சங்கீத உலகில் சரித்திரம் படைத்த சாதனை நாயகன் மதுரை சோமு அவர்களின் சரித்திர ம்.. ஆஹா... என்ன ஒரு அருமை அளவிலாத சுவை அள்ளி வழங்கி ய லலித ராம் அவர்களுக்கு நெஞ்சம் நிறைந்த பாராட்டு க்கள். ஏரி காத்த ராமர் கோவிலில் நான் எழுதி ய தேனினும் இனியது ராம நாமம் அரங்கில் உடனே பாடி. இந்த பாடலை நான் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளவா என்று குழந்தை போல கேட்டு வாங்கி கொண்டதை என்னால் இந்த நேரத்தில் என்னால் மறக்கமுடியவில்லை எவ்வளவு பெரிய கலை ஞர்.... காலம் உள்ள வரை திரு சோமு அவர்களின் புகழ் நிலைத்திருக்கும் சந்தேகமில்லை

I remember an incident in Bangalore Ganapati secs mandal I in Basavanagudi. One elderly person asked him for Geetharthamu at the end of the concert. Time 1.30 AM. He sang the song after thillana just for one persons wish
I have listened to his soulful rendition of Ninaikkadha Neramillai Muruga so many times! I lost count! Also, Azhagiya Mayil Meedhu Aadiva Muruga

Very great presentation. My father Pudukottai Shri. Mahadeva Iyer was regular accompanist. Whenever there was a concert in Trichy, he used to dine at our house and he had the same preference of menu every time. I started recollecting many such incidents. Thanks for bringing him back to memory.

Happened to see the programme just now. A classic performer, 👌 a man of the mass who entertained 😆 for hours together those days has been honoured 🎖 and I am immensely grateful to the organizers who arranged this tribute.

Madurai Somu, my Grandfather and the founder of Modern Restaurant in Madurai were all friends, before my GrandFather went and joined the military to fight in the world war 2. They used to sing together, staying near Meenakshi Amman temple, and used to recollect how loud Somu used to be, disturbing neighbors.

It's true that he is bent upon pleasing rasikas . In 1980s we used to sit for hours and listen. He has sung some of my lyrics. Whenever he has programme in and around Tuticorin he will write to me. I have never missed them . I too share the same feeling that the speaker expressed in conclusion. We have to popularize his music.

In those days in 40s 50s and 60s castetism had not shown its ugly head in Carnatic music. That is why lot of eminent vidwans - Ariyakudi GNB had non-brahmin stalwarts - Palani Subbudu C S Murugabhoopathy Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai Dwaram Venkataswami Naidi and others as their accompanists and vice versa. Madurai Somu is a victim of brahmin chaunism in Music Academy. It is not loss to him but to Academy and carnatic music. Eminent Critic Subbudu fought against the caste bias of Music Academy in 80s and 90s.

Really it is a historical event in the morning sessions of Music Academy to offer tribute to the legend Madurai Somu. A very good, analitical, profound and a critical study has been made by Mr. Lalitharam on the great musician. My all appreciation to Lalitharam and blessings to this young critic to continue his service as a critic and writer. I had Sri. Somu's lot of affection and blessings during my early life.

Thanks for mentioning "Enna Kavi " anayampatti adi sesha iyer krithi. He has sung many krithis like "saradambike, muruganai ninaindurugi, amudham venduma and many more all composed by anayampatti adi sesha iyer. Somu sir s signature is something special. Lot of old memories since 71 so excited. Many krithis sent to somu sir also with me which I had a glance after seeing the event. Thanks Lalitha ram for your tireless efforts
As far as the pronounciation of Late Somu in ATUKARADANI PALKA it is the correct pronounciation of the word. It means ATU (as the way/in the way) KARADANI(it is not feasible /just to go that way)PALKA(to admonish) NEEKU ABHIMANAMU LEKAPOYENA (do not you have love towards me?)
Dr Sowmya is noted for her mispronounciation of lyrics generally. So she commented on Sri Somu's pronounciation. Hope she reads this comment here and then corrects herself.

so Somu sir was right in pronouncing the word and Sowmyagaru is wrong. ofcourse for the audience who do not know Telugu,they will appreciate that, but for people like me who are serious practitioners of Telugu and Sanskrit it SOUNDS JARRING.
Pronunciation is taken for a ride in Tamil Nadu.The beautiful Telugu is literally murdered.
Chakkani raja margamu undaga( when there is a lovely royal path) is pronounced as saakani raja. God save our music and Sundaramaina Telugu basha.
Carnatic music as the name suggests was born in Karnataka, the Bala paata devised by pitamaha Shri purandaradasa. We are thankful it got patronage in Tamilnadu, and later ruled by the Sabhas of Madras. ಅ ಸಂಗೀತ ನಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರದು, ಇವರ ಅಪ್ಪನಮನೇ ಗಂಟಲ್ಲಾ
Lot of programmes he performed in temples but I remember the routine navarayhri Isai vizha at trichy akilandeswari temple during 70s and 80s were the best I ever heard
His progusually starts at 10 pm and ends only next morning 5 am

Great. You should also visit Ramanavami celebration in Bangalore. Almost all the legends of Carnatic music have sang there.

Either Veeraswamy or Kuppuswamy lived in Nachiarkoil or Kodavasal never respected Sangeetha Kalanidhi award or Music Academy.

He was sidelined only because he was not a Brahmin. The Sabhas have to regret for this crime which they have deliberately perpetrated not on Somu by on the Carnatic music itself
Wrong . I think Lalgudi a Brahmin also not awarded Sangeetha Kalanidhi . There will be 50% of Kalanidhi are , May be NB .
I am closely associated with Lalgudi family. I am a disciple of Lalgudi Smt Padmavathi Ananthagopalan, who is one of the sisters of LGJ. But the context here is the Great Somu, who did not hail from any grand Musical family, but touched the epic.

Greatest musician ever. I listened to Madurai Somu concert in Thanjavur once. He sang thrilling Thodi alapana followed by unbelievableThaye Yashoda. I have never listened to Thaye yosoda like the one he sang on that day. It was mind blowing. How many sangatis. It was like Varsham. Super Vidwan.
This guy neither knows English nor Tamil. He claims expertise in Tamil Carnatic music but cannot speak one sentence without mixing malpronounced English words.
