Deadly Redback Spiders Giant Beetle Bug Battle Week 9

  • The Redback spider is just like the Black Widow spider, it enjoys living in dark secluded places in urban environments. From an infestation of Redback spiders I now have a out of control terrarium of life and death. Week 9 sees more baby spiders and large dominate females deciding the fate of everything that enters the spider tank. The spiderlings can easily escape via the very fine spider web they make. I use light to control where the spiderlings go as they seem to always move towards a bright light. This week was in the season where large Christmas beetles can be found. In a previous week we saw via time lapse the Redbacks control and kill a large beetle. This week we see the efforts multiple spider do to control what is a very powerful insect. It's a great illustration of the amazing spider web the Redback uses to disable the most powerful critters around. Once the spider has a chance it gets a spider bit in and then it's just a matter of waiting for the spider venom to take effect. Redback spiders love beetles as a meal. It was curious to see how all the large females worked to disable the big Christmas beetle. I'm out to prove the Australian Redback spider is the most deadly and dangerous spider on the planet. The Female Redback spiders are so adept at killing anything that enters their webs. Video posted as educational, documentary, and scientific and forms part of my Redback Spider study series of videos.
TH-camr Beanmeister22 had the idea for this Terrarium. It's decorated with a CAT Bulldozer toy, Thomas The Tank (Wooden Railway), Minecraft Minifigure Steve with TNT and Star Wars Millennium Falcon (Hot Wheels Diecast). This Terrarium has garden soil and other garden bugs that were in the compost heap. It's a fun and inexpensive home for the most interesting and deadly pets I have ever had.

The Redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii) is a species of venomous spider indigenous to Australia. It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus Latrodectus, the widow spiders. The adult female is easily recognised by her spherical black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side of her abdomen and an hourglass-shaped red/orange streak on the underside. Females have a body length of about 10 millimetres (0.4 in), while the male is much smaller, being only 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 in) long. Mainly nocturnal, the female Redback lives in an untidy web in a warm sheltered location, commonly near or inside human residences. It preys on insects, spiders and small vertebrates that become ensnared in its web. It kills its prey by injecting a complex venom through its two fangs when it bites, before wrapping them in silk and sucking out the liquefied insides. Male spiders and spiderlings often live on the periphery of the female spiders' web and steal leftovers. Other species of spider and parasitoid wasps prey on this species. The Redback is one of few arachnids which usually display sexual cannibalism while mating. The sperm is then stored in the spermathecae, organs of the female reproductive tract, and can be used up to two years later to fertilise several clutches of eggs. Each clutch averages 250 eggs and is housed in a round white silken egg sac. The Redback spider has a widespread distribution in Australia, and inadvertent introductions have led to established colonies in New Zealand, Japan, and in greenhouses in Belgium.
The redback is one of the few spider species that can be seriously harmful to humans, and its preferred habitat has led it to being responsible for the large majority of serious spider bites in Australia.

I want to start off by saying that I really enjoy this series. It is fascinating, entertaining, sometimes awesome (flamethrower), funny ("Do not ever attempt to keep these deadly spiders as pets... I'd like to show you my deadly pet spiders!"), and there is something cool about watching somebody learn about something through observation. I greatly encourage you to keep it going, possibly restarting with the knowledge you obtain about containing them, or even studying different spiders altogether. If the area around your home seems to have a red-back infestation, I would highly recommend putting together a similar container together with daddy long-legs inside, to get them to breed so that there are many of them, as there tend to not be very many red-backs where there are a lot of "daddy long-legs"... but you have to have the right kind.
    There are many types of "daddy long-leg" Species. There are "Opiliones", or "Harvestmen";
"Pholcidae", or "cellar spiders"; and then "crane flies". Harvestmen are oftentimes mistaken for spiders; but they are, in fact, not. If you put any species of Harvestmen into a spider tank, they will most likely die. Now, the family known as "cellar spiders" ARE actual spiders, many of which would be quite capable of killing other spiders like red-backs. They are the ones you want. Don't even think about crane flies. XD
The "Giant daddy long-leg" or "Pholcus phalangioides" is a cellar spider that is known to prey upon red-back spiders. It's light weight and extra long legs help it to confuse the red-back when it is on it's web, and also helps it to keep it's distance. They are also known as "long-bodied cellar spiders" or "skull spiders", because apparently they slightly resemble a human skull (I don't quite see it). They need a warm and relatively dry environment, and are considered to be completely harmless to humans. They tend to prey upon spider species that are harmful to humans, which is quite nice. I'm not sure exactly where you would find one in Australia, but good luck! XD

Imperator Seal: Their venom is harmless to people. Mythbusters disproved that. They extracted the venom and it didn't even pass the basic lethality test on a hamster. They measured the fang length and they can infact penetrate human skin. Adam himself let one bite him. He described a flash of warmth around the bite that painlessly dissapated.

Hey Leo! Hope you and the critters are doing well. I just heard something interesting that I wanted to share with you. Activated charcoal added to dirt in terrariums and gardens helps prevent mold and mildew. It's super cheap too. I put it in my planters. Works great. I bet a half and half mixture would be great for your new Spider Tank.

If you want to get rid of the moisture quickly, you can put a fan on a raised surface nearby and point it at the grate on the top of the tank. This will suck away ambient moisture in the tank, causing the water to evaporate to replace the moisture, only for it to be pulled away again. It should dry out the inside reasonably quickly.

The "daddy longlegs" spider looks to be a cellar spider (or at least it looks a lot like them which we have in the states). They DO in fact eat redbacks/widows and other venomous spiders while being harmless themselves. I bet if you put a bunch of daddy longlegs in there eventually they would overtake the tank

Thanks brother for the vids. Here in Washington state the Columbia river cuts the state in half, east and west. The East side is infested the west side not to much thanks to the wind and that massive river. Thank God i live in Wenatchee which is on the w3st side.

Can't wait for the video of the "egg sac" being laid, that's going to be an AMAZING video to see.
Are you going to be in need of getting your shed/videoing room and house being completely fumigated when the spider vids are done? Or did not many little 'uns escape? ( I just got that creepy itchy feeling of spiders crawling all over me thinking of that. Lol)
Love these videos, Leo. So well done. Your thirst for knowledge is a wonderful trait to have.
    Much respect.

those "other spiders" in the tank are juvenile Redbacks!
take a close look at the spider-lings, they have the same mottles white/brown/yellow colouring as the mystery spiders.
i'm in the US and we have the black widow and they look the same when they are young. i kept seeing them and wondered what they were and they always seemed to be on widow webs. so on a hunch i googled juvenile black widow and, voila! so weird how we have essentially the same spider on the other side of the world.

the other critters probably died to the mite infestation, i have seen similar scenarios on other bug videos but it might also be because of the fungi that as been growing on the tank, actually it would probably be an interesting idea to move the action into a bigger tank and probably more action could take place, anyway keep up the good work =)

Any sort of corpses and debris that stays in the tank has the potential to decay with mold. After a few days to a week, it's best to remove the dead bugs and carrots, mainly to reduce the chance of rotting, but to also open more space for the spiders, as it can become quite cramped in there.
Also, people can make quite a lot of money as spider breeders. I'm not sure how legal that is where you live, but those spiderlings can be quite pesky and hard to contain. Just a suggestion.

Is it the bite that kills the prey or is it simply stunned for the kill later? I suppose I wonder if a creature like the Beatle is bitten can it recover if able to escape - obviously not much chance of getting away in the tank. great update Leo. keep it up!

I wish more people made terrariums like this with multiple species of creature fighting for survival in their own small ecosystem, it becomes most interesting when two different species are able to successfully survive by breeding fighting and feeding off of the other and hopefully they would also be provided other more docile type creatures in their ecosystem to hunt I think that would be awesome
