is what the Lifting Capacity of the crane is calculated for.
    Slapping on two chains to each of the outriggers and calling it 'good', is not in any manner an engineered solution.
    It is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured (or worse) with this style of management of such a hazardous operation.
    Yet, so many people will take the attitude "Hey, nothing went wrong, so 'you' clearly don't know what you are talking about".

  • @btasler
    @btasler ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So I would never tell them how to do their job but I've been a crane repair guy for 40 years now and I can say with ABSOLUTE certainty that this (and others like it) are *extremely* dangerous. The crane isn't made to do that one single bit. Furthermore, they had no solid knowledge of the boat's weight before they picked it.
    There are plenty of crane/boat fails online where the crane is properly set up and it goes bad anyway. That barge should at least have some basic spud poles to help keep it leveled better. They will eventually have a catastrophe. I have a customer that fell off of his pads 200 miles from home and woke up in the hospital with no memory of what happened. Yes he lost the crane it was destroyed. I have recovered more toppled cranes than any person ought to.
    It's nothing to play with, provided getting home is your objective.

    • @btasler
      @btasler ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Had one roofing company working at the airport on a hangar with a biggerish boom truck. He had his jib attached, articulated, and extended. The crane wouldn't pick his tearoff box so he basically dragged it off the edge of the roof then lowered it to empty it. They did that all day the first day then on the second or third pick on the second day it came down. The jib landed across the console with his hands still on the levers, then the rope hit him in the hardhat. It was a life-changing career ender. And, they lost that crane too.
      The wire rope hit the hard steel side of the boom so hard that it made almost like a wax mold of the rope in the steel. When I got there, all that was left was a bloody broken machine and responder trash. Incidentally, the investigation revealed his rated capacity was 1300 pounds in that position, and most crane stuff has a 3 to 1 safety ratio meaning if you are good for 1000, then 3000 will break it outright. He was rated for 1300, and his empty tearoff box came in at like 1200. His total load that broke the jib was 3900 pounds, exactly three times his rated capacity.

  • @wrangler065
    @wrangler065 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    ok so heres a question as a born and raised floridian, with the fluent hurricanes we have why hasnt those coastal marinas came up with a way for people with boats to bring their boats in so their big lifts can take them out the water set them on up the clear rutters and props then strap then down to hurricane anchors to keep tbem from blowing over at the homeowners dock and sinking...i mean i live in ocala,fl and when that last big cat5 came thru about 4 yrs ago i bought 4 4ft mobile home anchors and screwed then in the ground 2 on each side fron and back of my 20ft pro line bay boat on the trailer and put a 4 inch 12k lb strap across it and tightend them both down..we only got 50-60 mph wind when it came thru but i wasnt worried about it blowing away...surely I'm not the only person to think of that???

    • @AdventuresofHappyOurs
      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most marinas don’t have dry storage space around here and those that do could never accommodate the number of boats we have. Many people move their boats out of the area but you never know where it will until it’s too late. You are right about the anchors. That would save many a boat.

  • @survivalSC
    @survivalSC ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well Tow Boat US looks really good in FL. They are a joke if you need a boat brought back up if it went down in Charleston SC. I won’t even get into what a joke it was and then the bill for all the hours that they just did not do the job and then finally did it correctly. I think they just wanted to charge for the extra 5 hours. It was a joke.

    • @AdventuresofHappyOurs
      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tow companies charge from the time they are called and leave their station to to time they return to their station. So even if you were towed only an hour to your dock, it may have taken them 2 hours to get to you, then two hours to get back to their station. Adding up to 5 hours tow fees.

    I know how nerve wracking it can be to watch that. Our Catalina 42 (22,000 lbs) blew ashore in Hurricane Issac. It had a fin keel and it was resting perfectly straight up on that and the rudder, like it was in the yard, and had no damage. But, watching the crane and barge, pick it up and swing it back into the water, I know exactly how you feel. The barge and crane that picked ours up was about four times the size of the one they used for yours, but ours was a lot farther from shore, and watching that barge and crane lean over, like it did with yours, I didn't think it was going to work. But, it ended well. Congratulations on getting your baby back in the water. I know how good that feeling is, too!

    What a great video!! I couldn't even imagine how much a recovery like this costs and who pays for what?? That crane operator is not cheap, plus all the men and fuel costs, etc. They probably had to have a huge insurance bond in case they damaged the house. Does the homeowner where your boat showed up sue your insurance company for damage to the dock and yard, or is it not covered because of "Act of God". How much did it also cost to get the boat back in nice condition again? Quite an ordeal!!

    • @AdventuresofHappyOurs
      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thankfully I had good insurance coverage with BoatUS/Geico. They covered all recovery costs. Repairs are not covered fully due to age of mechanical parts and 10% hurricane deductible. Unfortunately, the act of god clause does shield the insurance company from the dock damage due to no negligence by me on the boats hurricane prep.

      Not sure what BoatUS would have charged for that as I had insurance that covered it but another crane company quoted me $20k

    I know there’s a lot of boats that didn’t make it . I glad to see this girl did . I’m hunting a outboard boat in the 18 to 20 foot range to salvage . Looking for a four stroke motor 100-115 horse power . I would like to fine center console , that I could rebuild the hull I have now . Could anyone tell me who I could contact for something like that ?

      Keep an eye on Facebook mart place in the southwest florida area. Or Craigslist. I have seen salvage sales there.

  • @robertneighbors4091

    The question is: Is insurance paying ? Or is the boat owner paying cash outa pocket ?
    Insurance co's are notorious for attempting to negotiate down prices, I refuse to deal with them at all when they have tried to "beat me up" on price.

  • @wrzl1675

    That crane noise is just the “safety lock” locking and unlocking at each safety point ( gear tooth). It’s done so that even if that crane lost all hydraulic pressure your boat can’t come crashing to the ground, in fact, it would be stuck hanging in the air until they fix the crane.

    I actually laughed when you said “I don’t like the sound of that” and hoping it didn’t damage the boat further…. She got tossed on land… I don’t think it would make a huge difference at this point 🤣

  • @eddieflueger4926
    @eddieflueger4926 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know why a crane operator would let his rigor stand right there in a pinch point next to his outrigger like that when he's listing that far.. the guy had no business being there. Also I imagine your listing chart probably ate up your capacity chart pretty fast at that degree of list. Did you turn the key?

  • @PaulKnox-fd9xi
    @PaulKnox-fd9xi ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In your narration you have not addressed the stability factor at all. The crane may have a rated lifting capacity, BUT, it is on a floating platform which can make it very unstable. Watch the wet water line on the barge change in your vid. Also the fact that you did not necessarily "move " the barge as you described, but you left one spud down and rotated the barge on that spud, helped sustain the stability of the crane on barge scenario. One has to assume Tow Boat US had a naval engineer overseeing this operation. It was not just pull up with your barge and pluck a boat off the beach. Good lift! well done!

    I like how the majority of the neighbor's boats were just fine and docked and yours floated away so easily.... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........... If I was your neighbor, I would be a little pissed.

    • @AdventuresofHappyOurs
      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was docked at a neighbors property while waiting for my dock to be completed. Unfortunately, my dock wasn’t completed before the hurricane and the dock I was at had no piling cleats and the lines pulled off the top when the short 3’ piling was submerged in the flood.

    • @AdventuresofHappyOurs
      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Every boat on my canal was damaged somewhat. Some sunk at the dock, some floated thru their canopy and damaged radar, ttop and tubing and some bent shafts and damaged hulls when the boats settled off the lifts bunks. It was a war zone here.

    Yay! So glad Happy Ours was recovered! TowBoat US did a great job, kudos to them and also your skillset. Be looking for to the repairs and I bet you can't wait to get it done so you can get out there. Hopefully you guys never have a hurricane like Ian again! On the positive side after the big trip to Cape Coral, it is probably good you will get the props, axels, keels, and underside cleaned up.
