Great video with time stamps. Thank you.
I used to drive that section of I-40 all of the time back in the 90s when commuting frequently between Little Rock AR and Raleigh NC. Always wondered why the sleepy little Pigeon River was so small, but yet the cut out along the hill side was so deep and wide. **NOW WE KNOW**
What is along I-40 is the natural river bed. What's you usually see is a tiny trickle because the majority of river flow is going through the mountain in a tunnel into the power generator building. So what you see here is an overflow of course...to clarify..the part of I-40 from exit 15 west is Waterville lake. When you can see the river again around 8 mile marker it is below the dam.
@@ribirchfield9496 thank you for explaining, when my daughter was small we vacationed up there often and I did wonder, sorry for so much destruction,,still praying for everyone,
Wow. The lives and the hopes and dreams that the river carried away will be etched in history forever. The landscape has changed forever
Awesome
And new people will move in in a year from now and brand new lives and dreams will begin. Funny how that works.
Nature has been changing the landscape as long as there has been nature. The power of nature is impressive.
@@skygazer858 The mountains will eventually come down.
@@garyb6219 They certainly will. I believe that the Appalachians were taller than the Rockies once upon a time.
Know exactly where this area is washed out on I-40…Can’t even fathom what some of those in their vehicles or otherwise, simply washed away by these NC river torrents during Helene must’ve gone through in their last minutes…
My 🙏’s go out to their families. 🥺
its washed out like this in about 8 different spots
It’s terrifying and unbelievable how much damage flood water can do. It’s why pretty much all the rivers and streams here in southern California are channelized and completely encased in concrete. They’re dry probably 90+% of the time but the floods can be enormous when there is a big rain storm.
1:00 In this pan shot you can see and hear how powerful this river got. Nice shot.
We moved from Phoenix to NC in 2003 and from that time till now I’ve drive. I-40 back and forth by myself quite a few times! We will be taking a different route to Colorado for Christmas this year!!
and , where is the media now? People are still suffering!
The public has the attention span of a gold fish, thanks to the Big media outlets.
They have either scampered off to other bleeding events or are in their safe spaces getting over the election. No matter where the media are, they are not a value add to any community.
@@digger105337well yes, we do have an attention disorder in America.
Narrative not convenient to current regime
That is some serious Class VI rapids!
My wife and I canoed that with a picnic lunch and sipping champagne along the way...
For those unfamiliar with this place, it is treacherous in the best of times. For an interstate, it is narrow and curvy.
Most of the bodies of water in WNC called rivers, are little more than shallow streams, just to give perspective about how high and wide the water got.
Lol come to the desert state of Utah, and see what we call a river. It’s all relative 😊
@@unclelurk1556I used to live in phoenix - we had rivers that had no water in them for years! But when a monsoon came along - ……….!
Yet the trees on the banks are still standing. Pretty amazing!
Remember the Grand Canyon was carved very recently very quickly by Colorado River in geological time.
Are these photographers sure they want to be standing where they are?
What is the timeline to rebuild the road? edit: New Year's Day.
Gabions would be the quickest way to shore up the washout and make permanent repairs. 1:19
*dirt crumbles away*
*steps closer*
*more dirt crumbles away*
*zooms in*
What is that like class 7 rapids?
lol, I was thinking about that, see a couple guys kayaking that water.
My Call of Duty handle is now Raging Pigeon
WOW!
Don’t put highways next to rivers
Rivers always represent the shallowest grade through a region.
The river was washing away along that valley years and years (centuries) before that silly road was constructed. Will the river continue to behave like that?
Poor mountain areas of NC & TN
This area is very diverse as far as income. Some of the mountain homes were beautiful and expensive but next door you can have a broken down trailer. Every home is/was different. Some of the tiny homes were so charming and kept with pride showing arts and craft works like hand painted bird houses and flower fountains and hand carved welcome signs. Most folks up here in the mountains are just the best around. IMHO.
Where does all that water eventually end up?
river to river to river to ocean
I have a water feature in my back yard
water finds the weak spot and then keeps gnawing at it.
HOLY FLOOD ZONE BATMAN !
Ya i mean, why truck in huge boulders in a side dump semi trailer and stop it, when you can just stare at it and watch it destroy whole lanes. Why no one uses their brain for public roads, utilities ect is ridiculous. Private business would, private residents would, anyone that cared about their local road in a local town would.
Why not go out there with your civil engineering degree and fix it yourself?
@_LuxStein you don't need a degree to solve a problem, you just think that because you've been brainwashed. Need to be a mechanic to change oil too you think don't ya? Lol Sheeple.
Imagine raxting down there
Water aways takes the way of less resistance. Same as when people build roads and train tracks.. That section must of gave TDOT ,NTOT trouble before, see the concerte wall. The natural curve of the waterway. Like a soeeding car the water was so fast and much it couldn't take the curve....😢
God knows who did this. Always remember that
Yep. Called Helene.
Please post the long run version. the edited version is too short. .
Earth bats last.
Hey I got a great place to build a road and it’s right next to flowing water what could go wrong
In steep, mountainous terrain, where else do you propose to build a road? Think hard, and let us know your solution.
@ not beside flowing water
@ dynamite makes small rocks out of big rocks every time and if there was a mineral that America wanted there would not be a mountain there anymore
@@Gemni65 So the tens of thousands of miles of highway in this country that is built along flowing rivers should be rebuilt in case a flood of biblical magnitude might come along and take out a few miles every few hundred years. OK.
@ not a thing biblical about a hurricane that’s Mother Nature
Ukraine thanks you for your tax dollars!
Click bait.
I’ve seen rivers this close to roads in upstate New York and they do not wash away. Unfortunately Red States do not invest in their infrastructure but if this river were gay than Tennessee would be all over it.
you're working too hard🤣🤣
In every state I’ve traveled, rivers identify as wet.
Oregon is just as blue as NY and we have rivers take out roads all the time.
Video title suggests real time. Click bait.
Why do you build roadways next to Rivers riddle me that Batman
What are ya 4? Do you even know what a farm is? All paths start along side the river....
Ask the natives of that country
1) Rivers have cut their way through hills for billions of years creating landscapes we see today. 2) Therefore it is logical (to say nothing of time and money considerations ) to follow the flat river with road and rail. 3) This is standard practice for the entire world. 4) VERY occasionally a storm will dump a huge amount of water into an area with the result that we see here. 5) In due course the banking will be rebuilt, back filled and once more the road become useable for many more years to come. Simples.
Why do you make such silly remarks when you don’t even know the area!!! This isn’t like the roads in eastern Carolina (beach) that wash away with almost every hurricane!
Vow...is this California
Western North Carolina

Could be just about any mountainous place. Just add historic rainfall.
There are floods happening all over the planet and they will continue to do so Raymond Paul Sullivan III me myself and I and him RPS 111 time to move on

Your state gets what it gets for voting Trump..
So by voting for Trump they will get actual federal aid for this event.
@robertslugg8361 lol.. just wait...
You can thank duke Energy for the Mess
?
wtf ? A hurricane with rain and wind caused the mess. Duke Energy comes in after every storm and repairs the mess. I'm always thankful for Duke - after every storm they are on top of it.
Don’t worry Kamala getting you all 750 dollars 😂😂😂😂
Glad they took those dams away!
Let’s go kayakers!!!
And then the Democrats ignored republicans emergency needs
I remember when Trump tossed out paper towels to hurricane victims. Desperate humans. That was awesome, too. Anyhoo, I’m not aware of any federally declared disaster where the federal government didn’t attempt to help out, regardless of a state’s political affiliation. Of course, because it’s a disaster and federal money is not unlimited, that help is never enough. It’s just easier to blame people we have been taught to hate. Well done 👍
