Why avoid using the word 'colonised'? The Saxons colonised Britannia (which they renamed England after taking it over) for the same reason that modern migrants are colonising England now. They want the wealth of the place for themselves. There was war then, cf. The King Arthur myths, Churches of Bassa, etc. The Saxons took advantage of the removal of all men from Britain to the continent to fight in Roman civil wars (Gildas). The Saxon- Celtic wars lasted for nearly 1,400 years (terminating with the extirpation of Scottish clans post 1745), whilst the culture wars between Scots, Welsh, English and Irish continue to this day. The equivalent war (less violent, more political - Sadiq Khan bans the English flag on London taxis) is breaking out now between English residents and these new colonists to England. Irish (calling themselves the Gaelic Scoti) likewise colonised Argyll in what was Pictland (Picts, recent linguistic studies demonstrate - the language is an isolating creole which employs the Old Irish lexicon as the lexifier - are an amalgam of Iron Age Goidelic Celts with Bronze Age residents), which they ultimately took over, culturally, in its entirety and renamed Scotland. Meanwhile the Brittonic Britons (not unlike modern UK residents migrating overseas to Australia to flee a changing England) fled the Saxon colonisation of Britain to Armorica which they took over and renamed Brittany - "Little Britain ". There is nothing new under the Sun. It's all about either getting control of wealth of others or fleeing conflict. There are no other reasons. p.s. I have found historical evidence to suggest the Early Medieval Church introduced Christian principles which shamed the Pagan natives into unresponsiveness (being violent is un-Christian), rather as woke ideology today shames English people who are afraid of being colonised by calling them racist. There is no such thing as an indigenous human being. We're all colonists. We all occupied land and took it over by a multitude of means including by violence and intimidation. It all about who wins and the determination to do so.
