Love the car and certainly can be brought back. The cylinders that have no compression probably have rusty valve seats. Pull the head off the worst side and look at the valves. If rusty then pull the valves apart and do a simple valve job on the bench and put it back together. You can check out the cylinder walls too.
    Option 2, LS!

i think it just needs rebuilt, its been sitting so long, no sense to pull it apart if we wont go thru it fully

I would definitely rebuild that old 303. For 1953 a 303 over head valve engine was legendary. Great video!

Pull the heads, do a valve job and see if the compression returns. It could also have stuck rings which can be freed with MMO. It'll take patience but this classic with it's original engine is worth much more than it having an engine swap done.

I've been looking forward to seeing this video for a while. Great process. Like you, I never considered myself very mechanically inclined, but it's amazing what can be done with basic hand tools, the advice of some oldtimers, plus a little continuing education from ye olde TH-cam University.

That motor would look great restored as stock (or add the 4 bbl carb and manifold) to go in another Olds or in a period 50's hot rod (when that motor was king). Great video for those of us who do not normally do this.

Don't give up on that Oldsmobile it will run you done the hard work already. I just went through this with my 53 Packard that had been sitting for years and stuck. It had the same low compression, I poured motor oil in the cylinders and that seals them enough to build compression to start and then they will seal once the engine has heated up a bit. Pull that rocker shaft off and try a little heat to the base of that valve and hit it with some Blaster, you'll get it loose. Don't give up on that Olds its almost there!!

Hi Oldsmobile ! Nice to meet ya ! Interesting transitional period for car styling, still a bathtub but already goint the modern way with the one piece window and jet whoosh-shaped taillights.
Congrats on getting it rotating and have lots of speeding with it Ryan, so it lives up to all the rocket theme they were using for Oldses ! And congrats on the fact it was once an Autronic Eye, it was a novelty and pretty expensive accessory back then. Seems to have windshield washer too, or is it some kind of overflow container on the firewall ?

I JUST bought a 1950 Rocket 88 4 door that was a father-son project of a buddy of mine after they realized it was more work than they wanted to do. There was no motor or trans so I'm going to take a 307 and the 3 speed auto trans and suspension out of a 85 Delta 88 Brougham LS that I bought for $250 and put it in the 50 and then paint it Dyna Brown with a Silver roof, I'm using tractor paint to paint it, it's boring black now and make it a simple restomod daily driver. The good thing is there is no chrome other than the hood emblem, grille and bumpers but the bumpers were never chromed from the factory on the 4 doors anyway, they were painted silver so i'll just repaint them the same silver ae the roof. I'm going to redo the interior in black though and although the seats are in decent condition I'm going to trade the front seat for a couple of buckets so I can move the gear shift to the floor and figure out a center console.

I'm reading your comment, sounds right, I got the same car running ok, ticking, and very hard slow starting turnover, gotta boost it with 12 volts, do you think a stuck valve might be making to much pressure?
      Causing hard turnover?

Ryan I think you should vac the cylinders first and another couple of oils besides marvel is old atf, so many times at yard sales they are giving it away when clearing out, another is brake fluid, at project farm he tested brands and a couple homemades sent in, interesting practical testing. Scott at coldwarmotors has some experiences, like the 59 biscayne saved from being a crush container for transmission was froze solid, he has some practical electrical motor and starter knowledge as he rebuilt the generator after light was blinking, and hearing that pop might be an internal timing issue like a slipped timing chain which puts the piston and valves in synchronization and also plug wiring or distributor off a tooth or two, but with last results ask Scott at cwm, he can tell you about the inline 8s challenge of packard and buick. Ryan you bolder than I and you surprised me when the engine moved, it sounds like you've learned some things, and more to come, prioritizing and when to quit. Don't be too upset with Felix, the fact he killed meant his mother taught him that as survival, my cat Charlie catches things occasionally but has no kill instinct, but hunting to many cats is a game and way of keeping them occupied, have fun watching him wild indoors, with catnip mice to toss in the air, also laser points will wear him for sleep, for a while

To me, it's crazy to call a dwellmeter old school, but then again, I'm 65. When I was in my late teens and early twenties, most of my friends owned timing lights, dwellmeters, etc. I had those and a lot of other cool stuff, because I owned a Chevelle with a solid-lift bored-out 396 in it. I literally had the valve covers off every other weekend. I experimented with the timing and dwell on an almost-daily basis, making very slight changes in those and in the carburetor settings. I was running a Holley dual-line double-pump 780 during most of that time. If I started talking about my quarter mile times and top end speeds, nobody would believe me anyway, so blah blah blah on that. I'll just let it be enough to say: various law enforcement agencies pursued me several times during those wild days and nights, and none of them ever actually succeeded in catching me to give me a ticket, except for two times. There was one night in Shreveport on Greenwood Road when I voluntarily stopped out of concern for the public safety. Oh wait. I just remembered. The Officer didn't give me a ticket that time. There was this other time that I was only going about 66 in a 55 mph zone coming into Jefferson, Texas on US 59 Northbound. I wasn't going to try to run through Jefferson in the broad daylight. That's a 75 mph zone now. It was 55 back then because of the Nixon Era politically generated gasoline crisis, and the Texas State Trooper who made the stop wrote me up appropriately for 11 over. I think he didn't like my car, or didn't like that I was driving hung over and sleepy. Maybe he was a Ford guy.

If I were you I'd definitely be looking for exactly matching make and model cars so you can get a factory original car and repaint everything from the rails and chassis, can etcetera.

  • @gordhammond7105
    @gordhammond7105 ปีที่แล้ว

If I were involved I'd put it on 24 volts. Increased speed of rotation would increase compression and it'd likely try to fire up. Another thing is to get it on a country road and tow it in low gear. If the transmission ok it will turn the engine over 1000 rpm really develop compression and heat and run. I've done it.

Also, I would've definitely had grabbed on that 4 barrel intake manifold and seent if she fit. If it did then I would've bought a cheaper aftermarket 4 barrel carb and seen if you could get it to run on that. Those 303s weren't exactly power houses, but any advantages you can get would be put to good use. This thing is definitely worth keeping and if I were you I'd get those seat frames stripped, new foam and upholstery added, get a decent looking steering wheel for it, replace all of the floor pans, get all new glass for it, hit it with some bodywork, a lick of paint (preferably a deep blue or maybe maroon with metallic flake), some big Mooneye hubcaps for it (like the '50 Merc had in the movie Cobra), and put a cool dual exhaust on it with chrome tips that add fuel to spit fire....j/k, but the dual exhaust with glasspacks would be cool.

I couldn't see where the "pops" were coming from. Looked like they came up between the engine and firewall. Could they have come from the exhaust manifold or pipe(s)? If so they could have been caused by a cylinder firing when its exhaust valve is open. That could be due to the valve being stuck open, or due to incorrect firing order. Seems unlikely that the valve would be stuck open because there would have to be some compression to fire the fuel/air. Granted the engine does have some stuck valves, but probably not that one.

With the side opening, the carb may not have allowed rainwater to enter.

I have a 1952 running well but starts very hard. Very slow turnover, 6 volt system.
Gotta boost it with 12 volts,
Can it be something under the valve cover?
    it does tick

Ryan you might try putting the pulley in a cooler full of ice and really chill it, it might go on easier.

The car is a parts car. What I did learn today was that 1953 Oldsmobile cars came with a 12 volt system. I knew that 1953 Cadillac cars had a 12 volt system. Chevrolet cars did not have a 12 volt system until 1955.

I had to pour an entire gallon of PB Blaster into a 1953 Ford 239 flathead and let it sit for a month.
    Then it broke free easily.
