The chip collector is an absolutely brilliant idea. I'm going to do that to my stand. Thank you. Subscribed. Like you I inherited an old monster of a drill press that my father-in-law probably bought from a Boeing surplus store back in the seventies. It still runs great, but it doesn't have the modern features, so I recently replaced it with a simple mid-range Wen, (hahahaaa) and it's so much better :-) Sorry Dad, that I'm sure is in Heaven. I don't spend a lot of time at the drill press, but now I feel a good bit safer when I do. You have a great set up. Well done young man.
I love that your videos are just real! That said, I like the idea of the tabletop wings to collect debris but those corners may catch your legs once in awhile. But sturdy - yeah, you over engineered this one. Rock solid. Someday my grandson will be watching on whatever is techie at the time, as your grandson says, "my grandpa built this on a thing called TH-cam and now I'm refinishing it so I can land my hover truck on it." This thing will last forever.
Haha, man you paint quite a picture! I've wrestled with those corners a bit, and I'm sure they will catch me from time to time. I am going to round over the points so when it happens it's a little less severe, but I'm also really hoping that the location of the whole thing protects me a bit - I just have no reason to walk on either side of it since it will be surrounded by stuff. As for over-engineered... maybe, but I'm good with it. I definitely didn't want it to have any shimmy in it what so ever, so too strong is a good thing. The thing is such a monster, it must have been built out of old soviet tanks. I'm going to guess that it weighs 250+ pounds, which is a lot for a mid-height drill press.
I have 2 of these JET drill presses! you are not kidding, the column and drill head are absurdly heavy. I will be doing them in a semi offset back to back setup, with 1 for wood and 1 fo rmetal.
I've seen some people build cabinets that straddle the base of a floor standing model, but aren't so tall that they get in the way of moving the table for most applications. Might be a cheaper option than replacing what you've got.
Great construction and looks good too. I like the dust/chip containment idea but suggest you round off the two corners of the crown molding at the front. I can see them giving you a nasty gouge when you inadvertently rub up against them when focusing elsewhere. Once complete, the drawers will really increase the functionality of the stand and look forward to seeing it.
I've thought about that a fair bit actually. For a minute I considered inserting another 6" or so piece in those corners to really round it off... but that turns into some crazy angles that I'm not smart enough to handle. So now that the glue is dry on this one, I'll pull a few screws and see how much I can round it over before it looks silly.
Haha, I'm glad!!! That was truly just an opportunistic pause on my way out the door. I was in the process of cutting it from the footage when I decided it was dumber to leave it in... so I embraced the dumb and apparently made at least one person smile!
About dust collection on the drill press? Have you tried the rockler one with a articulated tube and a wide opening that you can position so it's not in the way and then use your big dust collector to get good enough airflow for the drill press dust collection since high airflow is usually what you need for those bigger chips the drill press makes.
I must have missed that when I was making the post for this video. It is the 18 gauge. Here is a link. www.amazon.com/dp/B06XF6MZJ5/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_MKTRNDB6ADV27KV3KAJS?linkCode=ml2&tag=gunflintdesig-20
Those are Jessem doweling jigs. You can get them as a single, two, or three piece set depending on what sizes you need. This is the individual 1/2-inch one I used in the video. amzn.to/3WpmTjW
Mark, I don’t believe you made this. Pretty sure you just used fancy editing to make it appear that you did. Come out to my shop and prove it, I’ll provide the unnecessary walnut😂. Great job!
So far it's all air dried. In the summer it can be useable as little as 6 months in that room. But mostly I figure I have to stay a year ahead of my supply.
@@Gazman299 Places working with bigger logs making slabs will just stack the log back together and it weighs enough to avoid the twisting. But since I'm just working with small scale stuff, those straps provide a ton of support through the drying process.
It's looking great already, Mark! Fantastic work! 😃
Looking forward to the next part!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks, you too!

Thank you! Sounds like a bittersweet upgrade for you. They didn't think too hard on safety features back then did they?
@@GunflintDesigns No, they didn't. His little table saw doesn't even have a riving knife. He had a set of wedges that he used :-)

Looking good can’t wait to see it finished.
Thanks 👍
Mark you have no idea how much I truly appreciate your productions and sense of humor. Keep it up!
I'm glad you like them!
Awesome project.
I really appreciate your shop. Love the lumber stacks. Just plain wonderful.
Such a joyful video. I NEED the next video 😊
I'm working on it!

Looking good! Makes me want to downsize from my floor standing model so I can build some storage like this!

That's going to be a killer drill press stand!
Just wait till you see the storage!
Zack Snyder will be proud of you with all that slow motion, good vid
Gotta find ways to keep myself entertained with this “filmmaking” stuff!
Love the coffee stop!
Haha, I'm glad!
Why was taking a sip of coffee so funny to me? I don’t know, but I was cracking up. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

Nice wood shed! A little jealous here

That's going on my tombstone.

I'm going to do this to my drill out of metal heavy duty and oil collector , for my steel projects
What Dewalt battery nailer do you use? It’s not on your affiliate list from what I can see.

Is your lumber kiln dried at all or is it all air dried?
Love your videos by the way.

@@GunflintDesigns Keeping it strapped down from wandering while it's drying is really smart.

A 20 minute video to glue 15 pieces of milled and cut wood together???
Yep. You get it.
