The large is definitely a better option. I got it for my girl going into kindergarten and it was roomy enough to fit her lunch bag and sweaters/jacket. She had a hard time putting things in order with a small. The straps on the large help it stay in place on her.

My daughter is 45 inches and going into kindergarten. I got the large and it was way to big for her so I ended up having to get her a small. I kept the large because she will grow into it and it’s Disney princesses so she won’t out grow princess for a while. She loves how the small fits as well and can’t stand the large🤣You could do the same for your son where you just hang onto the large.I think the small is good for Kindergarten and 1st grade. Second grade is a good time to buy a large.My 9 year old who is going into 4th and is 54 inches got a large yoda style that fits him wonderfully!
