no matter how many times i hear a shins song i hear it an all new way, a brand new time.. the meaning, the melody, the introspection.

Here are the ACTUAL lyrics, if anyone even comes here anymore, or ever will again. I’ve left a signpost if you do, with the correct directions written on it, to help you find your way,
    Foals in winter coats,
    White girls of the North,
File past: one, five and one,
    They are the fabled lambs,
    Of Sunday ham,
    Thee H.S. norm.
And they can float above the grass,
    In circles if they tried,
A latent power I know they hide,
    To keep some hope alive,
That a girl like I could ever try,
    Could ever try
So we just skirt the hallway sides,
    A phantom and a fly,
Follow the lines and wonder why
    There's no connection.
    A week of rolling eyes,
And cheap shots from the tribe,
And we're off to Nemarcas' porch again,
Another afternoon with the goat head tunes,
    And pill fed booze.
We wandered through her mama's house,
And the milk from the window lights,
    Family portraits circa ninety-five,
    This is that foreign land,
    With the sprayed on tans,
    And it all feels fine,
    Be it silk or slime.
So, when they tap our Monday heads,
Two zombies walk in our stead.
This town seems hardly worth the time.
And we'll no longer memorize or rhyme,
Too far along in our climb,
Stepping over what now towers to the sky,
    With no connection.
So, when they tap our Sunday heads,
Two zombies walk in our stead.
This town seems hardly worth the time.
And we'll no longer memorize or rhyme,
Too far along in our crime,
Stepping over what now towers to the sky,
    With no connection.

I think all your corrections are right, but I do REALLY hear “to zombie-walk in our stead”. I can’t hear zombie as plural, there’s no “S” sound in the studio recording or in any live performances I’ve heard. It’s interesting because the Spotify lyrics say “two zombies walk in our stead” but Apple Music says “to zombie-walk in our stead”.

@@123unknownsoldier126 - Yes to 'zombie-walk in our stead' - also, I hear 'pilfered booze' which makes more sense than 'pill-fed booze'

Have you never listened to The Shins before?
Nothing they write generally tells a story. They're pretty much tone poems, sets of phrases that evoke a tone. At least that's what I think since I can never make any sense of their songs.
Its funny how much you can love a band's sound but still have no clue what they're saying or trying to say.

You have a few errors. Here are the correct lyrics. :)
    Foals in winter coats,
    White girls of the North,
Fire past one, five and one
They are the fabled lambs of Sunday ham,
    The EHS norm
And they can float above the grass,
    In circles if they tried,
A latent power I know they hide,
    To keep some hope alive,
    That a girl like I'm
    Could ever try,
    Could ever try.
So we just skirt the hallway sides,
    A phantom and a fly,
Follow the lines and wonder why
    There's no connection.
    A week of rolling eyes,
And cheap shots from the trite,
And we're off to Nemarca's porch again,
Another afternoon of the goat head tunes,
    And pilfered booze.
We wander through her mama's house,
And the milk from the window lights,
    Family portrait circa ninety-five,
    This is that foreign land,
    With the sprayed on tans,
    And it all feels fine,
    Be it silk or slime,
So, when they tap our Monday heads,
Two zombie walk in our stead,
This town seems hardly worth the time,
And we'll no longer memorize or rhyme,
Too far along in our crime/climb?
Stepping over what now towers to the sky,

Two zombie walk in our stead,
This town seems hardly worth the time,

These are what I call first acid trip lyrics!!
Wonderfully juxtaposed and multi dimensional use of the language!
    Be careful however-
    It only happens once-
    By the next trip
The brains get scrambled into a jumbled mash of meaninglessness-
    Never to return!

  • @MrNickelCobalt
    @MrNickelCobalt 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Anyone else wonder why James Mercer writes as a female sometimes? For example, in this song he says "a girl like I". In New Slang, the lyrics in the chorus that goes "I'd a danced like the king of the eyesores" turns into "I'd a danced like the queen of the eyesores" in the final chorus. It's always boggled me.

    • @threeletteragent
      @threeletteragent 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

MrNickelCobalt I think in New Slang, that last chorus is from the perspective of the girl (the story is about a guy looking back and regretting his lack of action regarding a romantic interest), showing that she was also attracted and waiting for the other one to make the first move. In this song, I think he is simply talking about a girl that is similar to him, not that he is also a girl.

Wrong, a lot of their songs he wrote have some stuff to do with him or other events in his life, they are not just "Catchy Songs" I think you should maybe watch an interview with James Mercer, maybe if you hear him talk about some of the songs that might just understand them a bit more. The 98.7 with Kennedy was good.
