Claire, the reset button is only if you've changed something such as your font or the size of the captions and then want to go back to the default settings - the standard caption settings without any changes. So you can leave the reset button alone unless you're not happy with, say, the font colour you've chosen and want to start again. Thanks for your comment / question.
In fact I’ve found a statement on TH-cam that mentions they’re having problems and that they’re “working hard to resolve this” so I’m going to give it a bit of time to see if it resolves.

TH-cam advises that you can change the default size (not just for the video you’re watching) by doing this: Tap your profile picture . Tap Settings . Tap Captions. Tap “Caption size and style” to change the default size and font.
Changing your captions can be done during the editing process, and any video editor can Allie it. But these are different from the captions generated by TH-cam, which are set by the person viewing the video. @@Cartoonicus OK. You can’t move TH-cam’s captions, but that’s up to the person watching on TH-cam to adjust the size of the captions on the device they’re watching on. I wouldn’t assume they can’t see the captions as there is substantial evidence that people do watch TH-cam with the sound turned down and the captions on. I expect TH-cam places the captions where they are so as not to cover the video too much. You could certainly contact TH-cam to ask them to create an alternate option for viewers to see the captions for all TH-cam videos.
It only works on the video you're watching but view another video it does not retain caption side. The default setting on my TH-cam is 50% and I needed to change it to 75% for every video I'm watching.

How do you do this on SHORTS. I can set the captions size, color, and background fine on regular YT, but not in the shorts.
I’ve looked it up and can’t see how to do this, I’m afraid.
