    Nice collection of boy's axes. Thanks for sharing. On the over strike Plumb, If its were mine, I'd look at it and feel it's unsafe to use it as is do to the handle damage, therefore a replacement handle would be my choice. On the double oval Craftsman, could an experiment in steaming the handle in an effort to straighten it be accomplished to save the vintage handle. Could be a fun learning experience too. just my two ideas, your choices, tho. Enjoy and have fun.

      I'm right there with you Dale. If I ever plan on using that plumb I'll definitely be swapping out the handle. But it may just stay a wall hanger as I've got others for use. For the craftsman, I do want to try steam bending and I will definitely try to save the handle. It will likely just get paired with a different head. Thanks for weighing in!!!!

    Nice heads man I love these kinds of videos to see what other people have in collection. I love that head around 26:30 I think it may be what American Axe and Tool called a heavy poll Ohio which can be found in their online pdf catalogues. I also think they had a large amount of paper label axes that were not stamped which would back that up more. I have a couple different plumb Connie’s or a nice 4lb true temper Kelly handmade db among couple hundred others if you wanted to work out a trade for it.

    Bro you've absolutely created a "Cadillac" of a axe there! Buyers of such things want the complete package. Yes w stearing wheel and tires. Sharpening and mask making are skills few have time for or often knowledge of. My vote sharp and shealthed. Excellant vid as always! You really should sell your handles separately also, if you have time?..guessing you dont as husband and father. :)

    • @Nsvens89
      @Nsvens89 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you!!! I really appreciate that. You make a good point about everyone not having the supplies to make a mask. I also lean towards it being a full package. I have considered selling some handles but am hesitant for a few reasons. Roughly shaping one up would not take that long if the buyer wanted to do the the final sanding and hang. I mostly have no idea what I would charge and if anyone would want it after the cost of shipping. It's certainly something I would consider though. I appreciate the input!!! Thank you!

    Love how this came out! Can you share your file and rasp setup? I see you use a red tang farriers rasp and Shinto rasp (along with a half round med cut rasp), etc, also what is the purpose of Blueing an axe? I mean besides it looks awesome as shit, does it preserve the axe as well? Thanks dude!

    • @Nsvens89
      @Nsvens89 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Mike! I appreciate the kind words. The tools I typically use for a hang may make for an interesting quick video. You are correct. I use a heller red tang farriers rasp for the heavy removal along with a corse narex cabinet makers rasp. Then I move to the shinto rasp. And the finer rasp was a Nicholson that I dropped years ago and the tang broke off. Thus the duct tape handle. It's still cutting strong though so I'll keep using it. For the bluing it does look cool for sure! But it also protects the head from rust. The bluing itself is a form of controlled rusting. Applying the bluing creates a protective oxide layer that is more resistant to deep rusting. It's not incredibly durable, but as the bluing wears off with use, a natural patina should form underneath.

    So I have 3 plumb rockaways. One is 3 lb, one 3.5lb, and a 4 lb. All three have the old plumb logo with the sharp corners on the rectangle. The 4lb has a small round touch mark opposite side of the logo and the 3 lb has a small square/diamond shaped one opposite side of logo. There are no weight stamps on any. Come to think of it none of my plumbs with old stamps have a weight marking.

    That Plumb rockaway has the same faded red I found on a old plumb cruiser i recently found. In mine the handle had been removed and just half heartedly placed a dry wood wedge. No sign of permabond. But you could tell the axe and handle been together along time. Do you think thats the original handle? Any sign of permabond? I know permabond wasnt used on the older one but curious. Thanks again for sharing your always great vids bro!

    • @Nsvens89
      @Nsvens89 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I appreciate the kind words!!!! I haven't really gotten a chance to check it super super close. The red makes me suspect it's an original handle and it's wedged also. No permabond. The hang isn't great as it looks like it was rehung at some point on the same handle. I plan in pulling it apart when I clean it up. I'm definitely curious to see if I find any traces of permabond in the eye. I don't think I've ever seen a permabond rockaway though. It could be that they stopped making them prior to using permabond. I'm definitely curious on the time line of each now.

When it comes to hand filing older axes the oxide layers "patina" can be exceedingly hard! On a number of old heads once I'm through that later it's a bit more manageable. I've tried usin some leather dye on handles but haven't had much luck. The color looks great but transfers to my hands still. Wood dye sounds like a better option. Cuts are never fun but definitely inevitable when playing with sharp stuff haha. Also why I'm using cut gloves in a bunch of my videos. I've been bitten a few times for sure.

    Ok so a little off topic on what this video deals with but I have an issue with some heads. Toe jam. How do you deal with it to make an axe more functional and aesthetically appealing. I have a nice Kelly Wood Slasher that has the toe jam. I've been reading " The Ax Book" by Dudley Cook and he gives some great insight, just wondering how you may do handle that. And I have been looking every where for that cast iron Defiance 199 utility knife. I swear I have it. If I cant find it in the next few, I've got something else for ya. Thanx.

    • @Nsvens89
      @Nsvens89 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey, I never mind off topic! It's all axe talk 👍 there are a few different options, and some are better than others, in my opinion, and are heavily dependent on how the bit is shaped. One option is drawing a new profile and grinding the bit back (providing you have enough good steel and you keep it cool). This option keeps the bit profile but not edge geometry. If you go this route, you widen the edge a bit unless you lay the grind down more on the cheeks. Another option is grinding the heel back right match the toe but it leaves the center of the bit protruding and looking a bit off. The 3rd is to just sharpen it in place and leave it. As the axe is used and sharpened over time the bit wears back and the toe jam lessens. If the toe isn't too bad i tend to go with the first option. It it's really bad I'll go option 3 option two can look alright on some patterns with rounded toes and heels like Michigan's. So short answer is it depends on the pattern and how bad the jam is👍👍 feel free to shoot me a pic on Instagram!
