Thank you for your military service... stay safe. Those things are monsters. At K-10 Hobby Shop in Maryville, IL the owner bought one to use. Even with a minimum mainline radius of 37 inches on a 60 ft x 70 ft layout, it proved an ordeal to operate it, and so now he has it for sale. There are several youtube videos of one with a load that stretches the car to about 400 ft long, which would make for six inches of overhang on the inside of a 30 inch curve. Excellent video, I'm glad I watched.

I've seen that car sitting at the Desert-Knight Yard in Oakland with a similar looking load. It is impressive and what is even more impressive is in addition to the UP crew, a trainman, an technician, and 2 armed Homeland Security agents accompanied the load to it's destination.

@APOTwixx I will put a little note on the video where you can see them and point them out to you. Re watch the video in about 2-3 minutes. The load is low but no track clearance issues as long as you screw in the load from the bottom like your supposed to. The runby didn't have the load screwed in.

Great job! On real high/wide train moves we will not pass other trains in curves, especially when you have loads that extend out like this one does. Good luck on your deployment! We appreciate your videos but your service to this country even more!

I am happy now! The sidekick came back. That's a very cool car, unfortunately I can't afford it and my old layout's been torn down, and a new one probably won't even be started for several months, so even if I could get it, I'd have nowhere to run it.

My brother worked at Westinghouse in East Pittsburgh and they made generators for power plants there, those cars were used to transport those generators and they had mechanisms to offset the load when it had to move around a curve and out away from the building, the name Schnabel is pronounced "Schnawbel" Westinghouse had their's painted in periwinkle blue. For the most part, the cars were custom made for the companies that used them such as ABB to transport transformers and Westinghouse for horizontal shaft generators. Wikipedia excerpt, The word Schnabel is from German Tragschnabelwagen, meaning "carrying-beak-wagon", because of the usually tapered shape of the lifting arms, resembling a bird's beak.
In World War II the German Wehrmacht used Schnabel cars for transporting the Karl-Gerät heavy-calibre (54 cm and 60 cm calibre) siege mortars. These were self-propelled with a continuous-track suspension chassis of substantial length to maneuver into a firing position over a short range, but depended on a pair of purpose-designed Schnabel cars for long-range transport by rail.[4] The same system was also used at the same time for the rail transport of the French FCM 2C super-heavy armored fighting vehicle.
In the United States, the first Schnabel car, WECX 200, was built for Westinghouse Nuclear by manufacturer Greenville Steel Car in the 1960s.[1] Wikipedia

I was in electrical engineering on the South Texas Nuclear Project from 1976 to 79. I was over Turbine Generator buildings 1 and 2. Each unit had two 25,00 volt to 345,000 volt, 1300 megawatt transformer that were 1.1M pounds each.
They rode less than six inches above the rails and were four feet wider than a box car.
Two engines pulled a caboose, a flat car, a transformer, another flat car another caboose, another flat car, another transformer, another flat car, another caboose, two flat cars, each carrying three the high voltage bushing that were 25 foot long.
There were six box cars with the radiators, fans, hardware, , , . They came from McGraw-Edison up on the east coast, along the east coast down into mid Florida then along the Gulf coast to a temporary rail siding about a mile from the project just south of Bay City Texas.
The conductor said they never went over 20 MPH.

This is a MASSIVE rail car - have seen it in person. SIEMENS Westing House Has these. They bring these into the plant to rebuild and re ship back to customer. The rails literally crunch as it rolls. I have pictures of the real one along with the cabooses. Will try to get a short video of it up when i get a chance

    Hello,
I am starting to build an HO layout, mostly single track but one place has a tunnel with a slight curve, about 72". Unlike most tunnels, my tunnel features enclosed wall corridor for better sound insulation. This means the side-swipe hazard exists all over the tunnel walls. So before I plan the tunnel I have a few questions:
    1) What is length and width of the Schnabel car, either in inches or, cm or mm, especially the truck-base?
    2) How heavy is it, e.g. proportionally heavier than 40' boxcars (e.g. if it is 3x longer than 40' boxcar it would be 3x heavier)
    3) If I would run this car, would the same problems with turning trucks that you mentioned arise on 36' radius curve (3/4 of prototypical European radius) that I would use on non-scenic part of the layout to turn trains 180*, the minimum radius to prevent buffer-lock on European trains where buffers provide restraint force during push-pull operations since I am using short Kadee #17 couplers?
    4) And finally prototype-related question: I am from Europe, so mostly modeling European layout with some freelancing (mixing North-American and European models on the same layout) but with close to prototypical curves and coupler lengths. I want to model an extended oval layout, where ends of it would have 36" radius turn-around curve hidden behind a backdrop, and 2 long straight segments with an aisle in the middle: rural and urban, joined by already mentioned 36" radius semicircle. On the (almost) straight sections of oval sides I have a dual track with 2 inches spacing, which would have few degrees of curve of 64" and 66" respectively (minimum prototypical European mainline curvature). I occasionally may run 89' autorack on the inner track (with wide corner overhang) and Schnabel car on outer track (with deep inner overhang), are they likely to sideswipe on prototypical large radii?

  • @1500chessie
    @1500chessie 12 ปีที่แล้ว

As you said the only problem is the overhang in curves. As i did the first run with my car it took just 1 minute till another train on the clublayout crashed in the Schnabelcar.Everyone has to beware on this behaviour of this car.

@masterownerlml There was several things that changed. In my first video (that I removed) I didn't have the screws screwed in the bottom of the load. I also didn't have the tabs shaved down to allow the car to operate like it's supposed to. So I had to redo the video to let you guys know about those problems / you the car operating the way it is supposed to operate on curves. The last video didn't show the car swinging the load because the load wasn't secured correctly. Now we're good to go!
