I'm not familiar with Simple Minds outside of their mainstream MTV songs from the 80's but it's crazy how good some of these bassist were back in the day but I never realized it, yesterday i was listening to Huey Lewis and The News and i was like 🤯🤯.
Both these videos are fantastic! I think Derek played "The American" quite a few different ways looking at the videos of him playing it in the early 80s. There's a great studio clip of the band in France where he plays slightly different embellishments to say when he plays it on the famous Newcastle City Hall gig from later in 1982. It's a shame the basslines seem to take a back seat in the audio mix from Sparkle in the Rain onwards isn't it?
Rob van the man on the bass 👌 excellent. I'm 60 and I'm going to learn the bass . Already play rhythm guitar but the bass is my love in music... Nice 1 man 👍👍
Trip down memory lane, bedankt Rob!
Fabulous to hear the great man's stuff front and centre. Watching it played really brings home how versatile he was - an absolute master of the instrument to drive the sound of their golden era. Thanks for putting this together. Question: which did you find the most technically difficult to play?
Thank you for watching. Interesting question! I thought Hunter and the Hunted might be most challenging. But that one went on ‘tape’ rather quickly. 20th Century Promised Land however… Getting that line tight was quite hard. Especially because it got my fretting hand strained again and again after playing a couple of bars. This is the only song of the bunch I just can’t play all the way through. In the other video (nos. 10 - 1) Glittering Prize was toughest to get right. In hindsight I can see a lack of right hand technique is the culprit. I would play that one differently now.
Watching it back again it's now really obvious to see you're absolutely concentrating on 20th CPL and looking pretty pleased (and probably relieved) to have got to the finish point successfully!
Everyone is a killer. It is his bass lines from which all these songs hang. They lost something incredible when he left.
Derek Forbes is one of the very best ever. Simple Minds the best. Well done Rob
@@davidcooper717 Thank you!
Really tight Simple Minds bass lines, this is the music I grew up chilling to, absolute favorites 😎
Well done Rob. Just brings me back to why I learnt Bass fist day and had a very good career from it. I deffo owe Derek a few Bevvys....
So many great bass lines.
Derek Forbes is as unique as John Taylor is for DD😊
absolutely Brilliant!...best band on the planet with Derek Forbes in it
Thank you
Derek is a bass legend. You're not bad yourself.
Can’t wait to meet Derek next month in Liverpool for a Q&A. 👍🏻😀

Excellent job playing Rob! I still love all the music from these early Simple Minds albums.

Just proves that Brian & Derek are Mega...
very nicely played
@@The.Last.Guitar.Hero. Thank you!
Love Song!!!
Really enjoyed this. Like to see you do Kick Inside of Me
Wow, that tone sounds spot on. Enjoyed a lot.
Excellent love the obscure tracks like twist/run 😮 Df is the reason i picked up the bass 👍 tracks 21 to 30 now 😊
Brilliant. Love these videos, excellent playing!

Bravo!
This is terrific. Will share with Dan The Man.
very very good!😊
Love it precise
Rob,Rob,Rob, thank you so much, so many memories….. it’s my 60th at the end of the month, try to see if you can do “ Shake of the Ghost“ 🙏🏻
Nice work on LON there mate.
❤
Derek Forbes was the true musical brain behind Simple Minds. They are now a pale imitation of those days.
We all get old
Leuk !
