An anthology of six stories by various authors, all of which centre around a mysterious, sinister or haunted room. The stories are already available on the channel as individual uploads if you prefer to listen that way, although I've taken the opportunity while producing this anthology to remaster and re-edit some of the older recordings. Story timestamps: 00:01:52 Number 13, by M. R. James 00:45:00 The Sealed Room, by Arthur Conan Doyle 01:19:25 The Room in the Tower, by E. F. Benson 01:58:54 The Red Room, by H. G. Wells 02:27:44 The Mystery of the Circular Chamber, by L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace 03:21:55 The Thing in the Upper Room, by Arthur Morrison Story teasers and more information can be found in the video description.
Thank you for your rendering of these several stories by some of the best writers of ghost and horror stories. When first I heard you reading, I pictured you wearing a three piece tweed suit smoking cap and rimless spectacles reading from a heavy leather covered book and sitting in a wing chair before a log fire and a pipe in your hand. As usual your reading is impeccable. Thank you Simon.
Simon Stanhope is for me, one of the best narrators of this decade. Thanks for all your good work Simon! Right up there with Jonathan Cecil, Hugh Fraser and David Suchet for my listening ear. Easy to listen to, no sudden loud noise, just good even reading. Modulation, timbre, rhythm all A+. Cheers
Hi there! it doesn't sound like you're reading the stories as much as that you're telling the stories, which is so much nicer, thank you for taking the time to share your talent with us
It was so wonderful to spend the evening with you again Simon. You escort me though time and space on the warm tones of your lovely voice and for that, I am grateful. ❤
Thanks for sliding The Sealed Room into this compilation Simon! Since I ritually listen to the other stories while waiting for your new ones, I appreciate a bit of acd that I’ve not heard before 💚 with those rosettes of lichen growing on the walls!
Glad to know you enjoyed it, Stephanie. It was actually on the channel for a long time but I took it down during my difficulties a couple of years ago, because I wasn't happy with the audio quality (it was one of my early efforts), so I took this opportunity to remaster it
Oh my god, it’s like you know when I’ve got to really get on with all. the. blasted. chores!! Roll on the morning when I can make a start (and I’m deliberately holding off til then of I’ll stay awake half the night listening to these and won’t even see the morning 🤣🤣) ♥️♥️
Thanks @Frenchblue8. No, I've not done a water-themed one yet, though I have it in mind. I just need to record some more stories... So far we have 'The Upper Berth', 'The Eight-Mile Lock', 'The Former Passengers'... need to do a few more to make a good anthology!
I missed this! So many subscriptions, I don’t want yours to get lost in the pile. I’m searching you out personally from now on. So good to have your work.
Well, I guessed that "The Room in the Tower" and "The Red Room" would be here. I couldn't think what the M.R. James story would be - Silly me! Anyway, this has been a great way to spend a chilly January Sunday evening.
Thanks Simon. Your comment prompted me to realise something... of all these stories, Number 13 stands out, inasmuch as it's the only one in which the narrative doesn't actually take us inside the eponymous room. All the action takes place in number 12! Anyway, glad to know you enjoyed it.
I'm really looking forward to listening to this anthology, including some of my favourite authors, MR James, Conan Doyle and Arthur Morrison. I've got most of the stories in paperback compilations, but it's going to be so good listening to you narrating them, thanks so much for uploading. UPDATE: enjoyed that very much, love your narration, Simon! Some I had read or heard before but there were some new ones, very intriguing and very good. 👍👍
It always gives me a little thrill when these authors reference each other. There's little doubt that Morrison's 'The Thing in the Upper Room' is making a call-out to Wells's 'The Red Room' with the 'story of a room haunted by fear'.
Ah yes indeed it does. I'd actually forgotten that connection until I re-listened while I was putting the compilation together, and it makes for a very satisfying link between the stories
Wonderful. I see you've recently joined as a channel member, thanks so much for your support. Do check out the membership tab for updates and bonus content
Wow. What a stunning attack, it seemed so positional then a barrage of tactics came out of ding, almost engine like style. Thanks for going into those interesting lines for us Jerry you're the best chesstuber. Been watching your videos for 10 years and you always help me learn something new👽🤜🤛👽
“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman would fit nicely with these stories. (Just showing off how erudite my literature chops are.) Great selections, thanks for posting. You’re a pretty good reader, too!
I would like to suggest the assembly of a potentially AWE-INSPIRING Acting Troupe! You, friend Simon. Ian Gordon of Horrorbabble, Jasper L'Strange of Encrypted, Mort, of Mortis Media, Otis Jiry of Chilling Tales for Dark Nights, as a Canadian/American voice, And as for the Ladies, I have been quite entertained by both Miss Worm, and Bethena! If you all could assemble, and find that you "mesh" properly, and "spark off one another", you would be one of the FINEST "Radio Acting Companies" ever assembled, at least to THIS American!!! (I must, at this point admit that I'm reacting to your post, Simon, about a collaboration between yourself and Ian Gordon of Horrorbabble, as mentioned in another video, which I seem to have more-or-less "lost" around here somewhere, and thus do I post it HERE! Cheers, Simon!)

I must admit that not to keen on M. R. James, he does tend to let his pen run away with its self.
strange how he poured himself some tea from a flask of coffee !!
That's the sort of amusing inconsistency I normally enjoy picking up on! But.... I'm racking my brains to think what story that occurs in. I can't recall any of the stories in this compilation mentioning a flask of coffee - which one was it?
