Check out the Ancient World podcast. Obviously, it has none of the amazing art that Kings and Generals have (and it can help a lot with all these ancient mesopotamian names) but it is very in-depth, starts with the earliest history of the first cities in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, China, Minoan Crete, southern America (there was a civilisation as old as these others although then disappeared) and the British Isles and continues mostly with Egypt, Mesopotamia, China and to a lesser degree India (fewer written sources) and Crete/Greece all the way to the 3rd century BC (I think, I'm still at the 9th or so episode, but that was the original plan, I think it's now went beyond that). The narration is very good too.

Actually - those particular mythological accounts of Sargon are based on accounts from Nineveh 1500 years after Sargon was alive. They were released as part of historical archeology in 1870 from ancient Nineveh.
Historically the accounts of Moses are actually older than these Nineveh accounts of Sargon.

Gorgeous animation brings to life a time and place that doesn't get much focus in history classes in the west, for various reasons. But I've always gravitated toward it. There are only so many cradles of civilization, after all, the originators of life as we know it. Spot on with the facts as well. If I were a history teacher I would definitely show clips from these videos as aides.

I very much appreciate this summation - I'm working my way through the Great Courses series "Between the Rivers" and have long been fascinated with these most ancient peoples. It appears that the main thing the Akkadians were missing was a mythos that united the people, so that instead of feeling oppressed, they would feel a part of the deeds of the empire.
I also wish that the origin myth of Sargon were complete. At the moment, it's sort of an ancient version of:
1 - Be raised in exile
    2 - Be exiled again
    3 - ???
4 - Conquer the land between the rivers (profit!)

5:00 the ritual of washing the royal weapons into the see , was an hint of a folktale or myth very important in the region ( and so much popular that we can recognize later greek legends) : the tale is the one of Baal becoming king of the gods after defeating his rivals Yam god of seas and Mot god of hell, when a mesopotamian king did this ritual it was like telling to everybody : "i defeated all kings , now i'm the king of kings as Baal is king of gods".and not a borders' thing.

@@JeremiahAranezfrom what I know, chariots would be manned by a driver and a bowman or spearman, it’s like a highly mobile unit in ancient times. I don’t think they rode horses at this time of history either so this was what they’d do instead. And I don’t think it was until later that they added blades that would spin with the wheels as the chariot moved but it could’ve been an innovation at this time for all I know. If the chariot had blades on the wheels I’m pretty sure it was then used to break the enemy formations and create chaos in their ranks ? I’m no expert tho

ALN Alioshax true , but I think the next episode will be the last one about Sumerian civilization because after the Third dynasty of Ur there will be a huge cultural invasion from Aramaic nomadic people , and Elamites will attack Sumer and destroy it , making them completely under Amorites power and would later become amortized . However some of them will go deeply to the Marshes of Southern Mesopotamia and maintain their life style until this very day , they still would forget about their language and religion and convert to other cultures .

This era of history is interesting as to even get a basic idea of what happened intense arecheology was needed. In contrast, the basics about the Greeks and Romans were in the collective memory of educated people constantly after they declined. For example, we didn’t need to escalate to find out about the Iliad, but we didn’t discover Gilgamesh until the 1800s AD.
That goes to show how much older the Mesopotamian civilizations are compared to the Romans. Crazy

Overall, a fairly decent video. I'd like to point out that there is a Sargon stele and a Manishtushu stele which give some fascinating insight into just who the akkadians were fighting and making deals with.
The former is interesting as it depicts sargon's subjugation of the sumerians (from hair styles). These fragments are rarely talked about and I find them very interesting from the standpoint that Sargon was trying to portray himself as a subjuator rather than a liberator. It's interesting to note that his successors suffered from rebellions against Akkadian hegemony which could have been averted if he had better PR.
The later is a land grant document. It shows how the Akkadian kings redistributed lands to high officials as essentially bribes. Considering that both Rimush and Manishtushu were killed in palace coups we can infer that the state of akkadian court politics was volitile and cloaked in intrigue. Very unstable.
There is also the rimush stele which is interesting because it shows both sumerians and akkadians in subjugation. It's like Rimush just threw his hands in the air and said, "imma smite all yall SOBs".
