- There are many legends surrounding St. Patrick, whose feast day is celebrated on March 17. But what is the real story? Join Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, as he reveals how an extraordinary young priest brought Christianity to Ireland, and in doing so, inspired a movement that spread the Catholic faith throughout Europe. Then, as you think about celebrating St. Patrick's Day with corned beef and cabbage, hear about “Cooks with Collars,” priests who build community and spread God’s love, one recipe at a time.
Watch Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, and the Marian Fathers and Brothers from the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy on our weekly show, "Living Divine Mercy," airing on EWTN every Wednesday at 6:30 pm EST, with an encore presentation on Mondays at 9:00 am EST. Through teaching segments, Bible and St. Faustina Diary excerpts, as well as real-life examples of people who are living Divine Mercy in their lives, you will learn why Jesus said Divine Mercy is mankind's last hope of salvation! Ep. 131: St. Patrick

Father Chris, when you returned from Ireland, last year, you melted all of our hearts with the story about the sweet little orphaned baby. May God bless him and give him a beautiful and healthy life. Thank you for sharing the photos of you holding him. As one of the commentators stated the story of Saint Patrick is the story about CHRISTIANITY. Thank you for giving us all of the information both last year and in yesterday’s episode. I’ve shared the longer version on social media. Having been raised in an Irish and Italian neighborhood, i know first hand the contributions of the Irish to our Catholic faith. From the dedicated Sisters of Mercy, who were my first teachers to our parish priests, who baptized me and buried many family members, your remark that “American Catholicism is an Irish story” could not be more evident, especially in the neighborhoods of Boston. I genuinely cherish my upbringing there. I loved the rest of the segments, as well. It’s not surprising that “Cooks with Collars” featured Italian-Americans, as Sean Cardinal O’Malley once said that the Irish cookbook is the shortest cookbook in the world. Now I pray that the Italians too, under the leadership of the awesome Giorgia Meloni become as passionate about God and Eternity, as they are about cooking. God bless you, Father Chris 🇮🇪🌟🇮🇹Saint Patrick, ☘️🙏🏼☘️🙏🏼☘️Pray for us and Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons, Pray for us. 🙏🏼🇮🇹🙏🏼🇮🇹🙏🏼

Prat for Ireland so we will return to God...and the world through our beloved mother our lady...st Patrick and St Joseph with Our lady pray for us ❤
My wife is from Ireland, she's lived here in the US for almost 30 years. The change that has taken place in Ireland and even among her own family still there has been heartbreaking, almost none of them practice a Catholic lifestyle anymore. I hope and pray for their conversion. St. Patrick, pray for us. 🙏📿☘
Prayers needed
Beautiful to think of young St Patrick sitting with God in prayer as a young shepherd just as King David did also. Both men changed the world for God's kingdom and both are giant killers in a very powerful way 🙏🏻❤️🔥💫🍀
Mass for my family children and grandchildren. Love you, Jesus.
St Patrick pray for us in this troubled world...💙🙏🏽💙🙏🏻💙 Great way to explain the trinity ☘We all must pray for the truth to be shown to the modern day pagans and heathens who number in the tens of thousands in the world today..
Pray for Ireland Father Alar 🙏🇮🇪 It's being invaded 😢 Precious Blood of Jesus, save us and the whole world. 🙏🙏🙏

What a beautiful experience Ireland has created in your life you can never forget, Fr. Chris, and thank you for sharing. The charisma you possess also makes people open up and share their stories specially the joy of holding the innocent baby in your arms that leaves a lasting memory.
Thank you for presenting this episode on Living Divine Mercy the life story of St. Patrick. It’s a great example on how to live a life exposed to hardships, discernment on living a good life and to follow God’s call to serve Him and mankind.
Thanks to all who presented the Cooks with Colors which is very interesting and special. And to everyone who helped make this TV show become a part of one’s life in the quest of God and holiness, prayers for you all and God bless.

@@alwaysmisskaryn *the Catholic and Christian communities in India badly need yours and the world's prayers. Please pray for India. God bless us all*
@@noeldsouza412 I read an article in the Marian Helper magazine and I was very surprised that less than 3% of the population is Catholic. Recently in one of his talks, Fr Chris explained that there’s a great deal of persecution of Christians in India. Yes, I do pray for your country. The pastor of my church is a native of India, and he returns once a year to see his family. This past year when he returned, I gave him some Divine Mercy materials to take back. Continued prayers for your country.
@@alwaysmisskarynHappy Feast of St. Patrick to you and your family, Karyn Ann... May God be merciful and bless you all
@@alwaysmisskarynyes, it's true that we Christians only make up 3% and yet we are being persecuted in the name of conversion...just recently one of our catholic priest was convicted but later released, now with the upcoming election we minorities are worried as to what new laws may be implemented. All your prayers are needed for India
Thank you very much Fr Chris. Happy Saint Patrick's day much love from Ireland 🙏🙏🙏

Missed you this year in Dublin Fr Chris. Happy St Patricks day, God Bless you and all our courageous priests. ☘💚🙏
What a marvelous idea 💡.God bless you all and thankyou ♥🙏🌹.😊
I thank the Lord that you are still around, Fr. Chris. I know that you have a lot of more important places to be. I am an unchurched non- Catholic, but Christian (I think). If you were my priest/ Father I would become Catholic. But I know there is a lot of corruption in the Catholic Church, but I would become Catholic if you were my Father. I hope I go to heaven someday, and I hope I can meet you there. And I hope that every once in a long while I can be around you. God bless you Father Chris.
Thank you and God bless you. Please let me know if there's any way I can help you with understanding the truth of God's Church that he established in the Catholic faith. I would be happy to answer any questions and help you in any way I can.
Thank you for responding to my comments. I guess I still struggle with the idea that the Latin Mass is best. And there is a Latin Mass about 25 miles from where I live (in Western PA), but the Holy Spirit hasn't given me peace about attending that church (for whatever reason). So, now I need to find a Novis Ordo Mass (Catholic Church), but I'm not sure to which church to belong, to become Catholic. One church I visited encourages Yoga as an exercise. I know that yoga is controversial. Another church I visited was Greek / Byzantine, but an early Mass--and not practical to attend due to my work schedule. I guess, if you think of me, pray for me that the Lord would help me find the right Catholic Church to which to belong. God bless you Father Chris.

Thank you father for telling us about St. Patrick’s life story. He must have been an amazing man.
Thank you all sooo much! I went to Ireland in 2000 when I was 17. The country is so incredibly beautiful and I would love to go back. Please know how much this live stream means to so many of us. Also, being able to watch Mass on the live stream is so wonderful to me. Thank you all for the love and knowledge you have shared with us all. Father Chris, you said once that love is willing the good of another. Well, this series is good for us in so many ways. Father Chris, thank you for loving us. You teach us the truth, not just what we think we want to hear. ❤🙏🌎
Andrea, what a sweet, heartfelt message and I agree 1000%. Not sure if you saw it but if you go to the homily from the Ash Wednesday mass of February 22, 2023, or the homily podcast app as well, Father Chris speaks in detail about his then recent trip to Ireland. I so enjoy chatting with you in this format, and the only thing that would be better would be meeting you face-to-face. I Hope you are still thinking of coming to Divine Mercy Sunday. Karyn
@@alwaysmisskaryn oh Karyn, you are so wonderful and sweet! I cried reading that! It has been my absolute pleasure to have met you this way and communicated with you. I sincerely look forward to meeting you in person. The joy and love you have for our faith is beautiful. Thank you for sharing that love with me. I didn't watch Ash Wednesday mass, but I will this evening. I can't wait to hear all about his trip and the presence of the Holy Spirit he must have felt there. I know I definitely did when I visited there 24 years ago. I am hoping to arrange a way to get to Divine Mercy Weekend. "Where there is a will, there is a way"! I'm determined to visit the Shrine this year! Peace be with you, Karyn.❤️🙏🌎🌹🩸🐑

Bethlehem, PA is familiar. I had a summer job there in college.
Just as a small note of interest, there are grass snakes in England but not lreland.
I was teaching one little Latvian girl. She said her Dad remarked indignantly
that shamrock grows in Latvia. Shamrock comes from the clover family and the
particular plant only grows in lreland. The leaves are especially small and some
are heart shaped, not the undeveloped ones.
Awesome talk! Fantastic white habit!
What is the signifigance of Fr.Alar's white cassock? First time I have seen a Marian Father wearing one
The irish still drink. Specifically on st pattys
It’s true, the Irish have that reputation but I never knew the historical reason. Having worked in substance-abuse settings, I have taken care of patients of every ethnic persuasion not just the Irish. Sadly, addiction knows no ethnic or racial or gender boundaries. Sick and said people tend to self medicate, unfortunately.
I wish you and your community and all Irish people a holy St Patrick's Day.
I did not know he was the nephew of St Martin of Tours.
Here in England, it will not be officially liturgically observed as it falls on a Sunday and is not a Solemnity here. Possibly some churches with irish priests and/or a high proportion of Irish in their congregations may have an unofficial commemoration on the 16th or 18th. I would guess that in Ireland, where it is a Solemnity it will be kept officially on one of these dates.
It is distressing to see the secular celebrations of St Patrick's Day, often results in drunkenness, which Patrick would have disapproved of and is FORBIDDEN by the Catholic Church [moderate drinking is permitted, such a glass of beer or wine with a meal, but drunkenness is forbidden].
