"Those folks over on Olympia across the river have been really grinding my gears lately, so I wanted missiles to be pointed at them too..." Just got me laughing... hard! That line made my day.
second that comment- love Ryan's commentaries
Well, the Cuban Missile Crisis did start in October. . . .
Temper, temper Black Dragon.
Olympia: Unexpectedly blows up, New Jersey has empty Harpoon canister on deck.
The news: Spain did it!
To be fair, all Ryan has to do is just walk over and kick the Olympia a couple of times to do a similar about of damage
Yay, the radar is back and will be turning again soon! Both the ship and myself say THANK YOU!
That time lapse footage of the installation is way cool!
Some body made a really great pot of coffee today !
It was also kind of amusing seeing the boats zooming by in the background at the end.
Had the Greyhounds barking like crazy at it for some reason. Even had the sound muted! Weird Great Video overall!
Ryan- thank you so very much for your dedication and enthusiasm you show towards your job. By doing what you do- Battleship New Jersey will be in great shape when my sons are my age! Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
Ryan, It must feel very rewarding to be able to not only properly maintain the battleship but to also make it better than you found it.
Thanks Libby for including the time lapse at the end. Very nice.
The timelapse was awesome, but I'd also like to call out what a lovely angle you found to do the main video from. We don't often get to see her from enough distance to really appreciate her grandeur, it was a lovely change.
If anyone tries to mess around, Big J is ready to throw down!
Congrats on the new tubes! I'm so happy for you & your team ❤
@BattleshipNewJersey The only way you could make the Harpoon display better is if you had a mock-up Harpoon missile sticking halfway out one of the canisters like it's being launched! But then you have to find a way to make that display weatherproof, and that might be an even bigger hassle!
We've got a tomahawk displayed that way
@@BattleshipNewJersey That is very cool! That is what is targeting the USS Cod!!!! I knew there had to be a reason for your grudge with the USS Olympia! Now Paul can worry!
What else do you need? - a crew! I visited the mayflower once, and they had re enactors in costume to explain the hardship of the trip to visitors. If you had mock sailors doing the same it would bring the ship to life
Nice. I enjoy footage of the work in progress. Especially with clouds and boats dancing around in the background.
What a joy see her restored, we use to tie up close to the BB's when homeported in Philly. They dwarfed the Frigate I was on. Looking forward to playing Seapower and I hope the New Jersey is in the game.
Marines. you need Marines on the ship. Semper Fi!
Operation Hilton Part 2????
If they have a local Marine ROTC program they could run the guns for a saluting firing on a few special weekends not unlike the Time Keeper role of the USS Constitution.
bet that rigging crew felt pretty good putting those up, they are used to steel buildings every day. very cool
Most of the crew emplacing the Harpoons are the ship's paid maintenance employees (great bunch of guys BTW). The gent in the orange shirt handling the chainfall rigging is an employee of the crane company.
What else do you need to restore to interpret the ship well everything!!
But Ryan you and your group of employees and volunteer's are doing a fantastic job with the money and resources available to you.
Great job Ryan & crew, the ship keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to come see her again!
Hmmm... are we sure that the dry dock wasn't to get her ready to go back to sea? 😜
Would this be the same hardware Drachinifel thought the US Navy might be interested in having it returned ? I believe Libby seemed disheartened about that possibility as BB 62 was heading toward dry dock earlier this year.
You fight with the military you have, and the American one is so depleted their recommissioning naval fossils.
Let's hope not. She's earned retirement and besides if BB62 were to sail again, we are likely in some deep crap.
@@kman-mi7su Considering the PLAN build-up over the past few years, we would definitely be in some deep crap if the new cold war went hot.
Now, if we could only get the weapons lockers restocked!!!😂
With Ryan's great sense of humor I can see him sending a message over to the USS Olympia that would read: By the time you get this look across the river, "Incoming". The NJ is looking better every day.
Really enjoyed the additional time lapse at the end.
Y'all have done a FANTASTIC job!!
Feels good when a plan comes together!
Outstanding progress!
Keep up the battle!
I hope you folks have more car shows surrounding the mighty battleship! I was not able to make it to your last 1 a few years ago but I loved the premise… for a few extra $ donation, you got a premium spot near the ship. Pictures with your show car and the BB, food trucks and tours…
She's a beaut, Clark! ❤
She's getting ready to meet the threats.
@@BB12659 : China is probably like🫣👀👀👀
lol, ryan happier than a clam with this new equipment! 🤣👍
It costs money to dispose of a harpoon canister. Only the govt. lol. Im sure half the people here would have paid the Navy 💵 to take them off their hands. Glad you got them. Would be good to get both antennas rotating. I wish Wisconsin would get some parts back also
Ryan - whatcha doing with the shipping crates? Perhaps some more pierside seating? Or use 4 of them as uprights for a shade sail?
Stick some electric wheels on one and call it the Captains landside runabout.
There is a problem…Watching those workers move that fast at the end…their bosses will expect it all the time now 😮😂😝
Harpoons look great!
Absolutely great job team !!
She is looking great. Wonderful job.
Getting ready for some action I'm thinking. 🤔🤔
You definitely need power running to your radar(s) and bombard the whole sweep area in high-intensity radio energy. I'm sure local stations and your power bill and the local airport(s) would love that ; )
Things that can be added back to the ship?
Well I remember you showing us the Nixie room which was completely stripped, that would be pretty cool.
Also remember you saying that you're missing the CIWS controllers, or at least the correct ones that New Jersey would've had.
I don't know what you have left to do on the exterior with all the work that's been done. I'll just say that you guys are doing a wonderful job.
It would be awesome to have volunteers in uniform on board acting as if they were still sailors manning their posts on the tour route.
I imagine they have enough problems getting enough vollies just to do maintenance and tours.
I think you need to get the 16" guns rotating. THAT would be cool.
Iowa managed to get a 16" turret rotating but it took a herculean effort to do so, unfortunately it's just outside the Scope of what the crew on NJ can do when they have far more pressing projects like the redecking for the future
If you could get the Phalanx cannons moving like they are tracking a target, that would be cool. Or perhaps even getting the 16in. turrets to rotate? Perhaps aimed at Olympia?
Think they said the main turrets will never move again.
@@frostedbutts4340I feel like Ryan might be a bit more motivated to do it now after Iowa got one of her turrets operational haha
Such a fantastic video, seeing these components installed. They look amazing
Can't really think of too much more that can adorn the mighty lady to make her more 90's ish, she is in fine form as it is, and could only think it would be smaller items here and there about the ship that she would be short of, her silhouette certainly doesn't lack anything, and to be honest I didn't even realise she was minus the port side Harpoon's, not like it's a side of her we see all that often....guess she now has best sides all round 😂😂😂 and will forever more!!!
Cheers from Sydney Aus!!!! 🍻🍻🍻🍻
I'm placing my bets on Olympia for this showdown🤣. Also, what an awesome flex to be the most complete Iowa class BB
I served on a Knox class frigate in the mid 80s. The eight cell ASROC launcher mounted on the foredeck had the outer four cells modified to launch Harpoons.
If I were the curator of the Olympia, Id strike colors, and haul up something funny in pennant code..
Its ok - the Becuna on her starboard side has them targeted 😁
All that matters to me, is that ship is ready to fight aliens. I know in the movie, one Iowa battle ship did the trick, but reality will require all four. Hope to see those launchers when I visit, are fresh and loaded! :) Great ship and hopefully she does not have to fight anyone/aliens any more.
I understand the US Navy is displeased with Harpoon, but wow enough to just donate to a museum‽
Hey, the harpoon has LOTS of friends in Ukraine! 🇺🇦
Sounds like it was just the canisters, no way they're donating real ordnance
@@berserk-in9cl yeah
We visited last week and it was great. The only thing I noticed that was missing was a bit of red tape on the main deck - we took a little bit of hunting to pick up the line when the red route took us outside.
How about somewhere that this archive of youtube videos can be viewed on board? There's such a wealth of info that you've created which can really help explain everything.
We gotta get some turret oscillation going! I know it can be done
@BattleshipNewJersey Hey Ryan. I love seeing all the new parts your putting on her. really brings her back. I was thinking you should try and obtain some chaff cannisters to put in the countermeasure tubes.
Re: getting the radar dishes rotating and it being winter etc.
“Don’t tell me about your little problems mister I’m only interested in results.”
General Hawkes in the movie Strategic Air Command.
But seriously it might also be cool to have one of the drones and the associated launch and retrieval gear.
Cool!!! I like more realistic museums!
Grind no more, lol. Thanks for a informative video and thanks for all your hard work that you put into New Jersey and your channel.
Looking Good
Great video, your skills are getting scary-good ;)
Epic upgrade!
Going up the masts means things are looking up 😂😜🤔
As a foul green skin might enthusiastically shout: “MOOOOOAR DAKA!”
IMHO The reason to bring one (or more) of these ships back in service is not primarily the physical firepower it has to offer, it would instead be the astounding amount of pride and excitement this would evoke within the citizens of our country.
Bring back the big guns.
Nah, the citizens of our country would just be even more pissed that the government is spending more money on the military and not the things that more directly affect them on a daily basis.
Welcome to the thunder dome!
Idea for some funding support for keeping those Radars going and advertising. Reach out to the local TV stations to plug it into their weather network system and perhaps add a camera to USS NJ's Mast. Might be able to have them cover the cost to operate them with a line splitter for the feeds to a closet or small room. Also with the view from the mast would be good report on the river traffic and weather for the station. For special days a local News crew could be given access for features. I'm sure that nearby airport feeds into the National weather systems too so range might be limited but would offer local refinement but Battleships did operate weather monitor equipment for the fleets they were with and weather monitoring stations are often installed near river banks. Such a system would still be accurate and useful to operate at cost as an extra data point in models.
If they got guys that can build monster trucks. They can sure get those turrets moving!
I am so glad those aren’t “live rounds!
Ryan, I guess the USS Cod is just a bit out of Harpoon range! Paul can rest easy tonight!
FIRE IT UP!
Do you have an armory for small arms such as pistols and rifles that a SEAL team or onboard sailors would store their weapons and gear? I’d love to see it.
8 Harpoons seems excessive just to take on the Olympia; what will you do with the remaining 7?
Camden and philly police departments could use them for riot control!!!
Are you going to keep one of those Harpoon shipping containers (with the lid) for display? They look pretty cool
So you guys got a dummy RGM-84 Harpoon missiles ?
Harpoon Canisters, not the actual missiles, of course.
Yea , that would be a good thing to display just like USS Littlerock has her TALOS missiles an the rails and in the missile house for display.
are we sure they are empty missile cans.........and the radar is being re-installed......and we are in the middle of a few conflicts......could be a self- defense measure for the local area............
Hopefully. Otherwise Olympia's in trouble!
@@MK0272 yea
Hopefully the Navy realized what a fantastic recruiting tool she is. And with the recruitment challenges they need it.
The next project should obviously be to get the main turrets able to rotate and the guns able to elevate and fire again. :P
You could get revenue for the museum by contracting to do demolition jobs around the Philadelphia and Camden area and selling tickets for people to watch. :)
"Need an island sunk? New Jersey's your gal."
I could just imagine a building on the waterfront that is to be demolished by explosives. To start the show, the USS New Jersey was to fire a blank salvo from one of the turrets.
BOOM!
Explosives fire!
Building falls down!
100,000,000 You Tube Hits!
@@klsc8510 Eh, blanks aren't as much fun. Use HE rounds. :)
@@vbscript2 You can lift it into the turret and onto the tray then!
In 50 years, when the ship goes to dry dock again, will these high things need to be "cut" off, or did you leave easier disconnects this time?
The mast will be cut off again, its just so much more secure in the event of a hurricane or whatever to weld them. The other items have only ever been bolted
Must have been just as hard to reload those as it is to reload am VLS
if you cut one missile tube in half and put the old missile inside and then the guests can see the missile themselves
Wow , your lads are quick and no tea breaks .I was wondering if you still have the control units ?
Need a pioneer and some mascot cats.
drone dome, two drones enter, one drone leaves!
Should keep a set of those shipping containers on display and for future repair work like sending to the paint shop.
They are not big enough to do work in
Have you checked INSIDE those canisters? Strange things can happen with military bureaucracy. Wouldn’t want a RAF Scampton Grand Slam situation cropping up!
At 1:57 did he say the SPQ-9 was for drone control?
The SPQ-9 is a radar and is part of the MK86 gun control systems that was also on the Spruance and other clasees.
I guess it could have been used for other things as well but I do not think it was used to control drones.
We used it as a second navigation radar.
It thought the drone was the Pioneer and it used a UHF datalink for control but that is from memory.
Thanks for the great video.
Get more variety in the store. Better shot glasses and good quality stickers. I collect both and put the stickers on our RV which provides some free PR.
Given everytjing going on in the world, see if the Navy would be good with bringing the steam plant back online.
Easy answer: Operational 16" guns!! Olympia folks will be extra nice after that.
very cool stuff ya'll! Keep it up :)
The radar dome was installed prior us going on our last West Pac in 89
so, what did they do with the harpoon missiles' shipping containers? seems like they're a pretty cool historical object in and of themselves.
Idea for a show, which hits harder with the most damage, 16" gun, harpoon or tomahawk?
Man i really wanted to visit and take a tour but found out you are closed for the fun new toys install😢, from the west coast and leave the day you open back up.
Are you leaving the acetylene and oxygen tanks up there, like the last time the radar and antennas were reinstalled? I found that amusing….
Those harpoon canisters looked like they were two curators in length. Is that about right? The time lapse was terrific. Thanks for posting.
Closer to 3
How about "programing" the Phalanx CIWS to have the base traverse, and raise and lower the cannon at intervals? That would be wicked cool!! (Did anyone check to make sure the Harpoon launchers were empty? Asking for a friend...)
I am wondering if any or all the workers were experienced with originally installing /maintaining the Harpoon missles/systems?
Nope
As far as i can tell the harpoon can be set up to fly a pre-programmed trajectory so you could have sent one in a u turn towards the Olympia :)
She floats, she can move, she can lob missiles and eat quite a few in return. If the new cold war ever turns hot, you might find some new government-issued crewmen on your ship one-day! 😅 When push comes to shove, it will be AMAZING how fast 65,000 tons of floating firepower can become relevant again, no matter how old.
No trained crew
@@SkidderoperatorI was thinking more of a floating missile platform that could be towed a few miles offshore. Give her harpoons, radar, maybe some drone or anti-drone capabilities. There’d be no expectation of survival for a skeleton crew, but she could sink a few invading ships.
Doesn't Iowa have Tomahawk cruise missile launchers?
How about having someone walk around the tour route with a label maker labelling fittings, brackets, and such with what would have gone there?
An idea for the Harpoon crates that you have left over. Put them in a display area, and make a table surface to go on top of them. Basically make them the base for a display table that you can put other stuff on. Keep another piece of history, and still have it be useful. Keep up the great vids!
They wouldn't fit inside the ship and we don't have landside space for exhibits
Obviously, rotate a turret like Iowa.
Hopefully, the whole upper section of the ship is repainted too
You need a helicopter to park on the fantail.
We have one
