@@major949 it's not that simple. 1st they put him in a recumbent position so he won't put out as much power as his normal riding position. 2nd he might not have the sprint power to get it out of the water. Even a lot of pro cyclists can't put out 1000 watts for 10 to 20 seconds which is probably what they need. After it gets out of the water they won't need so much power.
Terry Winter he had Chris Hoy involved in his training, I wish he got Chris to take a go.
He didn't even sit in the thing! His knees didn't fit? Not surprised he didn't even come close to the Decavitator record of 21.3mph.

Brilliant effort as usual Guy. Have you considered a rowing scull equipped with hydrofoils? Since the fastest speed held for a non-modified single over 2000m is 5m 30s which with my rough work comes to approximately 11.5mph, I would think with massively reduced drag and larger spoons on the blades (oars), this could be increased significantly 😎

He needs a "Third Blade", on his prop ! . . . it would INCREASE its"Stability", ( "Rotational Vibration" ) allowing for greater speed.
I’m thinking Guys backyard build would have done better had there been gearing for him to choose what worked for him. 🤘🏻👍🏻😁
A flywheel and a clutch to store enough energy to get up on the foils, would also help smoothing the pedalling action.

Nice to see them showing the development stages, rather than just cutting to the end result. A "journey", but not at speed, as yet!
Might have a better luck if they used stepped hulls (like some floatplane skids), will get the trailing half to plane up out of the water a bit better until the hydrofoil is fast enough to lift it up completely. Other than that, it looked like the geometry was off for all the effort Guy was giving in either case. Should probably test on a recumbent platform to see what the proper range of leg extension is, and maybe a few other angle adjustments. Cramped motion or over-extension isn't good, will upset form, and will make it harder to pedal at full power for long. Also angle at the hips affects which muscle groups go into the power as well, it's also what can make riding a recumbent different from a standard diamond-frame bike. (Basically takes time to get into shape for the other riding form, tends to work some slightly different muscle groups.)
Getting closer though, but still back to the drawing board.
What about adding a wind vane also?

Add a sturmmey archer style hub to the front of the propshaft. Longer hulls are also needed, the drag coefficent of a hull is length overall waterline (squared) x 1.34 = max hull speed. Hence pushing a boat has a theoretical top speed! Add a bow bump under the waterline and drag would be a lot less and planing would probably occur!
YOU JUST NEED 2 GEARS!
A lower one to 'sprint' and get you up on to the foils and another to 'cruise' once you are up there. it only adds a few grams for the mechanism. Test for required power/speed by static towing. Why make it so complicated? just sayin.

@@ryanpresley3345 It is, they did, they do. I've even seen one with automatic gear change via a 'float/paddle' connected to the foils so that it changes gear as the craft rises enough. (I was in France last year when I saw it). I also saw one that used a double leg push instead of 'bicycle' type peddling. They didn't go very far, but it worked. The more effective ones didn't used peddles or props at all but used a bouncing motion and were launched off a platform.

@@ryanpresley3345 mechanically simple is what I meant, but obviously difficult to optimise. sorry for not putting that before. the drag/lift of foils compared to power available both as a 'sprint' and then sustainable is rather complicated to say the least. we also saw hydrofoil wind surfers, they were very impressive.

I don't understand the purpose of this. There already is a "human powered boat" able to move much faster and with a lot less effort, it's called a kayak and was invented a couple of thousand years ago...

I'm american, so I don't know Guy, but the concept of the show seems like fun. I won't watch other episodes because I just can't understand him, though. :)
why didnt they put the prop on the other side so its not so close to his bloody head. plus he needs wayyyy bigger sprocket perhaps even a gearset to help him get the cadence up and then switch gears to keep it going
Get a tow start to get on the foils, then release and make the speed run. Like a glider…

you can see his cadence was way too high, that was like being in 1st gear. you wont generate nothing. he needed a sprocket almost double the size

As someone who's biked a few years it looks like he's sitting just a little too far back from the pedals. I think the power curve is hindered by having to re-bend his legs from nearly completely straight. Not sure though.

Can you paddle a boat faster with a paddle in the water or the air? Man power is too underpowered for paddling (or propping) in the air. We lack the torque and r.p.m. I would try using a regular boat prop underwater with a 25 maybe 50 to 100 lb. flywheel for generating extra torque and have a hydrofoil every 2 ft apart. Have you tried that yet?
But be careful. If you use to big of a flywheel you will need a clutch to activate and deactivate your powerdrive.If it is mounted sideways it will act as a gyro too. So what happens if it would stop suddenly after it was completely energized?

Low-Speed Aerodynamics-Consultant & Propeller-Carver, speaking here... (!).
Part one, that there Airscrew Propeller has Aerofoil Sections which are indeed designed for "High-Lift/Low-Speed" applications...; but that means that unless fed overwhelming heaps of Torque, then an Airscrew with such a Section will bog-down from Induced Sectional-Drag well before ever turning sufficiently fast as to make enough Thrust to be useful.
Backtrack me to my recent Series on Peltier Powered Propellers, posted a few months ago..., wherin I experimented and found that for Low-Speed / Low-RPM applications featuring Low-Torque as well..., then LOW DRAG has to be the absolute priority for the Airscrew's Aerofoil-Section selection (!).
The best one that I've ever found so far is the thin, flat-bottomed, sharp-edged, Aboriginal Boomerang's Tangential-Cylindrical Section, with the Blade's maximum Camber & maximum Thickness both located at the 50% Chord-Line....
Next, regards the Hydrodynamics....
A single narrow Hull falls over sideways, adding Outriggers means 3 Hulls generating Drag rather than one, so the Catamaran with a Hydrofoil at each corner wins the Layout...
Using DISPLACEMENT Hulls on the Catamaran means having to cut through all the Hydrodynamic Drag until the Speed rises to the point whereinat the Hydrofoils can BEGIN to provide some Lift with which to replace Buoyancy lost via withdrawing the Displacement of the Hulls..., and meanwhile the Drag on the Displacement Hulls rises exponentially as Speed increases, but the Lift/Drag of the Hydrofoils doesn't lift enough of the Hulls out of the Water to overpower their Hull- Drag, plus that of the Induced-Lift from the Foils....; until somewhere around 9 to 12 Knots....
However, with either that inefficient Airscrew, or the Turbulence & Drag-enhanced Water-Propeller, nobody can produce sufficient Pedal Power to ever go sufficiently fast as to make the Hulls begin to arise from out of the Water....
Perhaps if you took a clean sheet of Papier-Mache, and then built y'selves the lightest Catamaran possible with Long Narrow Hulls which embody a Shallow-V configuration on their Planing-Bottoms - equipped with (Streamlined) "Steps" like those found on later models of Sunderland & Sandringham Flying-Boats..., and on the (Catamaran) Floats of every modern contemporary General or Military Aviation Floatplane, or Flying Boat...
Thus the Cat's Hulls will commence to Plane Hydrodynamically at FIVE Knots, thereby reducing Drag sufficiently for the Hulls to begin to rise up, and by 8 Knots to be riding "on the Step" thus further reducing Drag and then enabling the Underwater Hydrofoils to finally see the kind of Speeds required for them begin to take over from the Hulls' Planing-Bottoms' generation of Lift and thus, eventually, raising the Pedal-Boat up and out of the Water for a short straight sprint over a flat calm smooth surface.
The Gossamer Albatross took 0.76 Hp to take-off, 0.6Hp to climb, & 0.35 Hp to maintain Height...; in one of these Videos - Guy's pet Boffin admits to the Foilboat requiring 1.2 Hp to get itself up and Foiling, and then 0.85 Hp to stay out of the Water...
So, read all that again, and if you still want to play the game, then get your Propeller-Carver to make you something thin, from Hardwood, with the Aboriginal Aerofoil Section shown in my recent Video series...; give the thing a Perfect Helical Pitch all the way in to 2-inch Radius, so as to have a 10% Slippage Ratio at 25 Knots of forward Speed, & 600 RPM.
As a beginning..., after that, try playing with Pitch & Camber & Thickness Changes, ONE Change at a time.
Given all that, and with a Hydrofoil at each corner of a Catamaran ; then you should have a lot of fun - and maybe somewhat more success (?) !

As a former researcher into efficiency of aerodynamic designs for turbine blades...I agree with everything you say. I know Ron (the boffin from Lincoln) and am surprised that he didn't consider the blindingly obvious...look to emulate the design of the record holding design and refine that as an evolutionary development using computer hydrodynamics modelling before letting anyone loose with a clean sheet of paper. This was a poor attempt and how the team can be elated with the outcome is beyond me.

It almost seems as if some well-funded Television Producer has decided to script a series about a bright smiling keen but clueless Eager-Beaver who tries to pave his way to fame and fortune by doggedly making a Fool of himself..., and enlististing some Retirement-Ready old Mortar-Board to play the role of Academic Buffoon (possibly the original spelling of "Boffin" ?).
This Guy Martin bloke seems to epitomise the sort of person who would normally subscribe to the +Colin Furze Channel, and who's now suddenly become all Gingered-up (as if somebody had "Iced" his Coffee perhaps, or fed him Magic Mushrooms in the Stew...?) ; and now he's decided that his Mission in Life is to "Set a World Record, or Bust...!".
Perhaps he and your mate Ron are being paid sufficient as to not mind playing the Butts of a Moviemaker's Joke ; and the Students will do whatever puts them in their Professor's Good Books - and in front of someone else's Doccumentary Camera....(?).
I'd never heard of this Martin character until he suddenly showed up in my Feed about a week or two ago, and began pumping out whole collections of topic-linked & commonly-edited Videos...; almost as if some University's Media/Arts Department had a lot of funding to run a Doccumentary-making Course for a year, so they've funded the Enginerring Department to cobble up an Infernal Machine with which to compete with Guy's (also commissioned) Home-Whittled version..., and all to play up to the Cameras....; to give the Class of Doccumentarians something pithy and unpredictable to work with...
His Pedal Blimp had better Airscrews, anyway...., I'll give him that...(!).

In my initial comment I thought that I tried to go out of my way to be polite, and attempt to constructively critique what I had been shown of the Sayings & Doings & Comings & Goings of this bloke Guy Martin...
Because, for an autodidactic Aeroplanologist I'm pretty good at Low-Speed Aerodynamics & levitating with fcuk-all Power....; I tried to both explain why their Devices had behaved as they did, and then I suggested a few ways in which I think that they might be able to get a whole lot closer to the Record-Holder ; in whose wake they're currently trying to trail, and yet managing to almost totally fail at their goal...
In my reply to someone who claims to, as I like to hope that I do, know what they're looking at & talking about - as well as having ongoing actual personal knowledge of, & interaction with, the Professor Ron...., and who agrees with my assessment ; I outlined my hypothecations and speculations as to who funded the (obviously expensive) series of interconnected shiny little Techno-Bling themed Romantic Soap-Opera Video Vignettes.... (?).

He literally snuffed himself, while attempting to perform what was CHILD'S PLAY when I was a kid.
Because then, while having the broken-off foot-long Sting being "safely" stuck in his Chest - rather than taking the AVAILABLE Boatride to Hospital, & getting immediate Surgery to remove his new and very curious Stingray-Encounter Souvenier...; he then instead dramatically pulled it out of his Heart by hand, to bleed-out, on Camera....
All while he was making a Doccumentary Movie, off far North Queensland's Barrier Reef, "for his daughter...", Bindi ; who was at the time, hiking in the Snow in the Tasmanian Alps with her Mother, and her Brother.

Apparently these "Larger Than Life TV Personality" Tryhards and Wannabe Heroes often like to publicly shine very brightly ; but generally they overvolt themselves, and burn out their Filament, from straining to be seen to be always excessively incandescant....
So I'm a little bit curious as to how the obviously scripted series will end...; maybe Guy will be seduced by 9 blonde young Instructors in their 9 different ways to be "Fast", all in the one day - and we'll then see how he goes at trying to make one Baby in a single Moonth...? (!).
It's a sufficiently corny and obvious Plot that it would seem to fit right in...(?).

He (Guy)needs a team to help him achieve.. you should be on it!! I agree they mess around and dont achieve bugger all..why couldn't they have a slingshot to start him off?? What's the rules here? Guy is the man for the dedication and the balls to sit in some of the seats he has sat in but wheres the team?!
should of used a airboat design they float on top of water not in or even hover boat style. the reason sailboats go fast is the are skinny and long with a very big motor ( sail ). btw why did it have to be turned only by ur feet why couldn't u have added a crank for your hands to use also

Lincoln Uni's propeller is far too small and inefficient. Nice try from both teams, but both crafts were woefully under-powered so, 4/10.
Isn't the record about double that or even quadruple ?
There's far too much weight and bulk on that craft. Which means there's so much room for improvement. Just redesign it, make it better.

The seating needs to be closer to what you have on a recumbent. There's a reason the UCI banned recumbents from races against cyclists. Their seated position can generate more torque!
So, if it's human powered, why not try using arms and legs to power it? I think the foils were the main issue. I don't think they were correct from the start. They should have set them up so they started to pop out of the water at 3 or 4 MPH. Once the drag is reduced then it would have sped up a lot. The Cat would have been more stable once it was in the air.
Your waterline is too long and that's creating suction with the water
What if they joined forces and combined both propeller's, (combo wind & water) with the right gearing, maybe that'll get 'em foiling.
someone in japan back in the 90s made 18 and a half knots i heard time to have it go 21speed for more low gear acceleration and then high hear already moving power for the top speed

They didn't seem like they were all that will designed the first one might have worked with a better sitting position and a gearing ratio better suited for the prop

A single sculling boat with a reasonable rower can do about 15km per hour, say10mph. Human powered. These blokes are not very smart.

Bah. 4.1 miles per hour on a 17 ft canoe. Loaded 2 paddlers. Average for 3 hrs calm lake
So what did we learn today? Well a guy can build as faster a boat in his shed than a bunch of college engineering student. #2 some students should really be asking if they are getting the education they are paying for lol. As a side note it would have been nice to see a pro athlete try both crafts to see it they would have preformed better with more power, but I dough they would have beaten the record.

Dreadfully naive designs. Too heavy. Far too much unnecessary buoyancy. Far too much wetted area. Myriad other obviously naive faults.
And anyway, isn't a pedal powered hydrofoil that's lighter ..... and faster, already sold on the open market?

Look at all the mass, it looks like a human powered ice breaker, not guys fault, the designers etc are stupid and ignorant and again, guy is not a cyclist.
University of Linclon justifiably not known for Naval Architecture. Weight/ hull displacement calculations weren't even correct (framework in water). Low aspect ratio multi blade prop... No, just no! human powered boats with in water propellers have used slow turning high aspect 2 bladed propellers for 40 years for good reason. 5 minutes on Google at the start of the project would have told you all you needed and more.
Yeah definitely a flawed design not trying to be mean but they should have known it wasn't going to hydroplane before they ever took it to the water
I went faster on a pedalo in our local park 😝. Seriously though be interesting to get a top sprint cyclist on one of those machines.
I think the original run was faked. You can see the tape speed is not at normal speed. It is for sure at x4 or better. Have it looked at by a pro. I think they will agree.
