Videos widely circulating on social media show Chinese food delivery drivers increasingly having meltdowns. They are among the 12 million drivers who support the world's largest food delivery market. Amid a stagnating economy, more people are turning to gig work as a means of supporting themselves. What was once an industry that provided delivery workers a stable income has become a pressure cooker exacerbated by increased competition and, according to some drivers and experts, a gamified delivery app algorithm that does not have the workers' best interests at heart.

I worked 1 month for Deliveroo in London. Trash abusive pay and 1/3 customers were a nightmare. Once I showed up at a house in Kensington (Very Expensive Area). These people were so rich they could afford to buy 2 houses next to one another and turn it into a double house. We're talking tens of millions of £. For 15 minutes I stood there while the woman's servants ran around trying to get the 2 digit code so I could leave. I couldn't leave before because the 15 minute timer prevents you accepting a new order. Apparently "she's asleep and we aren't allowed to wake her". Eventually they got the code via text message and I left, having been there for more than 20 minutes. I made £2.90 from that delivery that in the end took more than 40 minutes.
Insanity
Maybe the company should make the customer paid for making you wait. I don't know about Uber or other hailing services but I know in my country there's a hailing comp that make customers pay if they make the driver wait for more than x mins once the driver arrived at the location of the ride.
I'd lose my mind
Another thing I'll add is blocks of flats. The trash pay rate is made worse by the fact that 9/10 the customer in a flat wants the food brought to their door. Every block of flats if different so each and every time you gotta lock the bike, figure out where the entrance is, figure out how the flat numbers work, figure out how to use the lift, find the door. It was kinda cool being able to gain access to loads of different buildings in London that you wouldn't usually be allowed inside, but it's cold, I've been riding for 8 hours, I've made 80 quid, I could've made 120 if you would just be willing to meet me in the lobby. Following week an engine problem on the car comes back with a 700 quid bill. Yeah man this job will drive you insane. Quitting made it possible to love people again Lol.
The woman must be crazy rich and an important person. I believe the fault here would be in the company's system.

Competition creates "innovations" but at the same time it can also lead to "exploitations". When the companies starts the pricing war, it is a win-win for the company and the consumers, but it is a "bad news" for the delivery men. This kind of competition is so cancerous. Any government on earth should do more on regulating the delivery apps to protect the livelihood of delivery men. Since all of them are economically vulnerable people, if any government wants to develop its own delivery app as part of their socialist platform, I don't think it is a bad idea at all.

Competition leads to innovation, but only in the sense of something giving you an advantage. Paying your workers less than your competition is also an advantage you can use. great reporting. Food delivery companies need to be accountable.
Not only food delivery companies but the customers who ordered the food. Many customers can be very inhumane too expecting them not to be even a minute late.
Food delivery workers should know about the industry they are joining at this point. How long do the rest of us have to listen to the bottom rung of the ladder complain about how many people are stepping on them? Totally worthless industry employing people who literally can't do anything else. Their only service to the economy is making sure people who actually contribute to it have more time at their desks.
Once saw a delivery driver rushing (and I mean rushing) down a flight of escalators in Shanghai. No wonder.
The algorithms for food delivery people in Indonesia is also equally dehumanising. It looks like our local companies modelled it after what's tormenting these guys. I always try to tip because with how cheap my subscription is & the crazy food discounts, you've got to wonder what they actually earn in the end?
mia_djojowasito_malik hallo kamu cantik sekali
I happen to be a recently new driver here under g**ek since July this year. Lately the company have been hiring for the "area partnership" specifically for food deliveries only. Us drivers calls this "Aceng", short for "Akun Gocengan". I am one of them. I'll get back to this in a moment.
I'm not sure if it exists outside of JaBoDeTaBek, but for example the area where you are placed is either Bintaro, Pamulang, BSD, etc. Once you're placed in one area, you are permanently placed there with no opportunities to; let's say upgrade your account so you can be a full partner and can take ride and or package orders.
Many of the regular drivers have taken the toll due to the food orders being sent to "Aceng", even though they only get paid Rp.5000 so long as the trip is from 0.1-4km, moreover haven't taken into account on how far the trip to the restaurant is. Many times I could be taking 3-4km to one restaurant and another 3-4km to deliver it. And I only get 5k per trip.
Per day I could probably get about 25-35 orders on a regular basis and could rack up about 150k-250k , but it's even harder for regular drivers because to even get one they could be waiting for 1-3 hours to even get a single order be it food, package, or ride. As far as I know, their bonus quota and pay have been cut as well, to the point for a day they could probably get only about 100k-200k. And it's worse for them because they do also take rides and packages, longer travels and their way back home which takes extra fuel. Not to mention motorcycle maintenence
why you tipping? the more you tip, the less these companies will pay these workers.
😢but the average salary indonesia is equally to what a driver got, for eXample my friend daily take 1-2 order t be paid end of the day 50-85rb almost 6$ which is 1/2 average salary and he use electric ⚡motor so no need gas.
So the system need to be changed not to rush a bit, that all
it seems my comment got "censored" or "deleted". I'm gonna try this one more time
I am a driver for one of the companies here in Indonesia. The big green (I'm gonna try to avoid even censoring the actual name cause that's probably why it got deleted).
I'm a recently new driver since July this year, and I'm the designated area type of driver, specifically for food deliveries only. For us drivers we call this type the "Aceng" or "Akun Goceng". We can only choose one area and stick with it permanently (ex: Bintaro, BSD, Pamulang, etc, only one), per trip we get Rp. 5000 but only within the range of 0.1km-4km and within the area you are at.
A lot of regular drivers are getting the toll of lacking orders due to us "Aceng" drivers getting more of the food orders, resulting the regular drivers having to rely more on ride or package orders. But even that they struggle. And I haven't even mentioned online taxi car drivers. If you have heard, yes, they even get less pay than us daily.
Companies take too many cuts while we get the short-end of the stick. I personally don't mind the amount of pay I get because I don't really have that many expenses. But for older drivers, by that I mean drivers who've been with these companies for 5+ years, drivers who have a whole family to feed living in like a 3x3 rent house, getting absolutely no care whatsoever, and only a selected few solely for "marketing" and "image" purposes, it's disgusting.
"Mitra". Partners. This is meant to be a partnership, why then are drivers treated like disposable machinery?
Everyone wants cheap delivery. Everyone wants to get paid the most for their time. Companies want to maximize profit. You can't have all three happening at once. The more people hear about getting paid more, the more people want to do it, and the less they get paid.
Yeah, but for the customer it rarely makes much of a difference if the delivery was 10 minutes late, but for the courier it makes an enormous difference. Like as a customer, I wouldn't have mind waiting 15-20 minutes extra waiting for my food to come by. It's complete incompetence from the companies' side that they've optimized those algorithms to squeeze out of every last minute
The delivery isn't cheap. Our service money just goes to the lazy boss while the driver gets a dollar or only cash tips.
The Boss is the evil guy here
Everything in this world has Impossible Trinity from central bank policy to personal life. This is one of many examples of it.
I respect and sympathize with these people who bring convenience to our lives regardless of the scorching heat or the cold winter, day or night. I always feel that the delivery time requirements on their platform are too strict. In addition, if they want to deliver the goods to your door, they will inevitably have conflicts with the security personnel hired by the community. The government should formulate corresponding policies in this regard.
And this is the nature of Uber Eats, DD, Deliveroo etc, not just China, but Worldwide.
No one needs their stuff that quickly! Slow down the delivery system, it will be better for all.
"No one needs their stuff that quickly" - lol all the customers would beg to differ
@@user-tr1zjThere is a cultural underlay going on here where in making demands, you must compensate for downplay. Everyone doing business (and in any social situations) in China will downplay you at some point. If one don’t exaggerate their situation, they will not be taken seriously or get what they needed/deserved. Yet, in practice this also means sometimes people were getting more than what they needed and therefore wastes the resources.
Unfortunately something similar also happens Indonesia. Gojek and Grab ride hauling apps at first pay their drivers quite well leading to many people becoming drivers. After many years, the companies are running out of investor's money and started increasing the amount they take for every payments and in some cases until 30-40% of every payment are taken to the companies instead of the drivers but the price stays low because they don't want to lose customers. Yet these companies still spend a lot of money paying famous people for advertising.

This is same as story of food delivery workers in India. Time pressures, dwindling earnings and unsafe conditions. Gig economy is becoming biggest employment source the world over
Those clips are unbearable to watch. In a way, I’ve been through the same way.
I too did food delivery but I quit before I have a meltdown. The orders were getting ridiculous where you have to drive multiple highways or through one or two towns. And I got a borderline low rate when all I did was doing my job right.
This is my opinion, but it feels degrading.
I was at a small very popular drink place last year, I don’t know if the ordering system went out the window or what, but the drink place was 100 deep in tickets and the delivery drivers were all crowded at the counter, screaming at the lady employees as they were trying to get orders from their “kitchen”, some were in tears. There were a couple delivery drivers who were seriously on the verge of violence on these young girls and I don’t think most of these drivers knew nor cared that this isn’t the counter employees’ fault at all.
I felt horrible for both sides because both the drivers and the counter employees were probably making chump change for this much stress.
Unsustainable as the pay never goes up, fuel and maintenance costs go up. Cost of living goes up and competition goes up. You earn less and less while your costs go up. The company gets rich and the delivery person is pushed harder, its like a dystopian cyberpunk or black mirror storyline.
The only winning move is to never play. Might be too late though.

Why are so many people delivering takeout? The biggest reason is not that they cannot find a job, but that the salary of the job they find is similar to that of delivering food, but delivering food is more flexible!
Most delivery drivers earn between 5000-8000 yuan per month, but working in a factory also costs 5000-8000 yuan per month. Therefore, many people would rather choose a more flexible delivery driver profession!

Wow. So stressful. 😢
No delivery driver should climb stairs or take the elevator to deliver food, over and over again. That is very wearing and stressful. I was living in the Caribbean for a while. You order your food, you get a call from the driver, or you judge the time, and you go downstairs for it yourself. That constant up and down is too much for one human being.
Times are tough.
Everyone have to share.
3:00 Reminds me of Ryanair’s system, it is really horrible, the competition mindset is really bad for them.
This way of doing gig work has been a major issue globally. We see the same in the US/EU and likely in most countries where Gig work has little to no protection. People are hired as individual contractors instead of employees putting all the risk with the worker while the company who really just operates the platform makes bank. Unionization is the only way to break out of this.

Yap, as of 2024, China's gig economy is valued at approximately 3.4 trillion yuan, with the food delivery sector alone projected to reach 1.5 trillion yuan. Over 200 million workers are engaged in gig roles, representing about 25% of the total workforce.

The people who asked for deliveries should be more humane too. Don't get angry if they are just few minutes late.
Another interesting thing is that the demographic profile of gig workers is also changing. While historically dominated by young males, there is an increasing representation of women in the gig economy, now constituting over 20% of the workforce. This shift reflects broader societal changes as more women seek flexible work arrangements that allow them to balance family responsibilities with career aspirations.
I don't think they're gonna be doing motorcycle food delivery though... maybe ridesharing with a car

I am Chinese Canadian myself, and I've observed that the cultural tendency toward "fast, fast" is quite common among many people from the Orient. However, this habit can have negative consequences, often leading to a sense of hurriedness and lack of consideration for others.
Reflecting from a Western perspective, where labor standards are emphasized, I wonder how practices like these would stand up to even the minimum labor standards here. It makes me question how platforms like Amazon or Uber might operate if they weren’t held to certain labor regulations. This constant rush-especially in industries that rely on gig and delivery drivers-has real implications. How many drivers are injured or killed each year because of these pressures?
This is something we should seriously consider.
A major problem are the platforms forcing the drivers to go the extreme to deliver their stuff. Remove time limits. And stop forcing drivers to go into communities to deliver food.
too much competition, if you don't go the extra mile a different company will and you will lose your customers to them

working gig economy is not different from opening a small time business, in my opinion it's the same thing. No guarantees anywhere you eat what you earn, and you need to fight competition in any business.
gig work is meant for temp workers not to be treated as a full time career. without such delivery in the past, people survived by going out to eat or pack it themselves. isn't it better for everyone? cheaper too and less packaging used. everybody gather for lunch and dinner, people continue to interact.

In Australia, they are everywhere, choke the streets and footpaths in the cities. I have never ever used a service to have food that is cooked and cooling by the minute bought to me. I prepare every meal I eat.
I could not think of anything worse than getting 20min to an hour old food squished into a plastic container delivered to me and then expected to enjoy it.
talk about low standards......
I always praise delivery workers who comes late with at least 4 stars, the one arrives on time gets 2 stars because they do compete with others, making the air untrustful and depressing
The massive conviniency is always supported by the massive sacrifice of individual rights as skeleton and brilliant advertisement as wrapping material.
One of the business law I forgot which chapter.
Back in my days (90s) food delivery jobs were mostly part time and for young kids earning extra money.
Now it has become a primary income for a family :(
Who f’d up the system?
And here I thought the competition for software engineering jobs was bad
In Malaysia, Grab car e-hailing drivers generally earn less overall than motorcycle delivery riders. Although their daily income may be about the same, car drivers face frequent traffic jams, which increases fuel consumption, a higher expense compared to motorcycles.
