      Thanks Bill!!! I do think of my model shop as just another big ol' diorama that needs to be worked on like every other diorama I build. I have a vision for it and it's one of those life long projects that will continue to be built. Thanks for commenting and I hope you have a great Sunday!!! Take care, Bill

    I'm only 15 minutes into the video but darn am I gobsmacked. That is such a well thought out shop and the office is stunning. I keep pausing and checking out all the models and bits and bobs on the wall, like the lamp in the top corner of your office! I feel teleported back to when I was a kid looking through the Where's Waldo books and always finding something new whenever I looked throught them. Thank you for this and wishing you and your family a happy new year!

    Hi Bill. Catching this on Sunday afternoon.
    You've really got a nice shop. Sectioned off for different applications. Great idea.
    I inherited my grandfather's woodworking table. It's older than I am by several years. The table is super heavy. The cabinet underneath was put together without screws or nails. Hide glue is what I remember my dad saying it was. However, when he built it, he didn't support the middle and after ages it began to sag. I had no idea how to fix it and took it to a carpenter shop. Came back looking pretty good but with more nails and screws than you could shake a stick at. It didn't last after a few more years. The top is wht I think caused it to be heavy. It's got the cast iron under the table vices. One length ways on one end and the other width ways on the other. I'm seriously looking for a home for it. I couldn't possibly move anymore. Barely could when I was younger. Great video Bill. Thanks for the tour.

      Thanks Scott!!! That top of your grandfathers bench sounds amazing!!! I really love shops and have some amazing memories from living next to an abandoned motor hotel, and there was a barn that had tons of tools just laying around. We never took them as it was haunted, and that would of course curse you, so we left them there, but I would go in there and check them out and wondered what all these have iron tools were used for. Thanks for the memory Sir, and I hope you have a great New Year!!! Take care Bill

    I came across your channel while watching scratch building techniques and finally came across someone who has similar interests as myself. Your shop is what my ideal shop would be like. Woodworking, model building, and diorama building are my interests as well. Many similarities I see that parallel me, such as having a cat, veteran, interesting mechanical pieces, books, etc. I definitely subscribed to your channel as I look for the inspiration to achieve a shop of my own where I can create and build as you do.

      Hi Ryan, Its great to meet you!!! Thats so cool that we have the same interests! I'd love to know where you are in the journey. I worked in half of our garage for 16 years and I think that experience really had a big impact on what I built and how I learned to build things. My wife always wanted the car in the garage, so it was pretty challenging sometimes in a small space, but it worked. I also remember taking the car out for a short drive so it could add some heat to the garage because I only had a little radiant heater and used to work in the garage in the winter. I'm excited to hear about your projects and you are more than welcome to ask anything about the shop, or building, or materials, or whatever!!! Thanks again and I hope you have an amazing 2025!!!! Take Care, Bill

      Thank You So Much!!! It's such a fun place to come into each morning, and I hope some of it inspires you in your own shop!!! I definitely love looking at other peoples shops as I think there are some things that we all share, and lots of times other folks come up with a great way to solve a common "shop" problem. I also see the entire shop as a project. I build all of my projects, to include my dioramas, as displays for my shop. I love the rooms in movies that are a living space, as well as a shop or laboratory, like Sherlock Holmes, or the Time Machine. These have such a great feel to them with all the arcane devices of unknown use, objects that seem out of place anywhere but in that room, curiosities, all those things that make those scenes so interesting are the same things I want to have in my shop, so I try to build them. I am so glad you found my channel, I love doing this and hope I have fun things that inspire you for your own shop, the way other people have inspired me. Thank you again and I hope you have a wonderful 2025!!!! Take Care, Bill

    I am so glad to see that you've realized your dreams...as for me, I lament my circumstances...
    Like you, I'm a skilled craftsman/artist. Ten years ago, I began building my perfect shop. About 1/3 the way through construction, I was injured. Now the post and beam framework sit incomplete. What remains are my extensive collection of precision tools. Tools that lie idle. As you can guess, writing this was cathartic.

      I'm so sorry to hear it!!! Have you lost all mobility? I've thought many times about not being able to do these things. I'm a very active person and the last thing I want to do is sit, I hope you have retained some ability to create. Have you tried writing? Thats where I figured I would go if incapacitated. My best friend lost his sight a few years ago in his late 50's and it really made me think about these things as we are the same age, (same year and month). I do hope you are otherwise well and 2025 brings opportunities for you!!! Take Care, Bill

      Thank you very much!!! I also love to show peoples work on my livestream and if you would like to show some of your work, I'd love to showcase it. I know most of my projects have at least one story behind them, and I would love to see something you did and hear something about how it was created. One of the things I enjoy is looking at old things I've done years ago, and all sorts of things come back that I didn't remember at first glance, so if you have anything you would like to share, I know other people would enjoy hearing about it. Thanks again for commenting, I do this as my primary job these days so I am always here and love corresponding with people. My Father was an artist. I only saw him paint a couple times growing up, but he could paint and draw comparable to anyone ive seen. When I was 8 our garage was broken into and all his paints and things were stolen, and he never painted again. My father never lived a day of that dream, and that's something thats really stuck with me since. if you have something to get out, I'd sure like to help in some small way by showing your work on my livestream. just a thought, not trying to be a pain, but wanted you to know the opportunity is there. All my best for 2025!!! Bill

The great thing is I still get to do some smaller woodworking projects and with the dioramas and building scale wood details, it's really challenging just like full size woodworking. I also found that some of the doll house furniture is well beyond my skill level, so thats a very exciting challenge for the future. I hope you have great 2025!!! Take Care, Bill

    You have an amazing workshop so well-organized and impressive! Your models and dioramas are absolutely stunning and incredibly inspiring. I must admit, I’m a bit jealous (in the best way possible). My hobby workspace is just a small room in my apartment, with paper-thin walls, so everything has to be done by hand no power tools for me. But I hope that one day, I can have a workshop as beautiful as yours. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you in the future!

    • @ScaleModelCraft
      @ScaleModelCraft  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you so much!!! And I hope you achieve that shop someday, as I'm evidence it's possible!!! I also started in our apartment, it was a small utility closet on a very small deck, meant for chairs and possibly a BBQ Grill, but was too small for our BBQ, so I put in a small piece of plywood shelving for my bench, and a used bar stool, (from an actual Bar) for a place to sit. It was cold and hot as it had no heat or insulation, but it was a place I could go and build things. It's that kind of thing that I think makes for a better shop later. Those struggles were very frustrating at times, but it all led to a shop that I truly love to be in every day. I am hoping for your shop someday now too, so I think that will help somewhat in the universes plan!!! All the best and I look forward to hearing from you in the future!!! Take Care and Happy New Year!!! Bill

    Lovely!
    What are the dimensions of the building? Ceiling height? Any plumbing - you're going to need that you g forward, dribble takes on a new meaning...
    I have a 24' x 24' - 6" with 10' ceiling still under the roof of my home but completely sealed from it, has separate heat, A/C and water. After 3 years of retirement ( I'm 63 ) I've come to the decision of installing a urinal, I'm a former Kohler Plumbing fixture employee so, its a gift, can't wait. Like you, I mostly build models over woodworking - we are both truly blessed!

    • @ScaleModelCraft
      @ScaleModelCraft  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thats Fantastic Steven!!! It's just one of those things thats hard to explain if you don't have a shop, it is a transformative thing for a builder!!! The shop is 20 x 32 with 10 ft ceilings, (my father in law suggested that and boy am I thankful!!!) and I did a steeper roof pitch for storage above. The shop is 20 feet out the garage door, heated and a separate 100amp panel with 220 going to all the larger equipment. I didn't do plumbing, when I went through permitting, it would have required a new septic tank, as the house has 2.5 baths already. (Washington State REALLY likes taxes, fee's, and regulations...) We had it built by a local home builder, and as clever as I think I might be, he definitely did a much better job than I could have ever done. Originally I thought I would build it all myself... I love the idea of a urinal, and your friends at Kohler definitely have the perfect gift for you. When I expand, (Yep, I do have that in the future...) I want to add a bathroom and a separate finishing and storage area, so thats when I think we can do it. I'd love to see pictures of your shop, I do a livestream on Fridays and love to show off other folks work and workspaces!!! Thanks again for the great comment and questions, I hope you have a great New Year!!! Take Care, Bill

    I especially like the scaled down work bench. Do you have drawings of that bench?

    • @ScaleModelCraft
      @ScaleModelCraft  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank You!! I don't have any drawings, I typically build without them, which leads to lots of head scratching, and waste.... but it's just how I build. I used Makore wood to build it, my first time using that wood and maybe my last. It's a great color, mills well, but very hard and a little brittle. The corners have small chips because it will fracture instead of compress when impacted. It works great as a riser on my other benches for work so I don't have to bend as much, so I definitely love having it, I would just build it out of European Beech like my full sized bench if I had to do it again. I hope you have a wonderful 2025!!!

    Hello, I have been wondering what you use to finish your walnutwood?

    • @ScaleModelCraft
      @ScaleModelCraft  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hello, thanks for the question. I typically like oil finishes, but I use wipe on poly for Walnut, and it gives a fantastic finish. I progressively sand 150, 180, 220, then apply a thinned (w/mineral spirits) coat of Watco wipe-on poly Satin. I do a minimum of 3 coats, and have done 6 depending on surface or underside. after the second coat, I use 320 sandpaper to nock down any fibers, then do a wipe with a tack cloth, or my preferred method is a slightly damp t-shirt with mineral spirits. Not a lot as you can pull up prior coats, just enough to get the dust. I do that between each successive coat. After thats done, I like to add a hard wax coat, but thats not necessary, but it does add a very nice feel to the surface. I hope thats helpful and if you have other questions please ask. I'm also always looking to speak to folks about woodworking/diorama building so ask away and maybe we can even have you on one of my live shows. I think woodworking is a wonderful skill for anyone, and something you can always learn something new. Thanks again and I hope you have a fantastic New Year!!! Take care, Bill

      No joke, I practically do!!! Mrs. MC and I both work from home, so I'm out here all day and she works in the house. It's such a great place to just think up neat stuff, then build it!!! Thanks for commenting and I hope you have a fun place to create!!! Take care, Bill

    Question ! Why do you have a Beseler Photo Enlarger in your Workshop ? lol That belongs in a DARKROOM like mine are : )

    • @ScaleModelCraft
      @ScaleModelCraft  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Isn't that a beautiful enlarger?! It's really a fixture at this point looking for a better place to sit. My father was a photographer in his younger days, and it's more of a reminder of him than my own passions these days, but I do have plenty of time in a dark room. My family had a printing shop in the 70's for a few years until it went belly up, and I was the youngest, so I was in charge of the dark room exposing and developing plates for the presses, as well as all the copy for printing layup. It was the only air-conditioned room in the small building so I pretty much stayed in there all the time and ran a huge floor sized enlarger. I do have a distant idea of a darkroom, I just always liked the developing process, (I remember the smell of the chemicals right now as I write this) and as a kid in the 5th grade, I felt like this is a cool thing to be doing. Thanks very much for your comment, and the great memories it brings back. I'd love to see any pictures of your darkroom, as well as your pictures. I've always had a sincere appreciation for photographs as an art form, and would love to show some of your work on my livestream if you're interested. I think playing with light and shadows these days in my diorama building is greatly enhanced by my time with B&W photography, which is what my Dad did primarily. Thanks again and I hope you have a great New Year!!! Take Care, Bill

      Hey
      Thanks for the Nice Reply !
      I figured that enlarger was there for a reason
      😊
      I too was an avid photographer with a Passion for Film processing and Development. My darkroom was beautiful room to be in! Back in the 1990s i spent " days" and long evenings in there. TIME stood still and I was in Heaven lol
      But that all ended when Digital tech emerged and took over the industry SADLY I must say ....
      I turned to digital and never really went back to hand processing again..... I do still think of returning to it, but i am near 80 , so my time anymore is focused on more important things of daily life. You never Know however !!😉
      One day i may creep back in the Gem in my basement, even if its simply to reminescent !
      I love your shop and Video too ! My Model shop ,is much like yours ,decades of projects everywhere !
      And still going On
      Take great Care , keep plugging along , the happiness it brings is like none other , I certainly Understand .
      Btw, my CAT is Always with me in my Shop Too !
      Enjoy a Very Happy and Healthy New Year
      With many more to come !!

      Thanks Very Much Jackson!!! I'm so glad you found my channel and I hope you like some of my other videos. Shop's are such a special place, and I hope other people can find these immersive activities like we did. I think there's a lot to be said for slowing down and enjoying the experience instead of racing to the result. If you do feel inspired I'd love to see what you build. For that matter, I love to show off other peoples work on my livestream on Fridays, so if you have any interest in that, I would love to showcase some of your projects. Just something to keep in mind if the mood strikes you.
      Ghost is a stray that we adopted almost 2 years ago from the woods behind our house, and he's really turning into a constant companion. Oscar was my shop cat for 20 years, but he passed last year in March, so you will see him in my older videos. He was the complete shop pro and ran this place like a little general. Oscar was very vocal and would tell my wife and I if something wasn't right, (Food, Water, fluff my bed, etc...). I have no doubt Ghost will follow Oscars example.
      Thanks again for your comments, and I hope yo hear from you again.
      Take care, Bill

    Nice shop. You still build plastic ? I built plastic for years reached my goals and then went 100% into wooden ships and balsa free fight planes. Its all a great hobby.

      I sure do, I love building both plastic and wood models, but these days I'm trying to build stories into my dioramas and finding it very challenging. I hope you have a great New Year!!!

    I'm about 10 minutes into the tour , it looks like a great shop however I'm seasick from you swinging the camera around. Slow down dude! I'll have to try watching at half speed!

      Darn it Dave, I'm really sorry about that!!! My father in law said the same thing... I hope you get through it, if there is anything you want to see specifically, I can do it in a short or another video so hang in there and tell me what you think at the end. I hope you have a great 2025!!! Bill

      Hi John, I hear ya and agree, my filming skills have a lot to be desired. I'm taking your cue, (other great comments also... I really botched some parts) and I'll film some more of the shop as I discuss Storytelling in Dioramas. Thanks again for the great feedback!!! Take care, Bill
