Love this vid. Great overall build, very cool stealth theme. All of the parts make perfect sense and the result is excellent. I watched the original stream and this is a very cool and concise way of summarizing the whole purpose of the build and getting quickly to the main takeaway. Great job!
Thank you Robey for showing that you CAN air cool an i9-12900K as long as you have the right case that works hand-in-hand with the CPU cooler. That is a perfectly paired chassis to go with the cooler. And no "RGB" strictly performance/business also looks awesome!
There is tons of RGB in this build. He just toggled it off. That's the best part of RGB. Want it lit up? Looks neat. Want it blacked out? Simply toggle it. No reason not to have it.

I bought it, look forward to completing the build and then follow your journey to overclock. Making matters better I had already settled on the fractal torrent for case as well. Awesome video!

Bro just the video I was looking for! Absolute amazing results! I was looking at upgrading and was honestly pretty worried about 12th gen intel CPU temps because I like to air cool my PCs. So was looking at the Noctua nh-u12a and how the temps might be so this hit the nail on the head. Glad to see it was more than possible without dangerous heat.
I originally cooled my 12600k with a Big Shuriken 3 but was getting up to 100C on Cinebench. I switched to a FrostFlow240 and replaced the AIOs fans with Noctua 120mm PWMs and also changed the 92mm 3-pin DLH21 case fan to a Noctua PWM unit. I did the same undervolt but no overclock and dropped the peak temps to consistently less than 80C. The other caveat is the GPU (6950XT) is a gd reactor and is the source of most of the heat exhausting from the case.

Justin, thanks so much for this video! I just ran across it this week while researching a choice between the 12700k and 12900k as I upgrade from 9900k. Currently have a full-size Torrent and Noctua NH-D15 cooler, which do a great job with the 9900k and a 3080 - your video convinced me that I should be able to manage the 12900k with that gear (and maybe an additional rear-panel fan added to the Torrent just in case, using a little undervolting and overclocking. Will also be adding a new CPU holddown frame, replacing the stock lever system, to keep the IHS as flat as possible to optimize cooling. Avoiding liquids in the box is a high-priority to me, but still want a system good for the next few years with GPU and VR-headset improvements along the way. Your work here is much appreciated, buddy - just the sort of info I was searching for, and more!

Did want to build with the new Ultra core in Oct 10th 2024 but OMG I only have so much dough and want some of that gravy you all get! Every form of refuge has its price. Air Cooled for life.
How are your temps this good? With this exact setup (just in a Torrent Compact case - shouldn't make much difference) I'm hitting around 99-100 degrees with Cinebench R23. I tried reapplying the paste 3 times and ended up swapping the NH-U12A for an NH-D15 (which dropped my temps around 2-3 degrees) and with the addition of the -0.075 undervolt it now sits at around 89 degrees, which seems manageable. But still, your temps are way, way lower. How was your room temp during this testing? Or is it just a binning thing or something?

Love your videos! Question, does the cpu throttle during long video renders and other cpu usage? Thinking of doing a similar build for my new 4k content creation work station and want to stay with air vs AIO.
Hey Robey, how will the cooler Master MA612 Stealth compare with the Noctua cooler in this video? Is it a recommended alternative if the Noctua isn't available in my area? Planning on using it on an I7 12700F, no over clocking, just auto mode for 2K gaming.
I have an x5950 cpu on a Asus x570 crosshair Vlll Hero motherboard and a Gigabyte 3090......Aircooled BY Bequiet Dark Rock Pro 4 and Bequiet silent wings fans.....works perfect AND quiet even OC so I think it will work with a 12900k.
Hello. Thanks for the video! What is the real height of this tower cooler (Noctua NH-D15) with RAM installed? The front fan is located above the RAM bars, they do not allow the fan to be as low as the middle one. What is the maximum height of the RAM slats is acceptable, so that the front fan fastened does not exceed 165mm? What will the author say in response?
How come you have between 70-80 degrees with NH-U12A and I with NH-D15 have almost 100 at max load? I might be stupid or something, but i just dont get it.. maybe its an airflow problem? I really dont want AIO

I think there is a minor factor that restrict the state of art CPU cooler (Noctua NH-U12A). The DIE of 12900 is vertical and it directly touches only 2 or 3 heat pipes. I wish you could try the same performance test while the CPU cooler is 90 degree turned so it covers the long chip with all pipes. Can you ?
that is a myth, it doesnt matter which direction cooler is facing purely for heatpipe/cpu die contact. It might make a difference for different reason such as airflow configuration in your case. Here is the source: th-cam.com/video/O1WGlPrH4IU/w-d-xo.html
Hey Saeid! I read your comment and deliberately tested the difference for you when building my PC (Fractal Torrent, i2900k, Noctua U12A, Asus z690 Hero MOBO, basically mimicking this video’s build). My results came from stock voltages and only read in BIOS, so I did not use Cinebench because I got these readings before installing on OS. I kept the test perimeters the same with only orientation changing. (including thermal paste). in BIOS readings was 40C when vertical and 32C when horizontal. This is of course a huge difference! It showed me that despite the heat pipe concern, horizontal was significantly better.
Adding onto my comment, I let the computer sit in my bedroom, ambient temp 75F, for an hour. Then I ran memtest86. Then I let the pc sit while I did other stuff. Each time it was pretty consistent, vertical would start at 36C and then stabilize around 39-40C, where the other orientation would sit around 32C stable regardless. Obviously getting cinebench points would help more and undervolting would help temps, however I do believe a stable change of 8C is enough to answer that question! I also did the 1mm plastic washer mod to the lga1700 bracket preemtively, so I do not have a comparison with or without, but I had that same washer mod for both orientations. I used the thermal paste that came with the noctua cooler.
Man I was looking for something smaller then my dark rock pro4 possibly for the 13900k and if the Noctua NH-U12A is getting low 80s on both aida/cinebench on a 12900k might just get one.
Just finished my 12900k build yesterday. Got the NH-D15 installed and it’s great, but it’s also a pretty beefy boy. Seeing this video makes me feel, like i chose the wrong aircooler… Does it really outperform the D15? I haven’t tested any benchmark, yet. Since I‘m planing to play games on this PC for the most time, high temps won’t be an issue, cause they won’t appear. I still like to keep the CPU as cool as possible, now i feel stupid for buying the D15 without hesitating 😂
@@Hiter thank you for the reply! I build it into a BeQuiet 500DX Case, I guess airflow shouldn’t be the biggest issue in this case. It‘s not a fractal torrent, but it seems fine. Hello, i am currently building my pc and i wanted to do the same thing as you... can you tell me the cpu temps in games? What games did you play? Also what are your cpu settings? My case is a fractal meshify 2x-atx 3x140 fans in front with 1x140 in the back.

There are some interesting bios settings at play…I have an 360 aio and had temps running close to 100 (p core 2 and 5 specifically would spike) but would hit 27k in cinebench ( did not actually get any performance throttle ) updated bios and wouldn’t see temps over 90 but cinebench dropped in half closer to his performance.
where does it say that it outperforms the d15? that's cap! and from an aesthetic point of view you should have gotten the chromax black heatsink covers. otherwise: AIRCOOLING FTW!
I just bought a NH-D15 and ran it in a fractal design torrent case on a Asus strix z790-e, 13700k at 5.4. The d15 was only 2 degrees cooler than my NH-U12S with 2 fans. I sent it back and ordered a NH-U12a
find a air cooler with copper heat pipes, don't purchase aluminum heat pipe coolers they aren't as efficient at pulling heat into the heat sink. My 36$ arctic cooler air cooler keeps up with my i9 12900kf under load because it uses 5 copper heat pipes
Speak for yourself and not “ALL OF CONSUMERS”, pretty sure I’m not the only who likes big cases. By the way, the Fractal Design Torrent has a compact version that still supports ATX motherboards and power supplies (and a “Nano” version for ITX motherboards). You should do your research before talking so much bs
Speak for yourself dude I'm sure most people prefer these "old bloated cases" and not some overpriced compact case that increases build difficulty, thermals, and noise.

Glad you made this video! I've been looking at possibly using this case, however not sure if I wanted to use a top AIO or going air cooled. Looking forward to the next video
Finally, the video I've been looking for
What I wanna know right now is what the proper settings are to undervolt a RTX 3090 Ti for better efficient performance in this same build…
Just passing by with my head about to blow lol I have this case and im stock in what motherboard D5 should I go for a gaming set
nice i have the exact same setup with the D15 and full Fractal torrent RGB and was able to set to 0.075 and 51xP all and 39Xe all and average 77c in CPUID HWM
You convinced me the best air cooler can tame the i9 monster.
I might have missed it, but at what speed was the cooler running?
What's a "DH15"? I have an "NH-D15", but haven't heard of that "other" cooler.
A robeytech video that’s actually useful? And that I actually enjoy? And I brought a NH-U12A for my 12900k with a 3090 founders.
How is it for gaming
The Torrent is a Beast, i own this Case!
Thank you Robey, amazing video! Do you know approx. what would be the temperature of a 12700k with the same build? (when idle or doing very basic tasks)
I used a EK 120 Aio. Kind of works.
Amazing test.
Thank you! Cheers!
Can you make a video how to Undervolt GPU as 3090? Big thanks
Love your videos! Question, does the cpu throttle during long video renders and other cpu usage? Thinking of doing a similar build for my new 4k content creation work station and want to stay with air vs AIO.
Pretty cool of you to show mistakes here. I'll definitely be more diligent about paying attention to the small things.
Hey Robey, how will the cooler Master MA612 Stealth compare with the Noctua cooler in this video?
Is it a recommended alternative if the Noctua isn't available in my area?
Planning on using it on an I7 12700F, no over clocking, just auto mode for 2K gaming.
I haven’t been able to test it tbh
Is this with XMP enabled and the w11 power plan set to high performance?
I’m running a 12900ks if I benchmarked it would thermal throttle in till I undervolted it
How come you have between 70-80 degrees with NH-U12A and I with NH-D15 have almost 100 at max load? I might be stupid or something, but i just dont get it.. maybe its an airflow problem? I really dont want AIO
Might’ve done better on 3D mark if you left lower active core counts at higher frequencies
What do you mean Denis? We had all core at 5.1, but I must be missing something.
@@robeytech you can set it so that it will increase frequency based on how many cores are active
turns out you can... this was so entertaining!!
Super glad you enjoyed it!
Think it’s good with i7-12700KF ? NH-U12A
I wonder if the same system and cooler were put in the NR200P case.
Well the gpu wont fit nor will that AiO
You think the Noctua NH-U12A can cool down the i9 13900k significantly and not much noise?
That would be tough, we haven’t tested it. But it’s hotter than the 12900k and it took a certain case to air cool it.
Robytech is i5 12400f good for simulation game like oxygen not included that many datas to process late game?
i also only have 2x8 16gb 32 mhz and rtx 3050. can you review i5 12400f
I’m still on windows 10 do you get much more performance on windows 11?
I think there is a minor factor that restrict the state of art CPU cooler (Noctua NH-U12A).
The DIE of 12900 is vertical and it directly touches only 2 or 3 heat pipes.
I wish you could try the same performance test while the CPU cooler is 90 degree turned so it covers the long chip with all pipes.
Can you ?
that is a myth, it doesnt matter which direction cooler is facing purely for heatpipe/cpu die contact. It might make a difference for different reason such as airflow configuration in your case. Here is the source:
th-cam.com/video/O1WGlPrH4IU/w-d-xo.html
Seeing this video makes me feel, like i chose the wrong aircooler…
Does it really outperform the D15?
I haven’t tested any benchmark, yet.
Since I‘m planing to play games on this PC for the most time, high temps won’t be an issue, cause they won’t appear.
I still like to keep the CPU as cool as possible, now i feel stupid for buying the D15 without hesitating 😂
Better dicision, nh d15 is good & reliable then liquid cooler. I hope u have great air case with fans
@@Hiter thank you for the reply!
I build it into a BeQuiet 500DX Case, I guess airflow shouldn’t be the biggest issue in this case. It‘s not a fractal torrent, but it seems fine. Idle temps are about 30-31°C. I will run some benchmarks after work and keep you updated. Thank you again for your fast response, makes me feel a lot better now.👍🏻
This case is not good in airflow, but fine, u can add fans as much as possible. I personally recommend Lancool 2 mesh. But no problem, be happy.
Hello, i am currently building my pc and i wanted to do the same thing as you... can you tell me the cpu temps in games? What games did you play? Also what are your cpu settings? My case is a fractal meshify 2x-atx 3x140 fans in front with 1x140 in the back.
Looking to get a 13700k with this case and a noctua ndh15 I only game. Don't overclock will it be fine?
i keep hearing and seeing around the internet that my 240/360 rad will choose the cpu to be thermal limited how is this possible
ie: vid in question th-cam.com/video/RB-VNZrjLBI/w-d-xo.html do i buy a bigger case/ just start my build all over again?
Is a stock fan for I9 12900 ( non k ) enough to keep temps low? No clocking. Just factory settings
definitely not. This guy buys a high end cooler AND underclocks his cpu
I have the 12900k using an corsair elite h105i my temps are a lot higher then your setup. I may have to check my mounts.
I have a video that comes out next week to step you through things to do to help improve thermals on a 12900k!
i am using EK 360 AIO with 12900k but my temp is lot higher. 90 - 95c I checked my mount but its looks ok. i don't know how the air cooler can perform so better than the 360 aio.
Air cooled doesn't seem to bad
It isn't, crazy right!
Will I be able to mount this u12a on it 12700k??
3dmark isn’t very taxing on a cpu.
Thanks Awesome
64 dba is not quiet, even on the edge of your desk away from you. Corsair ML120s are rated at 37 dba, and they are stupid loud. That's almost twice as loud as these.
Hope it works with a 12900KS :D :D
so should I choose U12A or D15 for 12900K/KS ?
D15 All day long. Even Noctua will back this up.
Great video I am going to build an i9 for my nephew he is a Product engineer but I did not want to use a water cooler and I wanted to use an air cooler. more reliable. for a business. I build him one 2 years ago and use at that time an i7. thank you for your information. I use Prime95 to stress the CPU. can you use Prime 95 v26.6: thank you.
You better show us benchmarks at the same time while you are talking
i am using EK 360 AIO with 12900k but my temp is a lot higher( 90c - 95c) I checked my mount but its looks ok. I don't know how the air cooler can perform so better than the 360 aio.
Well it’s more than just the cooler it’s also being fed lots of air, the quality of the fans on the cooler etc.
@@robeytech my casing is big and with good airflow. it could be the ambient temperature of Bangladesh. nowadays ambient temp stays 35 to 40 c in here.
Before I watch this whole video. I would say it is possible to air cool it...
where does it say that it outperforms the d15? that's cap! and from an aesthetic point of view you should have gotten the chromax black heatsink covers. otherwise: AIRCOOLING FTW!
I have never seen a review where the U12A outperforms the D15!
Since you only do giveaways within the US, I see no reason for me to try to participate in these competitions by subscribing to your channel.
This guy is full of it
Which RAM? Corsair …
Is just bulding a very simler computer, torrent compact, a 14700K same cooler, also will probely be a 4070 ti super....
Dark rock pro 4 can cook this cpu? Anyone have a similar setup with the dark rock pro 4?
Thinking 🤔 Microcenter hit up pick up I9 12900k with Motherboard Memory DDR 5 6000 Mhz next few weeks see what all fuss is about
Thanks for the review bro. I'm gonna get the NH-U12a for my 12900k, water cooling is not my thing.
Do you have U12a now and how about temperature?
Bout to melt some metal on the heat it’s going to give off
Did you see the temps?
@@robeytech ya I did, it’s a joke
So i hit 100 degrees in stock settings with aio cooler and you hit 70 with air cooler..sure
Well it's not just any air cooler, it's the best (or second best) there is
Sir not every aio is better than air coolers, this air cooler is actually one of the best
Hi mate you doing good but your camera really black.. cant see Computer :) pls check this stiation. Have a nice day.
i call massive bs on the u12 outperforming the nhd15
Okay. Still does
@@robeytech Laws of physics are broken then ))) Seriously? Did you read NSPR values of the coolers on noctua website?
I just bought a NH-D15 and ran it in a fractal design torrent case on a Asus strix z790-e, 13700k at 5.4. The d15 was only 2 degrees cooler than my NH-U12S with 2 fans. I sent it back and ordered a NH-U12a
holy smokes 64 db. that's noisy as hell
find a air cooler with copper heat pipes, don't purchase aluminum heat pipe coolers they aren't as efficient at pulling heat into the heat sink. My 36$ arctic cooler air cooler keeps up with my i9 12900kf under load because it uses 5 copper heat pipes
Your under-volting demo is informative. Your dosimeter observations are erroneous. You need to learn about sound and how to measure.
STOP the BS. Run Cinebench R23 it goes over 100C with Nactua NH U12
your chip is so bad 😝
Look man these old bloated pc cases aint it. Im sorry but no. Enough is enough we the consumers want compact ATX cases
@@wolololololol3988 also you had to “edit” your incoherent poorly structured paragraph LOL pathetic.
Speak for yourself dude I'm sure most people prefer these "old bloated cases" and not some overpriced compact case that increases build difficulty, thermals, and noise.
