Little Jimmy Scott has died. He was one of the finest male jazz singers who ever drew a breath. And 99.5% of Americans living today have never heard of him. He was noted for his exquisite ballad work. Can you imagine having this voice, this talent, this passion, and then having to work as a hospital orderly and elevator operator because you can’t make a living in the music business? This was Scott’s situation in the 1960s. He had a professional rebirth in the 1990s, but never really got his due. But for many jazz fans, jazz musicians, and particularly jazz vocalists (like Billie Holiday), Scott was simply the best.
Tonight, Scott is singing once again with Lionel Hampton. They’re the featured act at the Cloud Nine Jump & Jive Club. Billie and Nat King Cole are front row and center. And a third of the way into My Foolish Heart, they’re crying their eyes out.
    RIP Jimmy.

How beautifully put...I had the pleasure of meeting this kind spirited talent. I found his comeback album in the waste can at the radio station where I worked at the time. asked one of the older jocks at the station if he had ever heard of Jimmy. He quickly responded by saying..."You mean Little Jimmy Scott?"...he went on to tell me about Jimmy's beginnings and what a hard time he had in the business...I was fascinated by Jimmy's voice and his story. I set up an interview not knowing if I'd be successful, but I was...and he was delighted to be interviewed. He said I was the first to call for an interview since the come-back album was out. Man, I can't tell you what a treat that was and then to meet him later on before he passed. He was the real deal. I still have the interview...will cherish it always.

Thanks for sharing stephen, 'I've been a passionate jazz fan & jazz club enthusiast for many decades but, as you mention I was One of those who didn't come across Little Jimmy Scott until the early 90's & immediately was Smitten by Jimmy's passion, soul, depth & delivery & I probably heard him initially back then by a DJ on the LA/Long Beach Ca- Jazz Station.. I as well have found myself in tears- physically & emotionally since then listening to 'Jimmy literally climb inside & color these lush gorgeous standard/ballads!........ Thanks again for sharing about Little Jimmy Scott ..........

The first time I saw Jimmy Scott, he was traveling and singing with Lionel Hampton. My mother had taken me to the Million Dollar theater on 3rd & Broadway, Los Angeles to see a live show 1950. He sang the song 'Everybody's Somebody's Fool' I was 8yrs old but his voice brought me to the edge of my seat with elbows resting on the seat in front of me.

This is such a great song and it's the first time I've listened to Jimmie sing it. He knew something about the heart and the emotions. Singing was the way he told us about those rare and difficult things.
