    i think they should've just started with remaking SH1. its way more dated and less "sacred". but as for SH2 it became too much of a sacred cow to people, at this point its probably better not to touch it so that you dont get all this toxic hate. i kinda feel sorry for Bloober

      Sigh...here we go again. Okay so there are many obvious reasons tp start with 2 instead of 1. It's the most popular, it's separated from all the other titles, if you started with 1 and it flopped hard then you only get half of a duology. (1 and 3) I mean sure if you like counting in order it makes sense but there are way more reasons to do 2 instead of 1.

    Silent Hill 2 is like the Mona Lisa of video games. At the end of the day, they're just a really solid video game and painting. Much like how the Mona Lisa was hyped up in the 1500s as this amazing work of art to people who weren't able to actually see it, Silent Hill 2 has been endlessly hyped up by video essays as this immensely deep experience to people who haven't been able to play it. It's become impossible to approach either for the first time without preconceived notions of what they are what they're suppose to be.

    I think one of the worst (and perhaps only) progression blocks in the game is at the apartments, where you can't enter one of the rooms before you meet Eddie. James' thoughts straight up says that a mysterious force is preventing him from entering, and that he must meet someone first before being allowed in - It's so arbitrary, they couldn't have thought of a better method than that?

      Or the infamous juice chute...

    I feel similar about StarWars and the reception the new movies had. They could have done nothing that evoked the same fascination I had for the originals when I watched it as a kid. People have changed, games have changed and by it's very definition, a remake won't be as groundbreaking as SH2 was at its time. Bloober has an exceptional good art direction, great tech, okay gameplay and they suck at writing. Forcing a good story on them is the best thing that could have happened to SH and Bloober. Still nothing to win here.
    I miss the days when games are judged by nothing else than the game itself. Now we are talking about marketing fails, Konamis motivation, budgets, political agendas, monetization plans. Cynical toxic nonsense that only benefits a couple of youtubers who create outrage clickbait. Thanks for not being one of them and thumbs up for this very fair and balanced take.

    I’m perfectly fine with this remake as long as they don’t touch the story and the pacing of which it is told. Problems like James sitting like a sad puppy in front of a noose and “reap what you sow” come to mind.
    I’m hoping that the problems seen are the fault of the marketing team, as much as I don’t like Bloober. I have a small amount of hope but I’m pretty concerned.
    I see remakes as a way for newer audiences to view old content in a better light and this game in particular holds a special place in my heart. If this sucks, then those newer audiences will be playing a weaker product that doesn’t come close to the original.
    Let’s just hope that the movie works as a good adaptation also :)

      Problem is they lost the source code for the original games a long time ago, so while it wouldn’t be impossible to properly remaster these games for new platforms, it’s gonna take a lot of work. A lot more work than Konami is willing to put in effort for. I mean, the remasters for 2 & 3 are considered some of the worst remasters of all time for a good reason. Working off incomplete beta source code on top of a very strict timeline with an inexperienced team that was not experienced in porting older games led to the HD collection of Silent Hill being so infamous.

      I doubt it. They don’t have the source code anymore. I would think they still have the source code for the HD remasters, but those were not good and judging from Konami’s current releases, they aren’t willing to do much beyond porting old ROMs and games that already had HD releases.
      Technically they probably could clean up the HD remasters, include a ROM of the first game, and port the PC version of 4 (which is already on GoG, just a heads up there), but again, that’s way more work than they’re willing to do for a franchise they haven’t really cared much for in the past.

    A video this fantastic, one that discusses a point of view for the Remake in a polite manner that I personally share and yet a channel that deserves way more attention than what it currently has. Not that the numbers matter as much as the people watching your art and discussions but nonetheless, an amazing video. I feel like in our current day and age we seem to have come across a problem of impossible expectations and a generally overwhelming amount of negativity and cynicism in the video gaming sphere. One where people will go out of their way to use absolute statements to define their thoughts on art and ultimately entertainment like "this game is dead" or "the rise and fall of" or "the downfall of" and so on so forth. It's something that I find quite confusing because despite understanding that the current circumstances in our world have lead to people getting stuck in cycles of escapism and fear I still find it odd that people have started taking out their frustration on things they probably shouldn't be too serious about in the first place. Ultimately it's weird that just because you like something that it would have to be a part of your identity especially in the unhealthy manner that it is for so many people these days. It's to the point where they forget to use common sense when addressing literally anything. I just hope things would change over time. >w

    Tho I agree with you that we should wait with our final judgement of the SH2 remake, I do understand the public outcry at any detail that doesn't seem quite right with it (going by the trailers). We Silent Hill fans had our hearts broken way too many times already. At this point it is just a bloody mess in our collective ribcage. The titles most fans still remember fondly are just too precious to them and therefore they're maybe a little too sensitive when it comes to any form of "misrepresentation" of the series. Hell, I feel the same way. The mishaps from the past (looking extra intensely at you Homecoming, Downpour and Book of Memories) left the IP pretty much dead in the corner. And the attemt to revive it, tho a happy occasion at the core, is pretty scary. Especially when they start with our favourite child. *hissssss*

    A common criticism that really annoys me is people saying that the over-the-shoulder camera angles look "too similar to the Resident Evil remakes." While I think it would be nice to have fixed camera angles again and an option to switch between either perspectives (there's at least one RE inspired game that came out around the time of the RE 2 remake and it had the option which RE 2 lacked), but these people are acting like the Resident Evil remakes invented that camera angle or were a trademark. That camera angle is nothing new and has been around for years (even the Silent Hill and Resident Evil PS3/Xbox 360 era games had that camera angle). By that logic, we should say that every fps game look too much like Call of Duty specifically because of the camera angle and not the rest of the gameplay.

    i’m not making this up they straight up said it in their silent hill transmission where they announced all of those new silent hill games
    i guess the one thing the remake has going for it is that akira yamaoka and masahiro ito on the project that’ll at least make sure the game sounds good and that monsters will look frightening but would i prefer they went further and reached out and got some more members of key members of team silent like the original writers and directors this would help squash any concerns of blooper team somehow fumbling up with story

    this game really deserves a remake, there hasn't been a lot of modern games that have a deeper story than SH2. i think its nice to newer audiences to have a game that makes you wonder (if the original story is not changed), but if this remake turns out wrong, at least they will feel the need to play the original
    even though, lots of people already think (based on the trailer) that the game is crap, it won't matter if the game is "good", as everyone will play it having their opinion already set as "bad"

  • @DankoDeadZone
    @DankoDeadZone 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    At the end of the day SH2 DOES need a remake because of how bad Konami fumbled keeping a working version of it so now you really need to go out of your way to get a version of the original working making accessibility an issue. Yeah we have the Enhanced Edition but i don't expect everyone to know or go and get it. And to be honest the over the shoulder camera is not even a bad idea.
    What worries me specifically is the perceived lack of subtlety every scene shown in every trailer has and the latest trailer is what really broke the camel's back. It doesn't help that Bloober team has made a career based on copying SH2's style but none of its substance so that's already not a great track record.
    That said, good video. Emotions are running high on this so seeing a well articulated video on the topic regardless of the stance is nice.

    My three concerns, in order of priority, are thus:
    1) The story is faithful and doesn't change anything, at least not too majorly. Or worse case scenario: tries to "fix things for modern sensibilities". I know the acting is going to be different, and anybody with their head on straight knows that remakes are going to be by their very nature of being REMAKES are going to have differences in the acting and performance.
    2) The graphics are solid and are stable, and so far, it at least looks pretty good even if some environmental details could be better. I would certainly hope that with 20+ years of tech advancement, Bloober can achieve details that Team Silent could only have dreamed of on the PS2 due to the little black box's limited hardware and memory. Blood splatters from enemies should be able to drip down walls, the grime should feel like you could scrape a big slimy chunk with your finger just by looking at it, and the fog can move in ways that weren't possible with the PS2.
    3) The combat isn't Whack-a-monster like Homecoming and Downpour where it took AGES to kill a single damn monster. I know combat isn't a priority in the genre, but you should be weary to fight in a horror game due to limited resources, not because aiming is like trying to play basketball while blindfolded and sitting in a rocking chair. I love how people always said older games made the combat bad on purpose, but that was obviously not the case, they were always trying, as seen with SH3 having one of the largest arsenals in any game in the series, and SH4 experimenting with weapon degradation long before the likes of Breath of the Wild. Long as James isn't swimming in bullets or wielding guns with expert precision while having 10 minute battles where monsters just swarm in from invisible doors like they're in Doom, I'm fine with things being more responsive than they were 23 years ago.
    Obviously, only time will tell if this remake manages to be a worthy alternative, or just another reminder that Konami has lost their way.

After years of complete and utter disrespect to the fans who made them who they are, they pull this out and expect us to rejoice, I didn't, it's so transparent.

Doesn't mean SH2 is un-improvable upon, it certainly is, but core stuff like fixed angles and subtlety shouldn't be changed for the sake of "modern audiences".
    Also yeah trying to open every door to see they're blocked doesn't seem fun, but... that moment a door *does* open? Oooohohoho
    Dunno if it would be the same hit if everything was openable.

      Yeah, at some point i said I don't think people inherently deserve to experience something just because they don't gel with certain parts of it, but an entryway into it existing doesn't bother me much either. There's no way this remake is going to replace the OG anyways, so we'll still have something to gatekeep lol

    • @Mantosasto
      @Mantosasto 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Alekzandr That makes sense. I guess my main problem is I highly value experiencing things for the first time, and experiencing a not as good version of something, SH2 in this case, lessens the impact of experiencing the original thing for the first time.
      P.S: I'd never used the word 'experiencing' that much in a sentence in my life, I should go to bed, haha

    Too much drama with the development of this remake and most of it is Konami’s fault. Stop defendig all the drama up until now by blaming the sceptical gamers. If Capcom can do it, so can Konami if they put more effort into it. People were sceptical of the RE4 remake too but Capcom didn’t mess up things like Konami does now. This whole process has been a mess from the get go. Even Bloober Team has come out and admit this whole thing is messy, blaming it on Konami when it comes to the promotion trailer etc. Let’s hope Bloober Team pulls it off in the end🙌🏾

      Call me crazy but I feel like remaking re4 is easier then remaking sh2. Sh2 only really works cause it came out at the right time, in todays era it’s not really special anymore

    • @mr.sinjin-smyth
      @mr.sinjin-smyth 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think in most cases, publishers are who decides in releasing trailers, not the game studio. In this case, it was Konami and not Bloober who decided on the trailer. Anyway, there's no pleasing SH purists, they're on a whole different level of crazy. I've played and finished SH2 4 times, and I welcome this upcoming remake with cautious optimism. It's guaranteed to be a big hit despite whatever launch day issues it will have. It's the ideal entry point for potential newcomers to Silent Hill, and with 2024 being a quiet year for Resident Evil, there's no better time to do so. SH2 Remake needs to release sometime between September and December 2024. With Alone in the Dark arriving in March 2024, this year of 2024 should be the renaissance year for both Silent Hill and Alone in the Dark.

    I still dont get the hate about the chunky combat. You're a civilian man, not a soldier. i understand the anger about the combat roll they could've just added a block or a way to just run after you get hit, but even then most of the people complaining probably have only played SH2 or None of the games because rolling is in many of the later games.

  • @adriank8792

    Bloober gets a lot hate from people who misunderstood the plot of The Medium. I see a lot of claims that Bloober blames the victim instead of the oppressor, and I find those claims ridiculous.
    As for the technical side, Bloober is a very competent dev. Their games look genuinely good and they have a lot of experience with Unreal, which is what the remake will be running on. Everything I've seen so far tells me that Bloober cares about SH2 and honestly probably more than Konami does

    I think fans are seriously way too hateful, I really do think Bloober is working REALLY hard to get the best product they can, but these rabid fans with their unwillingness to change... the resident evil remakes all have different gameplays from the versions theyre based off... why should sh2r have the same gameplay? it looks a bit janky, but i thought that's what you guys liked about the og sh2, the combat was janky uncomfy, weird, etc... and dont come at me saying that sh2 wasnt about combat, there was a whole ass combat focused trailer back when the og sh2 was being promoted... sh HAS combat. All I have to say is just stfu, and wait for the final result. Unlike ascension, bloober HAS the passion for this series since the studio's creation. Also remember that Konami isn't exactly the best employer, so IF youre gonna get angry at someone, get angry at konami, not the devs who've been working nonstop to cater to all of ya'lls bs, while also trying to cater to konami's bs.

      The Resident Evil ones were good, well other than 3 idk what they were smoking when they threw that together. And also the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot remakes were goated, I think it’s been shown multiple times that remakes can be good I just think it’s really hard to remake something like Silent Hill and still keep the same feel of the original. Funny enough I think the silent hill games really benefited from being on old hardware from a gameplay perspective. Remakes themselves are fine but when you try to remake a game like Silent Hill where the whole game is kind of built around the jankiness of being on old hardware and it adds to the atmosphere then it’s just a bad idea from the start.
