    I started using YNAB in Oct 21 and being a type A personality tried to account for EVERYTHING so that I became overwhelmed and once the extra spending of Xmas began I just gave it all up and stopped tracking completely. Now come Feb 22, I have plucked up the courage to start again and with a new budget and watching your videos and following your check lists I feel back in control that I can do this. Hearing you say -'keep it simple till you get more familiar with the software' has stopped me overthinking and feeling like it's all too hard.Thanks Nick, your videos are so clear and cover many of my questions.😊

    Nick, I cannot thank you enough for this video. I am a financial coach who has consistently channeled my clients toward a different budgeting tool. Last week one of my new clients insisted on using YNAB. Ugh! I have looked at YNAB for days trying to figure it out and got nothing but stress over it all because I found it cumbersome and not at all easy to understand. I found your video today and you make YNAB clear and understandable for me. Thank you! I feel like I can at least have a semi-knowledgable conversation with my client this week because of this video. Definitely will be checking out your other YNAB videos.

    Great video! Thank you for taking the time to put it together. Even as an experienced YNABer I was sitting here with my budget open implementing some of your tips. I loved your explanation of how YNAB handles credit card transactions, very well presented.
    One reason I prefer to keep a savings account is to maintain a level of fraud protection. The majority of our annual insurance premiums (home, car, & life) occur in December/January right along with spending for Christmas and school tuition for the spring semester. Having these funds build up in checking bares some level of risk (albeit fairly low), so I've opted to keep excess funds in a separate savings account.
    Keep up the great work!

    I’ve been looking for a “good” budgeting system for years. I tried Every Dollar, hated it, was turned to Mint, absolutely hate it lol. When I stared with Mint years ago I didn’t have the money to pay for a budgeting app, plus it didn’t make sense “to me” to pay for something unnecessary when trying to save money lol. But now I’m thinking of this as an investment 🤔 I can stupidly be paycheck to paycheck but I don’t want that anymore. I want to know exactly where I’m at at all times. Once I saw the YNAB community I was sold on this app. This is the first video I came across, I’ll use this to set up everything lol. I’m thinking I’ll wait a bit longer and check some other videos before I actually start my trial. Thank you so much for creating these videos 🥳

    I plan to add my HYSA which receives the majority of my paycheck. If I heard correctly, adding it as an on-budget account will add its total to my budget which I can just distribute to the "HYSA contributions" category group. Love this video, thank you. I was overwhelmed because I am living paycheck to paycheck with family. So I needed to see where eery dollar is going. This was not at all hard to do. I have over $4,000 in credit card debt + loans. But I feel clarity now then I did before. I feel empowered and like I can turn things around for myself.

    Thank you so much for this informative video. I am about two years from retiring and really wanted to get a handle on eliminating my (dumb) debt and your tutorial was excellent in giving me a great restart to using YNAB to its fullest. I have tried many times using YNAB, fell away, and came back to it again. Your walk-through is the foundation I needed to see. I watched this at least twice before beginning my restart. Peace.

    The tidbit about comparing the underfunded number with your income is gold. It's easy to get carried away when creating targets, to the point where it's unrealistic!

      Thanks! So glad it helped even as a long-time YNAB user. As for updating, At this moment I'm not planning to do updates to videos that are more-or-less the same, but I will likely update the ones where I feel there's a big enough difference in how I teach it now that it warrants a change.
      Example: I'm releasing a new video about YNAB and savings accounts this week :)

    I am brand new to YNAB… basically new to budgeting in general. So I’m sorry if this question seems dumb or obvious, but I just want to make sure I’m setting the correct target for each budget…
    So for monthly bills that are the exact same every month (mortgage, auto loan, internet, etc.) you should use Needed To Spend?
    For monthly expenses that vary some (groceries, gas, electric) you should used Monthly Savings Builder? And if your expense for that month was under the budget then the remaining balance will transfer to next month? Or should these categories also have the Needed To Spend target?

    • @mappedoutmoney
      @mappedoutmoney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jill, so anything that has a due date (mortgages, internet, etc...) should all be needed for spending.
      For monthly expenses that you don't need to build up extra overtime also use needed for spending.
      For things that vary a lot (auto maintenance, pet expenses, clothing, etc...) use monthly savings builder.
      Here's a video that goes deep on this topic: th-cam.com/video/10dpheXAJ4Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ox-8S5MLVcf_Cv_H

    I am one of those learners that needs to learn in a step by step approach. I started last year and gave up because I just couldn’t grasp the concept for some reason. I am currently going through cancer treatments and the fear of the cost, travel, tons of copays, and possible loss of time at work while living pay to pay scares me more than the cancer. I knew I needed to get myself on a budget breaking the living paycheck to paycheck cycle. I am SO happy I found you. I am signed up w YNAB but need to watch any and all videos that will help me fully understand the “concept “ if that makes sense. I’m sticking to it this time thanks to your videos.

    Wow, that was an hour long? Maybe I just love budgets (nope) but that flew by and was really high yield. I have been doing a really thorough budget for about 10 years now. I have several spreadsheets, do zero balance budgeting, and really work to spend within what I make and prepare for the future. It takes me a TON of time. I was looking for a new way to do it and was having a hard time figuring out what could be an all in one solution that gets rid of my multiple tools and just lets me look at my account and one tracker. This video actually showed how to use this program and allow me to do just that. Need to change my approach a bit (spending what I have instead of budgeting what's coming, but this makes a lot of sense with how you demonstrated it), but you really covered it all enough to know I can do it (maybe after some trial/error and a few more videos). You should be paid by YNAB to do this.. :)

    I actually use a lot of the savings balance target type but without a date. This allows me to have a target amount, but I contribute whatever I can, whenever I can. Doesn’t count for my underfunded number either

    • @mappedoutmoney
      @mappedoutmoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally get that. I typically don't tell beginners to do that, because when first learning about the underfunded number and target types, it can be confusing trying to remember what does and doesn't add to that underfunded number. So I'll often not have a target for those items, put the total desired amount in the name, and only add a target when I am actively starting to save for them.
      But, ultimately it's all personal, so if you like having the savings balance targets, then I think that's great!
