There are 2 types of fireman's axes, the 4th one you showed is known as a "Pick Head" axe. The Pick head is generally use by the fire fighter going to the roof. The pick allows them to put a hole in the roof to check for smoke/fire. It can also be driven into the roof and left with the handle lying down. This makes a good foothold or step for the user to use on a steep roof. The important use is, if the fire fighter does lose their ability to stand and slides down the roof, they can drive the pick end into the roof and stop themselves. The other type is a "Flat Head" axe which is just that. It gives the user a way to drive other tools into place. It is paired with a "Halligan Tool" and called the "Irons", and used for forcible entry. Of course both types can be used to chop.

Oh and btw, the rafter I got is a Vulcan Kelly axe true temper (Vulcan on one side with a “homestead” cabin” ) and true temper Kelly works, on the other….it has serious pitting but NO rust and a chip in the pole (which I have filed and sanded out as you did in your previous video). I am so stoked for This video! I am apologizing ahead of Time for all the “ohhhing” and “ahhhing” I’ll be doing LOL. I am in aww and if you have any plumb nattys you wanna sell as is? Or trade? LMK!

I love that head around 26:30 I think it may be what American Axe and Tool called a heavy poll Ohio which can be found in their online pdf catalogues. I also think they had a large amount of paper label axes that were not stamped which would back that up more. I have a couple different plumb Connie’s or a nice 4lb true temper Kelly handmade db among couple hundred others if you wanted to work out a trade for it.

I noticed when guys see what TH-camrs like or collect they go after the same axes and thus raising the price on certain patterns, but it’s normally temporary then those prices go back down, and other patterns go way up
There's definitely a lot of truth to this. Especially when large channels talk about a specific pattern. For a while Hudson bays were crazy expensive regardless of the maker. From what I've noticed is some patterns seem to hold their price higher regardless of the market. But you are right. There are definitely fads within the collecting community and the prices fluctuate according. I collect a little bit of everything so hopefully I stay ahead of the trends and not go broke collecting haha

Thanks Joey! I Don't want to give the wrong impression. The whole shop is not nearly as clean and organized as the bench /French cleat wall haha. I actually need to work on some larger storage options for the hung axes. I may end up making a video about it when I do. The oil is M-Pro 7 gun oil. I use it on my guns and had it in the shop. I do like how it doesn't become gummy and dosent evaporate off like wd40. But it doesn't smell great so be warned if you pick some up haha
Nice collection! I like them hung on wall for organization and viewing - it looks cool. The pegs theyre on seem very sturdy - what are they? I need to do something similar to hang some my loose heads for display.
Tanks chad! And the head rack is something I cooked up with scraps I had in the shop. What I used was some salvaged 3/4 (if I remember right) oak floor boards and steel tubing from a broken baby/pet gate. The tubing is steel and was painted white to start so I took the torch to it and then the wire wheel. Afterwards I just used a pipe cutter to section the longer tube's into 4.25 in sections (fits most heads nicely). The tubing is essential just thin walled 3/8in OD steel tubing. You can find it pretty cheap on Amazon too. I then just spaced out the holes 2in center to center and drilled them all with my drill press. I then just used a friction fit with the tubing into the holes and drove them in with a hammer. The board can then be mounted to a wall but in my case I mounted it on a French cleat system that I have set up behind my bench so the racks can actually be moved/removed easily. If there's enough interest maybe I'll make another storage rack for some more of my heads. There's always a need for more spots as the collection keeps growing haha.
