Daniel O Kelly (born Daniel Kelly; 1974), known as Dan Kelly, is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist. He has released music as part of Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males. Dan Kelly grew up in Queensland, on the Gold Coast, attended a Catholic school, in Beenleigh, and was the second oldest of six children. He learnt the guitar at thirteen and later studied Environmental Science at Griffith University in Brisbane. He formed his first band, Nord, in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne in 1996.[citation needed]
Kelly reflected saying "I moved down to St Kilda in '96 and lived with my uncle [Paul Kelly] and aunt and worked as a dishwasher for years. Then I was the kitchen-hand and after that I worked as a cook. I was making my way up through that world, just meeting people and trying to play in bands, and by the end of that period, probably around 2000, I had made enough friends and played in enough bands that I built a little bit of confidence to write my own songs." Peace out.
And the second Missy opens her mouth, I love her voice! 🥰
Me too
Missy is definitely the female Paul Kelly, she's great, always makes me smile. Multi instrumentalist too.
I loved the end part where Missy sang and Paul spoke the same lyrics…
Dan just doesn’t have the expressiveness to pull off a fairly featureless melody like that. Paul and Missy both brilliant.
You can see Missy steel herself for the "heard his spine snap like a roo shooter's shot" line
There’s just something about Paul’s tone it’s just gets right into you…
This is on the TV show "Rockwiz". They have a duet performance by the two guest singer's that were on the panel with audience members for the quiz show. Australian Crawl singer James Reyne in the background.
Agreed paul doesn’t have what is classically referred to as a great voice but his vocals are arresting and he pulls you in with his cadence and storytelling. So wish Paul had sung all of this he is greatness personified when it comes to storytelling!
I saw Dan Kelly 5 times when they were touring many many years ago… I love love love Dan Kelly!
I agree with you, Paul Kelly is an amazing storyteller. Best gig of my life was seeing Paul Kelly in Derby, Western Australia, under the stars in the heat and humidity.
Yes is all about the emotion conveyed by both Missy and Paul 💕
And I absolutely beautiful song.❤
Omg how awesome it is you are reacting to this song . Wow this song brings tears to my eyes every time.
Love Dan's intro to Paul's song Careless (live). Also love Dan doing Drunk on Election night.
You are a really good critic, I like your approach.
Thank you :) I think honesty is important because if a person likes everything then reactions don't become authentic ya kniw
I could listen to Paul Kelly all day and Missy is incredible. Never heard of Dan before. I'll save my thoughts on Dan till I've heard some more of his music
Dan is Paul’s nephew, been in Paul’s band for nearly 15 years now.
@@devo6488 thanks
Paul and Missy have such distinctive voices.
Yep, your absolutely right, the beginning of this song with Kelly or Missy higgins is brillant..warms you up to the whole song..
I'm unfamiliar with this one but the cadence of the vocals and the chord progression took me straight to "From Little Things, Big Things Grow", another Kev Carmody (with Paul Kelly) song.
For sure. That is because both were originally written and performed by the legendary Kev Carmody I believe. I love Kev's original version of Driving Woman and have it on high rotation.
Written by Paul and Kev around a campfire on a camping trip, according to Paul's bio.
I think this song uses the ‘50s chord progression (I, vi, IV, V) 🤔 in the key of C major
@@Dr_KAP In that case...Kappy...it takes me back to Lollipop - "Lollipop. lollipop ooh lolli lolli lolli..." Suck it and see. Once again you are correct Kappy but it probably goes back to Bach...Ring Bach and his Circle of Fifths.
Oh boy. You are verging on the one song I'd love to see you react to, Missy Higgins doing a cover of Paul Kelly's "If I Could Start Today Again". Just the best of both worlds.
Yes - from the JJJ Tribute concert - and her version of 'You can put your shoes under my bed'
Dan IMHO sings it perfectly, almost deadpan, the monotony of every day, the harsh conditions, I get the most vivid images. Missy over sings it.
If you have been in the desert, or worked wild horses, it hits right home.
Must watch Paul sing the entire song, just feels completely different.
Colour and emotion to tell the story is key with both Paul and Missy Higgins
Paul and Missy are story tellers
Dan can sing and you’ve been impressed by him before. To me though, this didn’t sound like Dan singing, this sounded like Dan trying to do a Paul Kelly impersonation.
Maybe he was intimidated? Maybe it was homage to an idol? Who knows?
One thing I do know, if it was me singing, we all would have turned off 3 seconds in.
Exactly
Dan Kelly is Paul Kelly’s nephew
@@MrsWishieWashy well that makes more sense. A little egg on my face given I heard the name Dan and assumed Dan Sultan. I was listening not watching.
The rest of the comment stands though. Dan Kelly can sing as well and when he does he sounds like Dan whereas here he sounds like an imitation of Paul.
Thanks for clearing up who we were really listening to.
Impersonation is what occured to me too
Missy has great songs.
Kind of agree with you on that. Of course its harder for me to hear because i have two Lorikeets that keep squawking haha
And she can play mean piano.
Missy’s solo version of this song was about 8 videos down in the search results….
would find it interesting to hear you listen to Paul and missy's different versions of his song if I could start today again. neither is better. Both awesome but hers gives me chills.
Yess
I never noticed the way Paul K looks at Missy like an adoring father figure. Knowing as he ages he is leaving the Australian music industry in good hands
As per Evan's message earlier, this is a long way from the best version of this song. Do yourself a MASSIVE favour and listen to the version sung by Glenn Richards, Missy and Paul. It is worth listening to the intro by Kev Carmody (The legend who wrote the song).
This is my alltime favourite song.
th-cam.com/video/tR4ioLnFWq4/w-d-xo.html
Agree!!
He's singing the wife's thoughts
I liked it but I think Dan fell short trying to sound like Paul in a song style that really suits Paul Kelly’s voice and style
I love Rockwiz!!!!!
EVERYONE loves Rockwiz! Well e'one that counts
@@glenthorne5936 true! 😄
Love Rockwiz and miss it.
Balladeer! Is the term you are looking for.
Dan's not a bad singer by any means, but I prefer the version from "Cannot buy my soul," with Glenn Richards of Augie March joining Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins instead.
No doubt at all in my mind! When I first heard the version with Glenn Richards as the opening vocal (followed by Paul, then Missy, then Paul and Missy together) it became my favourite song. While I like Dan Kelly's voice for other things it does not suit here.
Glenn Richards has one of the best voices in Australia.
Also just in case you don't know it but a Drover is basically a Sheep herder. Also the song is literally a conversation. :)
Doesn't 'drover' apply to anyone who moves large amounts of animal stock? I think it would then apply to cattle, horses and sheep?
@@matthalpin1981 would depend. But it at least gives him an idea. Since and I could be wrong it's not used in America. 🤔
Drover =Cowboy
Paul Kelly sounds a bit like Bob Dylan on this one.
Dan Kelly is Paul Kelly's nephew!
I think you’re just looking at this the wrong way. This is folk, it’s about the story rather than the vocals. Dan Kelly is Paul’s nephew and is a talented muso but here he’s got the set up of the song. This in my opinion could stand as a poem just on the lyrics and I’d sit it second behind the man from snowy river as Australia’s greatest ever poem.
How many verses? I checked out really early.
You missed out on Missy's amazingness
Another RocKwiz live song. Dan is Paul's nephew. The song was written and sung by Kev Carmody. The original is better.
Dan is Paul Kelly's nephew
Thank you!! I could hear the similarities!! If you close you're eyes and listen.👌👌👌
Sounds like a young Paul 👍
@@lukerawson4565 lol actually I was knitting while listening to it and thought he sounded so like Paul Kelly he must be related some how
The problem you have is almost all the terminology is strange to you like when they say he was thrown from a horse and died as the doctor was 6 his away but that's what the old outback was like before the Royal Flying Doctors
Yep old mate didn’t know 3/4 of the story. The job Dan was doing was a hard task to pull off . I think he done a fantastic job. The story needs to flow as intended.
You’re dead right man, Dan is killing, not it, but the song. I’m not waiting to hear the end.
Paul’s voice has more dynamics than Dan in this vid.
Sometimes it's not the singer but the song.
Paul Kelly's nephew supposedly. I could hear it in him... I closed my eyes and it's just the same as a young Paul Kelly...
Paul wouldn't of had him on otherwise...
Family...
ive seen missy higgins live in brisbane,as much i dispise her politics, her music is good aslong shes not going politics. however i think delta goodrem is better. paul kelly is a legend in australia
He's Paul's sonl
Nephew I believe
I agree with everything you said about Paul - I love him immensely, but he is a far better storyteller/songwriter than a singer. I also totally disagree with what you said about Dan (Paul kelly's nephew) - you missed the opening when Paul said the 1st part is from the female point of view specifically so Dan was singing from that side (and Missy's role as you found later was completely different). Its also very important to note that when Paul 1st came in - the music changed, the tempo of the song changed. And, finally, I have always considered Missy a female version of Paul - her songwriting, her interpretation of other's music, is spot on and not necessarily the best vocalist, I always find myself captivated by her voice. It was interesting listening to and watching your reaction. If you ever get the time, have a listen to John Butler and Missy Higgins performances at JJJs Paul Kelly Tribute concert.
Kev Carmody songs het you every time
I agree with you about Dan.
He does have some great stuff that I like but yeah....I think it would've been better with Missy and Paul.
My opinion.
Yes Paul is an Australian icon and Missy's great too and Dan is too.
I just don't think he brang much to the version of this track if ya know what I mean?
I've got nothing against Dan
Literally my thoughts
I have no idea who Dan is?
I think he is Paul's nephew. Dan was on a couple of Rockwiz shows and that's all I know about him.
Ok cool, thank you 😊
I’m sure I have heard Dan Sultan sing Dan’s part and it is a lot better.
Its not Dan Sultan, Its Dan Kelly, pauls nephew.
I’m not saying this is Dan Sultan because I know it’s not. I’m saying there’s another version of this with him in it!! Re read what I wrote!!
@@melanieslack8645 apologies, I did just re read it.
I find Dan Kelly is very hit and miss with his songs. He can be amazing but he can also be unlistenable
Doesn't Dan sound like Paul.
Not really not on this one at least
Ha ha, Dan just has a style that doesn’t appeal to you. Leave the poor dude alone. He has a nice enough voice.
Not really
I gotta keep it honest lol like I mentioned he might be a beast but here...nah I didn't hear it at all. Even emotionally I got nothing
Can't believe you beat up Dan so much, was it really that bad?
Thought it was a brilliant build up to the song, go Dan that was fantastic!
He might be great but on this I didn't care for his voice. There's was no emotion for me
@@ThatSingerReactions nah. Your clearly not understanding the lyrics. Dan is conveying the widow & her roller coaster of emotions, Paul is generically telling the mid part of the story ( basically speaking it ) & missy is telling the horses side of the story & the accident. The melody builds through out . I know you don’t understand 3/4 of the story , the vastness of the land , hardships & the love of the husband & father that’s all in the song. For 4 years I thought this was about a white farmer & his wife ! I was blown away that it was a about a aboriginal family & his whole family helped the father who would have been on the absolutely minimalist of wages in the harshest of climates doing the hardest of jobs . It hit home to me some casual racism, at the same time knowing the hours of tears & emotions I’ve had for this family that I’ve never known . What a story & beautiful melody.

Here’s the lyrics mate .
She buried him down on the edge of town
Where the brigalow suckers on the cemetery creep
She stood with them children in a heavy brown gown
What you want you just can't always keep
"I'm sorry", I says, "I knew him so well"
Though your body is young you just never can tell
When the hand of fate rings the final death knell"
She just turned with the saddest of smiles
She says "At the start well we knewed it so hard
We were always dealt the severest of cards
Honeymoon spent droving Jamieson's stock
Through the wildest winter you seen
Romantic notions of horses and land
They were soon dispelled as a fantasised dream
Watching cattle at night in the mid-winter cold
Turns a person, both wiry and old
The flame of the breakfast fire'd be dead
As the sun rose up he'd be miles up ahead
I'd be breaking the camp there and rolling the beds
While he fanned the stock wider for feed
When the weather turned sour with the onset of rain
An' the truck'd bog down to the axle mains
He'd move ahead with pack saddles and chains
And I'd wait in the mud by the road
With the blankets and canvas there hung out to dry
With nothing for heat 'cause you couldn't light a fire
With no stock permit for the forthcoming shire
The dog'd whimper in the winter wind rain
Cattle don't camp where they're sloshing in rain
They keep walking all night like a dog on a chain
He'd be red eyed and weary with a pack horse gone lame
I'd sit miles behind in the mud
It was down through Charleville up to Julia Creek
Living on syrup and damper and salted corn meat
We had nothing but the 'roos and the mailman to meet
We'd move up and down with the rains
But them inland skies have the starriest of nights
With the dance of the fire throwing flickering lights
The beauty of it's sunsets were a constant delight
I felt that nature had let me intrude
The enormous vastness of them inland plains
Gives you a lonely contentment to which you can't put a name
It's satisfied glow city folks seldom attain
They spend life on a right rigid rail
The kids got their schooling from the government mail
We posted their work in at each cattle sale
They considered the learning a self imposed jail
They'd rather help their father and fail
Early last month at the end of the dry
He was given a horse nobody could ride
Alert were his ears with a fire in his stride
He was young and his spirit was wild
To catch him each morning was an hour long battle
We had to collar rope his near side to throw on the saddle
He'd bite and he'd strike, he made my nerves rattle
Pandemonium reigned with each ride
It was a hot summers' mornin' at the government bore
There was stillness around that I'd never felt before
How could he know it was fate at his door
That was stealthily watchin' his moves
He mounted up quick taking slack from the reins
Grasped a full hand of hair from the horses long mane
He'd just hit the saddle when the horse went insane
Churning dust in a frenzy of fear
The girth on the saddle let go at the ring
The surcingle slipped it was impossible to cling
The horse felt it go made a desperate fling
He was thrown to the length of the reins
I heard his spine snap like a 'roo shooters' shot
He'd busted his back on the concreted trough
Sickness and fear were the feelings I got
For the doctor was a six hour drive
I looked at his face and his colour turned white
He turned slowly and said "I can't make it till night
My body is broken, I'm bleedin' inside"
And the life slowly drained from his eyes
I'll sell up the plant and I'll move here to town
Before the winter returns with a chill on the ground
For what I've just lost can seldom be found
I was blessed with the gentlest of men
Eventually the children will move to the east
But I couldn't stand the bustle of even a quiet city street
I'll stay in the scrub here where my heart really beats
For some dogs grow too old for change.
@@ThatSingerReactions I have to agree with you here. Dan was not great on this song. Much better to listen to the one with Glenn Richards as the first singer followed by Paul and Missy. see my recent comment for the link. Really builds up the song a lot better.
Dan sounds like he's trying to hard to be a country singer... one of our legendary country singers called Slim Dusty to be exact... He sounds like he's trying to take Slims style and meld it to Pauls style. Rather sad but understand why he'd try to. Droving Woman is clearly a song meant to be a country song. He's to tense while singing it. Doesn't seem to 'feel' the story behind it. What he needs to do is go send some time droving cattle. He'll get an understanding of the kind of spirit in his song that he's lacking.
Dan is what we aussies call a pretender, basically he's trying to hard to be something he's not and it shows.. big time... Oh and I just realized, he's trying to take on a 'Dreaming' vibe. Which... he isn't able to pull off. Anyone who's listened to a Dreaming Tale (specially the ones that are musically told), knows that there's a quality of Dreaming music that luls your spirit in an almost sleepy way but keeps you alert all at the same time.
So if I'm correct your job is to reinforce how good these people are because you have achieved so much youself
Don't be a smart ass Garry Buckley...
Why watch the video if ya did and talk like that?
Go and watch something else.
Nick's a friend.
So tell us what have you done Garry Buckley?
No you are not correct at all. I'm being a reactor. What you should appreciate is me not pandering because I have a massive Australian fanbase. So I'm not gonna pretend to like 100% of everything. It's my reaction to what I hear . It's not about achieving. Don't know what you're even talking about
None of it really worked for me to be honest, blah
