In his book David Byrne talks about the variety of textures they could come up with before Jerry joined!! One of these configurations would include Chris on vibraphone. This is the first time I’m seeing footage of it, and it’s very cool!!
Getting better and better each and every day and decades later WOW, that music just draws you in....and they get better music equipment and strong voice and years of DANCE LESSONS, that is a inside joke...from David, "this is 2o years of dance lessons"
These sweet early tunes are great. With the blackened tooth he looks like he's been in a scrum in his rugby guernsey. I'll bet it is stagecraft, a forerunner to wearing a massive suit as he did later.
I used to have 2 or 3 bootlegs many years ago, but never heard this tune before now. It's of the same era as their cover of the 1910 Fruitgum Co. song "1-2-3 Redlight", but never turned up on anything available in the 80s that I am aware of. Great find!!
so odd to hear/see this. very loose. and the ending became a part from what would later be a song called Warning Signs on their second album. Love seeing them in the early stages of writing when the material wasn't even finished!
@sydbarret1973 According to the commentary on "Chronology", David said it happened when he was playing in the bathroom with his sister. I've also heard that he got mugged and that's what happened with his tooth, but I'll take David's word on what happened.
This version is really superior to the studio version, which kinda loses its innocence with Jerry Harrison’s fancy synth work replacing Chris’s xylophone, as well as the vocal arrangement being different
That doesn't capture what happened very well. Countless music critics of 1977 wrote explicitly that they were _not_ a punk band. And many of the music critics brought up "new wave," which in practice was a mixture of punk with other stuff -- which they in fact were. The rock music critics of about 1972 were mostly the hopeless "dilettantes" Iggy said they were, imo, but the rock music critics of 1977 were pretty good.

david byrne had a chipped tooth......it happened on the boat from scotland to america when his family emigrated
He was 2 when they moved. He wouldn't have the same teeth 😅

That's really interesting: Franz on the Xylaphone. Didn't know that he could play..
That there is a vibraphone my friend. Similar to a xylophone, but metal instead of wood.

first talking heads!!!

Daqui do Brasil. Talking Heads é foda
Such imagination! They're art students....
whoa... so different from the album version....
Well, they made a decision and revised it again :-)
Never heard this song ever.
jerry isnt there i am sad :-( but i love this!!!!
@@ensenada5757 nope, it's Chris! jerry joined in 77 right before they recorded their album. he was in modern lovers at this point
@@ensenada5757 In all fairness Chris looked much different back then
Yes
Looking a little preppy there
Leigh Harris lol u should see one of the performances from 1977 i forgot the name, he’s wearing a light yellow collar shirt and beige slacks 😂
yea, it does sound like something off of Little Creatures
I think so. That is the first thing that popped into my head once he started singing. I thought he was going through a hillbilly stage.
talking heads first casuals.
@TheNotSid but he got mugged while he was with Brian Eno, they dragged David into the bushes! Didn't he meet and start working with Eno in 77-78??
Ahh Jerry Harrison hadn't joined yet. Well I feel dumb now.
Does D.B. have a chipped front tooth ?
yes
It sure looks like it! Glad he got his teeth fixed! :-)
they brought jerry on a few months before making their first album
Pre big suit
Is there any more of this
Pre-Jerry?
yes
Here's proof that all those music critics and rock journalists from the 70s who labelled TH as a "punk band" had never seen nor heard them play.

new wave
Sure they were punk. There was no definite, codified “punk” style yet. That was part of the beauty of it all.
Art punk says hello
der geniale David Byrne :)
Isn't that Chris on the vibes?
yes
Where's Chris Frantz? Is he off camera hitting a wood block, or is than an early drum machine?
He's playing the vibraphone.
Chipped tooth ??
who recorded it ? what equipment did they use ? fascinated by the old super 8 with sound - you got about 3 minutes recording time with the best camera
This is not film. Magnetic tape.
