Master and Commander is arguably one of the best, most historically accurate war movies ever. Though it is fiction and based on a series of novels, its attention to detail and respect for the Royal Navy in the age of Nelson really just freaking rules. If you havent watched it, do yourself a favor and please do

A few hours late commenting on this video but I have to jump in and say that I straight CRIED REAL TEARS when I saw that Bob Hope memorial... It is so touching to see him entertaining generations of troops of all ages and races and genders and branches, able bodied and wounded, seeing their smiling faces and hearing their laughter for all time... What a fitting tribute to someone who really gave so much to people who deserve MUCH better than our government gives them... Thank you Jacob for sharing this wonderful monument with us... Finding out about unexpected things like this is one of the things I love best about your channel...

The best place to go whale watching is in Monterey California. I've gone whale watching there with some marine biology friends and the blue whales are so beautiful to see. Especially in a small research vessel since it really helps you to appreciate how massive they are. But you go during the right time of year and there's tons of whales. I've even seen Humpback Whales feeding.

I learned all those knots in Boy Scouts. For some reason the sheet bend is harder to remember.

Best way to remember the deference between the starboard and port side of a ship or boat. Port has 4 letters just like the word left. Port is the left side. Starboard is right. Helps me remember at least.

San Diego was my home most of the 90s as my partner was finishing his 20 year Navy career. Beautiful city with lots to do and see. The original Museum of Death was in downtown San Diego at that time, in a basement space that used to be a mortuary (it was moved to Los Angeles in 1999). Great video Jacob!

We would like to suggest a fun day in downtown LA; visit the fantastic "BROAD" Art Museum, then ride the historic "ANGELS FLIGHT" tramway down Bunker Hill, then have a bite to eat at the Grand Central Market. All of these attractions are in close proximity. Your narration at the Forest Lawn Museum was great and we think you'd do a wonderful job with your take on art museums. Thanks for what you do!

The AGSS-555 Dolphin was one one of many subs my Dad helped build in his 35 years at the Portsmouth Navel Shipyard. I'm fortunate enough to have documentation of dozens of subs my dad worked on in his career. Including the Dolphin. Thanks for sharing while you walk in his footsteps as well as others that built and served on it.

I know I am coming in late but from a San Diego resident, here are some weatherproof ideas:
    1. Balboa Park for the Comic-Con Museum, the San Diego Air and Space Museum and the nearby (2 minute walk) Flee Science Center (they have a great IMAX dome, one of the biggest in the US - perfect for a rainy day)
    2. Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute (at UCSD in La Jolla) - amazing aquarium
    3. Geisel Library at UCSD (has Dr. Seuss' archives and exhibits)
    4. The shops of the Convoy District - not a mall, just an area with cool shops (some really great pop culture stores and amazing Asian cuisine)
    Seasonal Exhibits:
    1. National Geographic's Beyond King Tut exhibit at the Del Mar Fairgrounds
    2. Jurassic World: The Exhibition in Mission Valley
    Food:
    1. Kansas City BBQ (down in the Marina where you were in this vlog) - where they filmed Top Gun bar scenes
    2. Liberty Public Market in Liberty Square (tons of great local vendors and food)
    3. The oldest still functioning Jack In The Box (San Diego's hometown fast food) 4104 Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach (the first was on 63rd and El Cajon is long gone)
    4. Tacos El Gordo - Super popular taco chain in San Diego and Vegas only
    5. Hodad's in Pacific Beach (legendary local burgers)
    6. High Pies in Oceaside (the repurposed house from the original Top Gun) - a bit of a drive but a great photo op
I could go on and on. I love this city!

At 4:55-5:09 the U.S.S. San Diego (LPD-22) is a San Antonio-class amphibious landing platform dock (LPD) that is not simply an aircraft carrier (it has no aircraft wings like a full aircraft carrier), rather it transports numerous types of craft, both sea, air, and land used in an expeditionary force, which in turn carry troops to land.
U.S.S. Langley (CV-1/AV-3), is the first proper aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy. It started out life as a collier named Jupiter in 1912, but was converted a 8 years later into Langley, and provided valuable experience in naval aviation warfare operations that informed the importance of this new way of fighting and helped in having other vessels converted after the Washington Treaty from heavy cruisers and battleships into carriers.

And back when I was young I actually took a trip with my class where we spend the night on the Star of India and that was right before my mom met my stepdad and we moved downtown

Super super late but Jacob, if you're staying in San Diego for a few days, I might as well throw my hat in the ring here: go and eat at the Old Town Mexican Cafe. It's right across from the Whaley House (also interesting, but if you've been there before there's nothing new lol), and it has the most delicious homemade tortillas you'll ever have. If you and Jen are into ribs I can't recommend theirs enough. The whole old town area is adorable, but maybe not best to visit in a storm. I have a relative buried at Point Loma, and my family will visit every so often. We go way out of our way to include the Cafe in our trip though, every time! We always take as many as they'll give us to go, too!

Wow- loved the ship museum in San Diego! We have a museum in San Francisco that has a ferry just like the one here (that was used on the SF bay before the bridges were built), but it only has one sailing ship accompanying it. Many more boats in San Diego. We'll have to visit next time we take a trip down there. Thanks! 😀

The museums at Balboa Park are great. Don't know if the carousel and train are running(probably not because of rain). The zoo would be a must if not raining.

I recommend checking out Ocean Beach! It's about a ten minute drive from where you filmed this video. It's a very unique little Beach community... there's really no other place like it! If you and Jen want to stop for a drink, check out Pacific Shores Cocktail Longue on Newport. It was built in remembrance of Pearl Harbor and it has a vintage, aquatic theme to it. It's over 80 years old. My bf works there...both of us really enjoy you and Jen's videos btw!... ☺️

Thanks for the memories. We use to go there once a year to view those vessels and bore our kids. A friend of mine actually sailed on the one ship for the filming of the Pirates of the Caribbean. You need to check out the "San Diego Model Railroad Museum" in Balboa Park. It is really cool. Probably not as cool as that minature Canada place you found, but it is still pretty cool. I am guessing the Bob Hope tribute went in after we left LA in 2005. We never saw it.

Great video. Always wanted to go there for the HMS Surprise to start. It’s not a side wheeler, but The Berkeley reminds me of the General Slocum, the 1904 worst maritime disaster prior to the Titanic. Search for Mike Rowe Dirty Jobs, they did 2 segments on each of the Medea and the Star of India. Maggot biscuits, take the lesser of two weevils! That aircraft carrier is the USS Abraham Lincoln, an active part of the Pacific fleet. It's pronounced Shawnessee. You should go to the Submariners Museum in Groton, Conn and go to Mystic Seaport. Next time in NC at Judaculla Rock, I’ll now be sure to stay away from the Hiawassee! Jacob, you tie knots like Hooper in Jaws. Thanks, great video

You need to come to Muskogee Oklahoma and visit the USS Batfish. It is the most decorated submarine during WWII.

Carpetbagger is in San Diego? It'd be cool to run across him at a local museum.
Btw you can get 1/2 off at most SD museums this month by visiting a Macy's and getting a free museum pass.

You should check out the titanic museum next time you are in Vegas. There is a small piece (the staircase replica) you can't film but the rest you can. And also see the near by aquarium.
