“The Shortest Straw” by Metallica Quarantine Jam

- My buddy Chris Ojeda from Byzantine reached out to see if I wanted to do a quarantine jam with him, Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves) and Phil Demmel a couple of weeks ago. When I heard it was “Shortest Straw” from Metallica off of the #AndJusticeForAll record, I jumped at the opportunity to throw bass on a track which, up until now, has been notoriously missing the bass guitar! He still needed a drummer for the jam; so, I reached out to Mike Portnoy who graciously lent his talents to the jam. HUGE thanks to Wombat for putting each of our video performances together. Thanks to John Gasper for mixing this jam for us. And, massive thanks to Tristan Hardin of The Hideout in Las Vegas for his engineering and mastering skills on this one. And, most of all, thanks to each of you for checking this video out. With everything going on in this world today, it was my hope in doing this video to give each of you a brief moment to get away from it all if even just for a bit. Worked out even better seeing that we were able to take you away for a full 6:30 on a classic, LONG Metallica song! We love you all and appreciate your support of us and for each of our bands. Shortest straw is one of those songs that the first time you listen to it you don’t really like it that much.
Then you listen to it again. And again. And again. Then you really appreciate how awesome it is. And it’s really fun to play on guitar.
Shortest straw is one of those songs that you listen by the first time and shit your pants right away. Then once you tame it you can go full hell listening to it.
That riff is soooo fun to play fr, simple yet addictive

The vocals are on point holy fucking shit this might be the best Metallica cover of all time.
This just shows you how hard this song is to actually play and how far ahead Metallica was at the time when they wrote this in the F-N 80’s. And one of Kirks best solos he ever wrote and performed

Lars pioneered it.
He’s doing triplets... a bit distracting for my taste. But it’s his flavor. He can drum. Lars isn’t the fastest by any standard or the most technical, but damn if he didn’t have a pioneering vision and he knows how to really highlight riffs in a creative and dynamic way that doesn’t overtake the other instruments, but is still badass. A lot of so-called musicians throw a lot of dirt Metallica’s way, yet hearing a good cover of a Metallica song is rare as shit. It’s not always in the how much, it’s about when and what. This cover I find tight and badass. It’s really impressive. One of the best I’ve seen imho. However, it lacks some the groove of the original. They nailed the chorus pretty good tho I found. The little delays, the little tweeks that make Metallica’s music so unique are as much in the writing as they are in the way they perform them. And playing style for me is as unique as fingerprints.
Damn! Probably the most underrated Metallica song ever covered by some of the best musicians in the industry! Great job dudes!
Imo you really can hear just how far MetallicA's skillset and technicality had evolved since KEA. And you can get an idea on how they also inspired some death metal,industrial metal, and groove metal genres. Man!nearly 40 yrs of MetallicA.....Wait didn't we just have the XXX anniversary? Gyotdamn Im getting old. Also this is my favorite MetallicA song to play on guitar. It is very aggresive,powerful and yet grooves like aged driftwood. I dont even know if that makes any damn sense, but im freaking going with it. Struggle Within is definitely underrated. (the forgotten song of the black album imo)

"And justice for all" sound has been awaken and perfecly captured in this cover. Perfect guitars, vocals and of course outstanding drums.
Exactly, this cover sounds almost the same as the original sound of "And justice for all" album by Metallica. This took me back to the eighties.

shanewoodrum If I had influence on that kinda thing, Byzantine would have been out with us a LONG time ago. Hope efforts like this that I actually CAN do shine the spotlight on Byzantine and other bands that I love and support as well.

This is fantastic! Being a massive fan of Jason Newsted back then, it feels great to hear "what could have been" on record. Never thought I'd hear an "heavier sounding" Shortest Straw song in my life. Amazing job fellas!

I may be one of the minority when it comes to this opinion. But I would love to see MetallicA end their careers with Newsted back on the bass. I love Trujillo, he added something different and in a good way. He just isnt the same stage presence as Newsted. I actually loved the moments when Newsted would rock the mic opposite of Hetfield. Creeping Death, Seek and Destroy, and Whiplash was even better live when J master Newkid would belt out those lyrics. And believe me Im happy to have Rob. But wouldnt MetallicA fans like to see the guys hire Jason back for the final run? I think it would be epic. I could be wrong though. Been known to fail at making any fargin sense when it comes to probably unrealistic bullshlaka.🤷♂️

Portnoy doesn't really groove - he's too stiff and technical of a player. And I wasn't really complaining, but anyone saying that the drumming on this cover is better than the original is an idiot - everything on the original was perfect.

@@pieruapina I played drums in a band in the mid 90's. All our own songs, no covers - meaning I was 100% responsible for the drums on all songs. We did a few live shows, made a couple of demo tapes.
That was over 20 years ago.
It would take me quite a few months of intensive practicing to be able to do the drums on those songs again today...
If Lars needed any number of go's to get the intro right, that does not only seem likely but also understandable.

Imagine how good Justice would have been had it been mixed properly, genuinely IMO the best Metallica album as a whole. Metallica shot themselves in the foot by trying to trash Jason
Its the most brutal Metallica album and my personal favorite. Jason playing this live makes the songs so much more aggressive with his backing vocals, too. I love Rob, but I still think of Cliff and Jason when I think of Metallica.
I honned my metal ear on this sound. I still feel Justice has an evil eerie sound, with no mids. Feels very aggressive. I always loved it. Very unique. Like from another world. Bassline follows rhythm guitar almost exactly. So, there are the tales that they turned it down in the mix but I always thought we felt it in the low end of the guitar riff, giving guitars an unatural heaviness. Every time I hear a new mix with added bass, I feel the particula sound of justice falls apart and it becomes less grandiose.
