    Chickens have low level light blindness. This is why they will go to roost before the sun goes down. They can’t see in low light and this makes them susceptible to predators. This is also why you’ll see them gather like this. Safety in numbers. If most of the flock is outside the coop during darkness they will most likely go where the others are. Flock animals stick together. Chickens are used to middle of the day storms which sometimes darken the day just as much as an eclipse. They most likely, like us, are able to decipher that there’s something different about the lighting and atmosphere during an eclipse and obviously unnerve them.

    I'm 71 years old and when I was around 10 I asked Uncle Bob, an old old black gentleman that did "piddling around" work on my grandad's farm, when he was born. I knew he was old because he had teenage great-grandchildren. Uncle Bob told me he didn't know when he was born. He said all he knew was that his mama told him he was born the day the chickens went to roost at noon. I assume it was during an eclipse.

    • @brodude3709
      @brodude3709 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      If you are 71 years old, 61 years ago you would be 10 in 1963. Let's assume the man was in his 90's since he had great grandchildren and he still worked. Based on eclipses that happened in the U.S. the closest one that happened was in August 7, 1869 would make that man 94 years old. There was another eclipse that happened on July 29, 1878 that would make the man 85 years old. It's feasible that he could have teenage great grand children at 85 and still work. So most likely his birthday was July 29, 1878. Back then they didn't keep records as well so it's understandable that he didn't know his birthdate.

    • @brodude3709
      @brodude3709 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      What state was this in? If he lived in the same state all of his life, you can figure out his birthdate by examining eclipses that passed by that state in the probable time frame.

    I made a point of looking at my cats during totality and they were just curious why I was outside. That's more of a rarity than the eclipse. I did notice that the usually active birds had all gone quiet for the most part. Chickens can only hold one thought at a time. When it's dark and then the sun comes out it's breakfast time. Simple.

    I have chickens and a very nice coop. But I'm in Florida so probably they'll just keep doing what they do. Should I bother to film my own birds?

    • @solareclipsetimer
      @solareclipsetimer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In Florida, you will only be in a partial eclipse and it won't get dark enough to affect them.

      @clipsetimer Thank you for replying. Well, no chicken activity here then. but I will hopefully go see a friend before the eclipse in NC then try to make the trip out to Texas. I loved 2017 and this one should be amazing.
      Oh by the way, I have an old video on my channel of the eclipse in 2017. You can hear your app on it at one point.

      I'm in pell city a little over an hour from destins place, (smarter everyday. I also have chickens, I want to take my kids and wife (pictured) up to TN to get in totality but that's hard for us to do. Assuming we are here at home, I got no problem filming them and posting it if you think it would be worth it.

    I think they just assume it's night time. Put a blanket over most bird cages and they either go to sleep or go apeshit screaming.
