Fascinating and helpful conversation- thank you! I wonder if empathy could be better described as a ‘felt sense’ and spiritual discipline rather than as an emotional reaction to another’s pain. I see ‘conscious suffering’, which I understand, perhaps incorrectly, as a Buddhist or Bodhisattva practice, as different from possibly less helpful emotional commiserating.
My great uncle was called the most handsom man in the Greek Army. One time at a formal event Queen Sophia broke with protocol and kissed him, just to say she did. The handsomeness was not passed down.
Stoicism is saving me right now, as I grieve for humanity.
