You can get to number 1 in the charts with a few thousand sales on a quiet week nowadays, so there is no way you're going to make any meaningful amount of money with those numbers, when you take into account recording, production, marketing, distribution costs etc. Touring and merch are the best ways to make income, though if your stage production costs are high, that obviously drives down any profits that may be made from touring.
I was only reading last week about how many artists are running at a loss with their live shows due to increased production costs, though that is a choice. It's probably why Ian Brown toured with a backing track and a naff light show the other year. A band like Polyphonic Spree wouldn't be able to exist nowadays, well, not if they wanted to earn any money.
Similarly, festivals like Glastonbury rely on the reputation of the festival to attract artists, as they offer them well below the going rate to perform, as little as one tenth of their usual fee in some cases, and sell it as if you will make money at the back end from BBC coverage and garnering new fans / sales off the back of their performance.
A band like Sleaford Mods should be able to earn a decent wage as they literally have a mic and a laptop, so live production costs are next to nothing.

When Peter makes a press statement you can often infer the opposite is true. He's always pleading poverty.

@@22grandpod Not sure that's strictly true. Peter and Katie live in one of Katie's relatives houses, so I think 2 and 2 have been added together to make 5. My father had a couple of houses but he hasn't got "serious money". I suppose it's all relative.
