chemical engineering student here! I don't have an XPS Plus specifically (I have the 2-in1 from 2020) and as much as I love my XPS, I wouldn't really recommend the XPS line in general now. yes, it's sleek (even mine, which isn't as cool as the 13 Plus but it's cool in its own right), the hardware's great but not without it's issues. TL:DR - if you can afford it and are okay with gambling with QA issues, I do recommend the XPS line. otherwise, I'd look at other laptops (like those mentioned in the third paragraph). first, Dell has been plagued by bad QA the last few years and unfortunately it's still an issue. XPS 15 and 17 models were having issues with the trackpad not registering clicks. not sure how prevalent they are with the smaller 13-inch models but I've had QA problems of my own - the power button doesn't work at all (even as a fingerprint sensor) and I had issues where the screen would just freeze and I'd have to reseat the battery. your mileage will vary but given the absurd amount of money we'd have to pay for one of these, it's scary to think how a lot of them just break one way or another. not to mention my battery life's abysmal but it's expected considering I have the 4K model, but I don't expect the 1080p model having *that* much better battery, at least compared to other laptops. speaking of how much we have to pay, I think that's my biggest issue... as a chemical engineering student at least, something less expensive would have done the job better for sure. *HP's Spectre* laptops, *Asus' Zenbook and Vivobook* lineups and even the new *Surface Laptop 5* would be a lot better value and they all cost A LOT LESS money than what you have to pay for an XPS. the model have costs SG$3,200 for an i7, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB of storage, but an i5, 8 GB ram and 256 GB of storage should suffice for students in my opinion. 256 GB storage should be okay if you can take advantage of cloud storage (which you can get through your institution, most probably), and 8 GB is good enough but 16BG RAM is not a bad idea. for the specs I recommended, it can run software like ASPEN Hysys, Autodesk Fusion360, Microsoft Visio and other software I needed for chemical engineering with no issue, and as long as your course's software isn't graphically intensive, it should be more than enough to help you get things done! overall, I feel like the XPS line is a premium for mostly having a super portable, sleek laptop with a top-notch screen and good keyboard, but I think there are so many other better laptops out there with a lot better value for similar performance and build quality :)
@@Spidr-Man for most students unless their course of study has specific software that needs more power, such as rendering 3D models for architecture and engineering, CAD for design, etc. my exposure’s only with Chemical Engineering but from my experience, even with our most intensive software, it runs perfectly fine. Looks like a really nice laptop, but as an ex-computer science student myself - not many students could afford laptops at this price range back in my day here in the UK (Could be due to high tuition fees) But the most common model I seen was either the 15.6” HP Pavilion or the 14” HP Pavilion and most of these had i5’s or below. I also seen a lot of older MacBook models. But yea, good review!
I appreciate this insight. We, in third world countries have it worse: these things tend to sell more due to taxes and freight. Right now, I have a thick Acer Travelmate issued by the University (I'm an instructor there) but because it's so damn heavy to carry around, I want to have a thin laptop for my own. I'm really looking into a good deal with the Huawei Matebook 14 (i5, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd) at around $700. Even then, I still have to think twice about it.
@Kepler 186-F cause sometimes i need the dgpu sometimes i don't And 13+ is just a lot lighter and easier to carry considering i don't need to bring the included charger and i can just use a 100W GaN charger i got from Costco for the 13+
