If we were home on New Years Eve, we always listened to Guy Lombardo play at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Papa always said that one day we would go there for New Years. It's the only thing I ever heard my Papa say we would do, that unfortunately we never did. 💞
My dad played trombone with Mr Lombardo from 1954 until 1958. I’m looking as i’m Writing this at photos of my dad with Mr Lombardo... Thank You for giving us such wonderful music !!!
Remember seeing him at Otto's on nautical mile on water in Freeport around 79...there was a party going on with older people ,someone noticed him , and the whole room stood up and gave him a standing ovation, asked my father when I got home who GUY was....I was 17
My grandmother, Alma Dayton played piano for the Lombardo’s before they went to the USA. But because she was newly married couldn’t leave obligations to her family. I met Guy’s Mother and a cousin at my Grandparents. To me she was peter cotton tail’s mom
I would love to see the full clip of the part with Guy Lombardo on the Steve Allen Show where he does the South Rampart Street Parade song like seen in this documentary.
This was about the tether time I’ve viewed this documentary. The first time was when it aired on CBC-TV a decade ago. Lombardo and band have always been like gods for me; I never tire of their precision, clarity, dedication to the melody as written by the composers and songwriters. To see these superb musicians like Freddie Kreitzer and Buddy Brennan (Twin Pianos), that incredible sax/woodwinds section, incomparable brass section headed up by brother Lebert, and, of course, vocalist Kenny Gardner stirs up a lot of memories and simultaneously tears my heart out to know they’re gone and so is their glorious music. This is a marvelous collection of musical memories for those of us who have loved “The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven.”
Grew up in the same town as Kenny Gardner and remember him fondly. He was active in the community and people there mever made a fuss over him. A few times Guy Lombardo would show up at the july 4th celebration on the green. I grew up around major TV and film stars and was never "star struck" by anyone. I remember Guy & Kenny as very warm, caring people. Kenny was even a member of the Fire Dept too. He would always invite our family to the NYE celebrations in NYC. We would also go to all of the shows at Jomes Beach Theater. It was so cool to see the sets move in by boat too. Now the water that seperated the audience from the stage is now gone and covered over to allow more seats at the venue. So sad
What Dear loving human beings These folks wear. They were family Though not name. What wondrous days growing up in the 50s? What wonderous people what wonderous memories of love and fun and lessons? I am glad that in our hearts. We can carry them through memories Wondrous memories of the good old dand they where were everybody helped everybody everybody was a neighbor to everybody. Miss You guys forever, and thank you For the stability that you implanted into so many young people. We are still ticked off that they took the East Point. House down and replaced it with a garbage heap.
Some of the best memories I have are of my grandmother and I watching Guy Lombardo every new years eve. This was in Toronto Canada and now I am in London Ontario Canada. I wish she was still here so I could thank her and let her know that I now understand just how cool she was. At the time I didn't understand that she was listening to the hip music of her time as was I with Led Zeppelin. We often have now clue just how lucky we are at the time so if your reading this and you have someone older in your life please take the time to tell them how important they are to you. You only get one chance and a wasted chance is wasted time, but not if you have learned something from it. God bless.
We too lived more at their homes than our own. Home work look at tv. Eat. Church, food shop. Football, swimm off their docks. Climb their trees to eat fresh apples etc, they were more family than kin. They are still missed many still cry but they live on p Of many memories and the hugs we gave him, them when after the show would come right home to our new year hugs for them. These wonderful being will live on as long as there are thing like this show or folks putting stuff on net but most their goodness is still spread by folks like me all the teachings of goodness live on and still spread god folks dont die they just do a gig with god how sweet is that! J
Great show!I really enjoyed Kenny’s comments.A lot of feeling and actually eloquent.Guy’s comment addressing the university student body about knowing a little something about music is moving.
As a young boy, I loved his music. Now that I'm in my 70s. I still love it. As a native Long Islander. I'm proud that he made Long Island his home and brought so much enjoyment to us with his wonderful summer productions at Jones Beach. Although Guy and his band are gone, the memory of their decades of work has been preserved for us and future generations to enjoy. And "The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven" is now "The Sweetest Music In Heaven."
Here In London Ontario we are very proud of this man who brought nothing but fame to this little city. We lost Guy 42 years ago this coming November but he is ot forgotten They would play Port Stanley every summer for free
My Band Director Don Zentz played lead Alto with Lombardo’s (Ghost) Band. I mentioned Lombardo’s band to him, and he mentioned the constant use of Vibrato.
Refreshing to read of an entertainer who serves his fans. He knew they bought a record and then when they came to see him wanted to hear the same tune. The band was to be well groomed and dressed. In the pictures you see the band around the bus and properly turned out. Not looking like a bunch of bums. If you look at Kenny Gardner in WWII you will see he was an Infantry officer holding the Combat Infantryman Badge and a Purple Heart. A celebrity serving his country and taking his chances. Too bad the so-called celebrities don’t do that today. Willie Nelson could have learned a lot about presenting his music and himself by watching the Lombardo Band.
I have loved Guy Lombardo all my life I’m 94 seams like old times

I will be 41 on April 9th and have been a fan of Guy Lombardo since I was in high school. There was/is no better band anywhere in the world.
I would love to see the full clip of the part with Guy Lombardo on the Steve Allen Show where he does the South Rampart Street Parade song like seen in this documentary.
Great guy, great music. Class all the way. What more could you ask for?

Their glorious music is not gone.
A fine tribute to a true legend of American popular music

Give me his type of music any time to the music of 2020 but then i,d never down talk anyone,s right to listen to whatever they like.
What a wonderful documentary of a talented, beloved entertainer.
Guy Lombardo is a Canadian icon! I'm in my mid twenties and he is one of my favourites. Thank you for uploading this great video about him.
