I see it all the time but usually it’s quite interesting to watch how they communicate with each other. Wish I could fully describe what I saw a few weeks ago amongst two hummingbirds in our neighbors yard. it was quite interesting but quite beautiful to be able to watch them.
I have been making improvements since I learned things watching you. I made a solar fountain (no takers yet) but also put a few more feeders. I have year round birds and they had babies. I noticed some guarding on one feeder so I put a privacy screen up. It’s working very well.
It's amazing to me - I have 2 feeders and all of my immediate neighbors have at least 1, and the fights are still ridiculous. So pretty and so mean! I may do this just to cover from the rain in the fall/winter - and maybe it can help in the snow too
Thank you!! We have 3 hummingbird birds, 2 male and a female and the males - they are fighting and dabully will perch and keep watch. This will let everyone have some!
Nice idea, Robbie =] Our Balt. Orioles only use the feeders + jam in the spring. Apparently they have better things to eat later in the season. I have umbrellas set up above the feeders and baths that aren't able to be placed in shade so the sugar water doesn't "boil" on hot days. I'll bet YOU have some ideas to protect the hummer food that doesn't involve sticking umbrellas all over the lawn!?? 😄
For heaven sake...I just found a couple vids on the shade problem, yours included. I should investigate more before asking dumb questions! 🤓Thank you again for your hard work!
Most backyard birders swear by offering grape jelly. As a best practice, offer up grape jelly that does NOT contain artificial sweeteners, colors or flavors. ❤
Robbie, thank you you for sharing such brilliant ideas, I especially like the idea of using a stapler to hold the cloth down instead of those clips. Instead of using the flags I was thinking about using DT shower curtains. Thanks again for sharing your brilliant ideas!
Thank you so much for this idea. My yard has no shade whatsoever and with this idea I can shade the feeders to a large extent. I can also shade my small fountain, with a little finessing on shade placement. I really appreciate you.
Since I've put hummingbird feeders out a couple months ago I've got one male that's started camping all three. He'll sit up in the tree most of the day and chase away any others that fly into the yard. Not sure how to keep him from monopolizing such a large area yet, 'cause he's really got the whole backyard on lockdown from his vantage point.
The orange hummingbird is a Rufus. They are very protective of a feeder. I have 2 at different ends of my patio so the Rufus can have his and the others (Alan, etc) can have their. But I will try your divider. I think the Rufus will still fight off the others. But we shall see.
I think this flag protection would work great for a shade cloth, which the flag will last for a while. Tie to some pole with some cable tie for all 4 corners. Just an idea, not even sure it's will work. I'm going try a leftover shirt fom my benefit instead of flag. Thanks again.
All my birds left a few months back and I can't figure out why. The doves are slowly coming back but all the smaller birds quit coming. Is this normal? They were here for years, I just have seed feeders. We did have an aggressive feral cat in our yard which I haven't seen in a few months and thats the only thing I can think of to spook them off, but cats have never bothered them before.
Would you mind, another viewer on another channel talked about how you (Robbie) did your container gardening;; and composting in place, topped with garden mix. I've looked for the episode, but can't find it. Could you identify it for me - either a link, pub date, or title? Thank you! (New viewer)
I have 11 hummingbird feeders 9 in the back and 2 in the front. 1 hummingbird has made a nest in our tree I think this is her second year if she’s the same one from last year. She runs all the hummingbirds away from all the feeders. She even monitors the ones in the front. I realized the other day that I have all these feeders to feed one bird 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I’m always amazed at how you come up with these great ideas.
My feeders are not together. Most about 6 ft apart or more and each has their own bird bath with solar fountain. I love it.
Great, thanks
👍🏼 Thank Robbie for sharing what a great suggestion. I have been looking for a way to shade my my feeders 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Another wonderfully, clever idea! ❤

Where I lived before I had a male who perched where he could see all my feeders and drove all others off. I never figured out how to stop that.

I’m going to try using a frizbee to make a shade cover for my feeders..
This works great 😊 thanks
That will work 😀

What you do to get rid of ants and honey bees invading the hummingbird feeder.
❤
Where is this happening? I have never seen so many hummingbirds!!
