  • Standing over 2000 feet high, we gazed over the entire vast terrain of Zion National Park, Utah. A lesser known route led us to this breathtaking view; the East Mesa Trail. Come along with Judy and I as we explore and explain how amazing and attainable this hike is.

    Nothing wrong with a closed trail if it gives you smaller crowds. 😄 Always like them side trails too. What a great lookout!

      I absolutely loved this hike, the bush that we started in was so beautiful, and at almost any time you could wander off and find a spectacular view just off the trail. You and I both love exploring off the main trails, and the rewards can be astounding! This hike is very underrated in my opinion. As far as I know this is still the only way into Observation Point. Thanks for checking this out David!

    Thank you so much for this video! I'm going in September and saw that the weeping rock trail was closed, so I'm relieved that there is another seemingly better route to get to observation point!!

      You are most welcome! It is a wonderful option to hike this path, and the view at Observation Point is absolutely stunning! It has become more popular no doubt, but if you are there early you can likely enjoy the whole experience without seeing too many other hikers. All the best, I hope you love the experience!

    I've been to this very spot. Utah is beautiful. I took my family to Utah in 2007 and 2008 for week long rafting on the Green River through Desolation Canyon and also on the Yampa River through Dinosaur National monument. Holiday Expeditions was a great outfit. We also toured almost every corner of Utah including Zion.

      Wow this sounds like an amazing and memorable trip Martin! We didn't get to explore too much beyond our days hiking in Bryce and Zion, other than road trips to the North Rim and to Lake Powell in AZ. Rafting down there would be awesome! One day we plan to hike rim to rim👍

      Hiking Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon would be awesome. I have to laugh when I think of this since it reminds of my youngest daughter complaining about how tired she was of hiking all the while doing cart wheels on the climb up out of the canyon.

      @@hannahmilner2671 I imagine it would be fine, but I would contact Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort, they are located along the drive to the East Mesa Trail. I think they would be able to tell you the conditions of the trail and the rough road leading back to it.

    My buddy and I are wanting to do a backpacking trip that includes this trail on New Years. Obviously there would be snow and ice, we are experienced backpackers and Eagle Scouts. Thoughts?

    • @LatitudesWildernessFilms
      @LatitudesWildernessFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only difficulty would be finding your way if the trail is covered in snow. There were no markers on trees when we were there. Watch for openings in the tress to indicate the right direction. Once you get closer to Observation Point you leave the bush and it opens up, you may have to look around more carefully to keep on the trail at that point. I'm sure the view would be amazing in the snow and worth the effort!

    Hey so I really want to go to Observation Point and saw that East Mesa Trails was one of the few trails that can get there. Was it hard to navigate to get to east Mesa trails and were there any fees to park there?

    • @LatitudesWildernessFilms
      @LatitudesWildernessFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, it was free to park there at the time of our trip (which was in 2019 if I remember correctly) and it was pretty straight forward to find the trailhead. Hope you can enjoy it for yourself soon!

    Hi just want to know is there any entrance fee/ticket or parking fee to hike to Observation Point from East Mesa Trail? I’m planning to go visit Zion NP, since its a last minute plan the shuttle passes are sold out. So I’m planning to just hike Observation Point.

    • @LatitudesWildernessFilms
      @LatitudesWildernessFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there Katrina! When we did this hike there were no fees. Access and parking were both free. We had a National Parks Pass that we kept with us, but we never needed to show it to anyone. I would advise you to purchase a day pass from the Zion gate on your way to the hike, since technically once you hike into the park from the East Mesa Trail, it would be required to have a pass. I hope you enjoy the beautiful hike and the amazing views!

      We were about 5-6 hours total, but we were definitely taking it easy and spent lots of time at Observation Point. I apologize but I can't tell you off hand how many miles it was, I would guess around 8 miles or so. Hope this helps 👍

    • @LatitudesWildernessFilms

      Hi Andrea, from what I understand there is no real danger of wildlife on that trail or anywhere in Zion for that matter. As long as you respect the environment and don't leave any trash or leftover food behind, and do not offer food to any animal you may encounter, you won't have any issues.

    A $250 fine for removing a survey marker. Lol. And to think I recall a story about back in the old days the penalty for moving a survey marker in Ontario (or maybe it was Canada) was the death penalty.
