Thank you for this video. I was able to pick up a solenoid from local repair shop and swapped it out. Winch is working A1 now. Thanks again!

Where did you connect the red cable from switch ( battery red or winch red ) ???

On a KFI 2500. # winch kit, Hooking the small red wire directly to the battery should I use a inline fuse link? An what amp should it be? Thanks great video

I would wire as instructed by the manufacturer. With that said adding a fuse will not harm anything just make sure you have the proper fuse for the gauge of wire being used.

I got a second hand winch and a second hand quad. Winch didn't work on the quad and I figured out it was the solenoid.
I tried just swapping the wires one by one like you did but saw smoke. Could you tell me where your wires went. Blue, yellow, red, black?

red/black to battery and blue/yellow to winch. if it smokes, its shorting

Do these universal solenoids last for a while or do they burn up quickly?

    • @AutomotiveAuthority

I have never had a customer complain about the solenoids going bad. I have one on my own personal ATV and have used for years without an issue.

Thanks for the reply. I have a snow plow with a key fob controller and I don't like how it operates. Every time you tap the button, the winch operates for a second or two and does not allow much adjustability of the up and down of the blade, and sometimes I need to lift or drop the blade a RCH up or down. I'm hoping this controller does the trick.

They are as dependable as your average automotive grade solenoids used for door locks, etc. The Western snowplow on my RAM truck is actuated by the same type of solenoid and I've replaced on in six years. They are "weather resistant", but not "water proof". Mounting it in a dry location, like the engine compartment or enclosing it somehow to protect it will add to the longevity of the switch. I have a solenoid mounted in a small plastic food container to seal it from the environment.
