On the warranty side of things, wanted to share my experience.
I bought a Sola 1200 S/F middle of last year. Worked great until the light died on the charger, refused to turn on with anything more than an incredibly dim light. My LDS replaced the light with one off the shelf -- which did exactly the same thing! Confused, because it was a bizarre issue, my LDS shipped both lights back to Sola.
Took a few weeks, but Sola worked out that the problem was related to a batch of bad firmware, and eventually comped me a Sola 2500 S/F -- a $300 CAD upgrade! -- to say sorry for the delay. That light has been working perfectly for 50 dives now.

Good info on the Sola 2000. I have a pair of Sola 2500 that I use on a tray with my GoPro. Love them. Appreciate the reminder on keeping the connections clean too. Looked like video of the crane arm on the Spiegel? Nice to see footage of you diving!! Hope you are back at it soon.

I have this light and love it! While not specific to this light only, another plus is that it frees up both hands. Important as a tech diver and instructor.

Great review James. I liked the sola lights when diving in good visibility warm water.
Wish they had a solid Goodman handle option included with them. The straps are miserable to adjust with thick gloves.

I have the L&M Sola 2500 Spot/Flood. I have over 50 dives on this light and almost all of them are night dives. My experience is the same as James. Battery recharge time and burn times are great. Switch broke after one dive and customer service eventually agreed to replace the entire light... but... it took some convincing on my part. The CS person I worked with really didn't know the product line that well. She definitely didn't know how to take me through the steps of testing the light to ensure it was actually broken and not "operator error". In the end, it worked out and the replacement light has worked fine. As James said, clean the terminals with white vinegar and be very vigilant to keep dirt or sand out of that sliding magnetic switch... it jams easily.

I have a Sola 1200 and a Gobe 1000, both with the soft Goodman handle. I wear either my Bare 5mm or my dry gloves. With the dry gloves, the length of the strap on the handles, I improved, by running a zip tie through the fold over of fabric at the end of the strap. Will stop it from going through the buckle, and also makes it easier to pull the straps tight with dry gloves on; I just make a small loop out of the zip tie. One more inch of length to the strap would also fix the problem. I also pack a Gobe 500 as my spare white light as I switch between a Nightsea lens and a red spot at night on my Gobe 1000.

Just got back from a long weekend trip to Florida got to dive Blue Heron Bridge a couple of times and a charter off of Boynton Beach. I have a 1500 lmn photo video light. it's an off brand but works well it uses a 26650 battery and usually gives me at least two hours on high but with the two hour dives in the shallows of BHB I'm thinking I need to upgrade. I am trying out the underwater photo thing and looking for a brighter light I need to overpower the sunlight to get better color in the photos with my cheap camera setup. I really would prefer to be able to swap batteries between dives rather than have to recharge through a port.

Cool light. I'm a retired search and recovery diver. Wish that light was out when I was active.
Now I free dive and scuba dive just for pleasure and to stay in shape. What's a good light? As mine are getting old and bulky from my search and recovery days.

  • @bullsharkreef

Nice light and review, but I went with BigBlue primarily because I wanted to be able to change the battery between dives. Also, I feel like the all metal construction, including switch, could be tougher than plastic(but I admit it's a feeling, haven't done any testing so I could be totally wrong on that).

Great Review, bit of a side question. And if you already have a video on this I apologize. Are there light's that I can attach to my kit that are purely for location identification while under water. What I mean is say I'm under the water and visibility is very poor, I've often thought that some sort of light, or potentially strobe would be beneficial to just give that extra bit of range to locate your buddy. Appreciate any info, -Cheers

    • @DiversReady

There are lots of reputable dive manufacturers out there, making high quality lights for divers. Light & Motion are a lighting specialist. They started making studio lights for photographers, before branching into sports lights (cycling and diving.) They have a lot more proprietary technology in the lighting industry.

I wasn't sure about Sola being sans tethered battery until Jill Hienreith endorsed it. I'm not a fanboy but I'm never going to do all the crazy stuff she does. I'm sure it's not her primary light but her backup gear is probably better than my best gear. I was not disappointed with the 2500.

I have and still like my Sola Spot/Flood 2500....BUT after getting my girl a VERY BRIGHT bigblue VTL2600p, I won't buy anything but bigblue!
It is better than sola in my mind because:
    1. Battery is a standard 32650 - Sola's is proprietary, have to send it in to be replaced.
    2. The switch is protected from salt water -whereas the Sola's switch has to be replaced every few years and
    3. It was $100 cheaper!
It also comes with the goodman-style holder.

The issue I have with BB is that 1) they typically don't ever produce the lumens advertised but more importantly 2) lumen output drops off soon after it is turned on. Look at some of these test results... particularly the charts showing lumen output over time. I don't think your specific light has been tested but look at the results for other BB dive lights. wetestlights.com/result.php?query=big+blue

I am also torn between bigblue and sola…I have a tec 600 sola light and like the size but it is very under powered. Bigblue offers way more light output and battery time than sola for less money. However I see the sola 2000 is on sale right now and makes me thing sola again vs big blu tlv3800p

    • @jeffworst9939
      @jeffworst9939 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Monarch15w You are correct. L&M started this site because manufacturers were misrepresenting the output of their lights, particularly BB. It would definitely be better for the tests to be done by an independent lab, but I don't know of anyplace else doing this type of testing. To the best of my knowledge, BB nor anyone else has complained that these tests are not valid.

It's expensive though. In most specs it's similar to the Apeks Luna. 2000 Lumen, fabric Goodman handle, factory sealed design, charging through two pins through the body, multiple settings.
Except the Luna can go for 2 hours at max power, and it displays the remaining run time at the current power level instead of the traffic light system. Even though the Apeks Luna doesn't have the "Pro" in its name. Oh, and the Apeks Luna is cheaper by about 20%.

Far too expensive, $600 on ebay. You drop the light half way through your deco stop and it's gone. I much preferer the $20 or $50 light I buy off ebay. I drop it halfway through a deco stop, no big deal. Seen a diver drop his super expensive dive light down a wall that bottoms out at 100 metre. These lights are just not worth the out lay when they can be so easily lost. Great for shallow dives and as you say wrecks but only if you can retrieve it without putting yourself into a dangerous situation.
