Great tips, I'm a weightlifter and just decided to get into salsa classes for the cardio. I look even more awkward as a built guy dancing around but so far I'm loving it.
Guys to look natural dancing salsa, really the first and most important rule is to LISTEN to the music and actually ENJOY it. See where the music changes, gets more intense, starts the chorus, other percussion instruments join in, etc. You need to be sensitive to that, and to let your body flow with it. Otherwise, even with these tips, you will still end up looking mechanical. Many non-latino salsa students tend to become salsa-bots, and that ain't good. Learn to appreciate the music first.
It's a language thing. Spanish/Latin is more emotionally embracing. When people learn to convey the emotion of the situation creatively in their dance, and not just in their head, they can can can, and a cha, cha, cha :)
This video is very well done, it's much better compared to many others because it gives the necessary explanation of what is needed to correctly study the basic step, a fundamental technique which is, usually, not well teached. Who says it is too long doesn't care about beginners or doesn't know what salsa is.
This video is very useful for a person, who has already taken a beginners class in salsa. It´s very difficult to handle all the information at the beginning, but with a help with this information clip it does let the beginner understand more about dancing salsa. I like it very much! :)
This is the best salsa class you’ll ever have. It gives you, without the turning and twisting that others try to teach, the salsa moves as I’ve know them from the 80’s, when this dance became so popular.
I've been trying to figure out for months why my basic step doesn't look right...It was the arms!!! Great description about motion coming from the elbows...In just a few minutes, you made a big difference... Thanks Anthony!!
It's been such a pleasure to find addicted2salsa, I watch the videos everyday. Im a salsa lover since I was five years old. I know how to dance salsa, but I needed to know the technique by details, as Im focused to become a dance instructor. Anthony is great teaching, I have learned a lot from him. Just love your classes!
You have done an awesome job of explaining this! I salsa, cumbias, bachatas blah blah blah lol, and have for a long time here en las cruces. Took me a minute to get to the next level bc I didn’t have someone to lay it out how you do in this vid!! Thank you for helping everybody my friend!!
Freddy Ramos "Letting yourself go and enjoy with the music" means you can create any conversation you want with your partner. The salsa dance steps provide the vocabulary and "grammar rules" so you both can understand each other - otherwise if the lead only spoke English and their partner only understood French, it would be a very difficult romantic conversation.
Well said, Fred. I m a Shine the Beltbuckle person. But, that s only when I with my honey. I mix that with some on the 2 mambo steps and a few turns. This turn business is out of control and they dance like trained robots. They stick out on the floor like sore thumbs. However, it s all good. It keeps the salsa music alive and well.
+Addicted2Salsa hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to belly dance video try Renkarter Belly Dance Report(do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.
Anthony. You're simply the best. Ain't sure if it is reward for you, but noticing that random people got their style from you salsa club on the other side of the world must be satisfactory. Congrats, mate!
Moving the arms from the elbows, rather than the hands made an immediate difference in my styling. Also moving the feet past one another rather than in place also improved the look of my basic. All in less than 5 min!!!! Great tips...Thanks!!!
WOW!!! my husband says i have two left feet and i have to addmitt I DO!! this video really really helped me. Actually it was the instructor that helped me because first i learned the basic steps on his first video then leaned how to spice it up with the right arms movements and how far you should step out. Thank you Anthony!!
I got a bowl and poured some ice cream with sprinkles and I thought about listening to some hector acosta because feeling a bit of Spanish tonight, then I realized I don't know how to dance so I look up dance tutorials 101 or how to dance step 1 and then I see this salsa one and I'm like, oohh yeah dancing with the style. I click this video and eat my ice cream and as I go on eating my icecream , were 5min in to the video and I've already learned so much! Thanks my man, you're the man. Voy a comenzar a bailar para poder ir a mas fiestas con extra confidencia con estos pasos tan chevere
Congratulations for all the amazing work that you are doing Anthony...!! You've choosed yourself a great mission...!! ;-) With millions of viewers around the world you are the mother Teresa of Salsa...!!! Great explanations, and the patterns can really be applied at the club...! Keep it on, and many thanks...!!!
I love your videos. I am super white and have started dancing with my Ecuadorian friend's family at parties and whatnot. It's a blast and I'm usually a very 'stiff' person but want to loosen up and learn to relax more. I think I see more salsa and my Ecuadorian dance partner in my future!
I have a tutorial on how to incorporate the salsa step to hip hop and house. I hope my video is helpful. Let me know if you liked it. th-cam.com/video/_uV3K1h641U/w-d-xo.html
I agree with Frivillig. At first, it will be hard because it's out of your comfort zone but eventually, you will feel at ease and you will wish you have started earlier. that was my case. I was too nervous during my first few classes but now I'm at "intermediate 1" and I'm always impatiently waiting for my next class. I wish I have started 2 years ago, when I first had the idea but was too shy to do so
Big thanks :-). By the way - I love your website and it has been one of the most prominent sources of my improvement in salsa dancing - huge props for you! BTW, I'm also an engineer (well, almost ;-) ), although I do sth else professionially. Wow, I feel honored that you replied so fast to my question. Internet's awesome. I feel an almost tangible connection with one of my gurus (yup, you are one :-) ), even though your in the US and I'm in Poland :-). Great job, keep it up!
I learned to dance salsa music in this way. I just want to say (being respectful) the only way to look natural is to feel the music. It's listen to the music with the heart! Having the guaganco and the clave in the blood!
Thnx! I really needed help looking more natural on the dance floor. I saw that my friends were doing the step slightly differently than I was, and the second and third tips were just that!
The biggest problem newcomers to salsa dance have is when to step to the salsa music. Use a clave in your hand and beat it as you step, so your viewers learn to hear and step in time with the proper beat of instruments .This gives the dancer a better feel for the instruments in the music and the body follows in the rhythm. Good work.. keep dancing. Any video with shines/steps on 4 & 8 beats?
BrekOnTwo is a salsa timing. You can dance salsa on1, on2, on clave, on BrekOnTwo.. or on whatever you want.. if you know what you are doing. BrekOnTwo was invented by Eddie Torres, in new york.. I think in the early '70. The scope was to teach people used to dance on1; to dance on 2! That is an harder thing for a nordamerican or for an european. You move your first step (left) on 1, and the second step (right) on 2. Doing this your right feet is on the same place of a dancer that started on 2.

@bugtest The counts 4 and 8 are considered pauses in the steps. It is general convention to only count the numbers which actually have steps to them. We have a beginner video that explains the basics.
Kevin Rameau, 4 and 8 are rests. You can count 1,2,3, 5,6,7 or like I learned.. 123and567and....I like this video. One simple thing makes it great is the white shoes on the dark floor. Very easy to follow.
it's the same for women except you reverse the feet and direction of the step. The partner would step backward with the right on the 1 where he steps forward with the left, etc. The rest is identical and applies the same
Thanks for uploading this! The part about using arms is very helpful in teaching my male students, who wonder why they can't look like I do when dancing!
Amazing! Thank you so much. The first video I found to explain why my movement looked awkward to me. When I counted 1 (guy) my left shoulder went forward and it should have been the opposite. You look so smooth when you move, makes me look like a robot actually :-D
Thanks to you I learned this basic steps jaja, it was confusing for me to move my hand and feet correctly but I did it and I'm putting it to practice soon, thanks for your video =)
ouh super cool - I'm salsa dancer turned to kizomba - now watching this video actaully -there are still a lot of similarities in the way of good stepping in salsa. It took so much time to fix that bouncing beginner effect. But totally worth it :) Good tips!
We're playing Smooth by Santana in my alternative strings class in school and we need to find a salsa or tango step to do while were playing our instruments this'll be fun

Excellent description! Thank you. As a belly dancer, I keep going to that aesthetic, but the hips are different for salsa. Anyone know a video that focuses on that?
Now , 8:37 - Salsa teachers often explain this "natural arm movement". But that fits to natural going movement - forward action with transport and taking the heels for walking .Salsa Dancing has nothing to do with that . Forward and backward !! motion and sometimes every step toe heel or flat. But never as natural going !! So you cannot argue that it looks more natural by practicing natural arm movement . And indeed that complete action we see here looks a little unnatural ! But averall we like your videos - nice guy with very well teaching .
Good job, Anthony. If only beginners bothered to find such videos, they would greatly appreciate it. As a late-intermediate / early-advanced salsero myself I'm looking at this clip as a collection of awkward movements I often see in beginners' classes. This bounce is so ubiquitous... :-) I'd love to look back at my beginnings (I don't have them recorded) to see if I did that too :-P. One question - my English isn't perfect, so could you please tell me what A. says @ 4:23 (is it "staggered"?)?
This man is a great teacher - so natural and smooth! can a lady follow this instruction with using opposite feet to get a feel for the step with staggered feet and a more natural gliding feel? thanks.
@twopaddles1 the four is silent because it's a pause. technically it's a count from 1-8 so 1,2,3 pause,5,6,7 pause the four and eight are silent pauses we count this way to remember to pause.
who else is taking these life lessons incase the moment arrives and you have the ammunition to create a memorable moment with a stranger

thanks anthony your videos are greats
@Jirus4
In salsa 4 is a pause. You usually don't count it. So it is 1,2,3 - pause (which is 4) - 5,6,7.
can u make a playlist of the videoes you made so ppl dont have to search through all you uploads to find the "next step" in learning?
Just started to learn, this really helps. Thank you.
