  • The sounds of Spotted Hyenas making their distinctive whooping calls at night in the African bush. Spotted Hyenas have a wide vocal repertoire and make a range of whoops, lowing calls, grunts, growls and also the famous laughing sounds.
The Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) sounds in this video are a compilation of four recordings I captured in South Africa and Botswana. More examples of wildlife sounds and bird calls can be found on my website wildambience.com/wildlife-sou...
Some notes on the sounds in this video:
0:00-0:53 - Two Spotted Hyenas calling in sync.
0:53-1:48 - More distant hyena whooping sounds
1:48-2:27 - Wavering whoops by a Spotted Hyena
    2:27-3:14 - Close hyena calls
All of the sounds featured on this channel were recorded on location by Wild Ambience. Well, for the first series of calls I was asleep in a cabin with the recorder about twenty metres away, so technically unattended but those calls woke me up! The others were captured by more remote drop rigs.

Were some of those two calling in sync?

Yes, the first sequence was a mother and full-grown male cub calling in sync together.
