This was my favourite piece to play as an adolescent & i learned to play it quite well, thanks to my grandmother, a concertpianist & my first teacher! Beautiful Virtuosa Hélène GRIMAUD! Merci !!! *-*
I've never been to any piano lesson and I can play all the notes accurately in 2 weeks time. But as Thomas said, to play it musically is another story!!
This is lovely. Yes, slower than many would do it, but all the more reflective and meditative. It would be a pity if all music was played at a fixed metronome rate!
@@FS02012 whatever you don't play have to play it exactly as written...i agree with the commenter this is the perfect speed after going through like 5 other pianists who just zoomed through it
@@FS02012 Allegro of the Baroque period is not the Allegro of today and Bach didn't even include tempo marks so there is plenty of room for interpretation on how fast to play those 16th notes. The half notes in the bass line alone tell you that there is supposed to be like a sustained pedal tone sound. One of the reasons pedal tones were so popular then was because of the lack of pedal on keyboard instruments like the harpsichord. If you write a piece that needs resonance, chances are it's not one you zoom through. So in spite of the 16th notes I would submit that the half notes are enough for me to slow it down and make it more resonant. But like I said, Bach left a lot of room for interpretation as tempo marks were added much later by editors. So we can't say it has to be played one way or another. Interpretation in itself is what adds to the artistry.
Just know that you are correct... using the pedal is the only proper way for that arrangement. Just as she uses the correct tempo as well... too many interpretations rush the tempo far past reason. Regards, Mishka
Bach's music is often very contrapuntal, and pedal, if not used very carefully, can blur the melodic lines. But this piece is not contrapuntal, so pedal, in my opinion and Helene Grimaud's, works really well!
Lmfao, using pedals is not correct at all.. You can do it if you really want to. After all, I'm not going to stop you from making eclectic performances, but to pretend it's correct to put a brick on the pedal is just a failure of understanding baroque music and a (very) bad reading of Bach's autograph.
Awesome interpretation, beautiful. I love also the sound of this piano, I wonder if someone knows the brand. Sounds close to a Stainway, but I think is not.
For me, Bach is not a single composer. I have long felt that hidden in many of Bach's compositions there are multiple characters lurking, waiting for the right instrumentalist to bring them to life. I have just listened to Gould's 1960 recording of Partitas 1 and 2, and the contrast with Grimaud's style of interpretation is in some ways quite stark - but both are, in their own way, just sublime. One could perhaps say that Gould finds Bach the perfectionist, and Grimaud exhibits the emotion hidden in his compositions. I feel that there are not that many pianists who can do justice to Bach. These two are among them.
@@marksmith3947 until ten minutes ago I had not. I have just listened to the first few preludes and fugues from wtc 1. Presuming that the pianist is able to render Bach in the technical sense, the greatest challenge is timing. Metronomic delivery is not wrong, but provides little emotion. Rubato is possible, but the use of rubato in Bach requires an incredible feel for the inherent timing of the piece - something which quite apparently most musicians do not have. Feinberg applies rubato, at times to quite an extreme degree, but amazingly his sense of the timing of the pieces allows him to not only get away with it but to provide (at times) the most amazingly emotive rendering. Suffice it to say that I will be listening to more of his recordings, as far as they are available (fifties and sixties it seems, fortunately fairly well recorded for the time)
The Sacred Temperament: Borrow to me, Holy God, your kindness, thus my singing is certainly done quite well; thus it sounds beautiful in my song, and I pray you in spirit and truth on; thus your spirit raises my heart up to you, that I sing Psalms for you at the height of Chor. In the beginning was the Note.
I know when Hélène plays this song, it will have the spirituality. She plays it better in 2020... I wonder why her best playing I heard is Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement but it is not on iTunes... I'd say her Moonlight is the top 3 in the world
Obviously, she is very good. The only hold back is the lack of joy towards the end. Bach dedicated his music to his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. This particular piece calls for that joy and peace in the last two measures that Bach experienced in his attempt to understand when Jesus rose into heaven
Nice rendition.......... If you love this piece, you should check out "Nick Vassallo Plays" for another extremely nice interpretation of the C Major Bach prelude. A perfect piece of music.
This is so beautifull...and Bach is smiling in heaven...
The best version I have heard.
Tempo magnifique ! On entend toutes les notes!
Merci Mme.
I love the way she handled the dynamics in this version
Absolutely lyrical, stunning, and passionate!!!!!!
I understand You. This melody, this piece is ideal, clear and very calme, and at the same time is under time, universal, under style. Perfect.
Can't stop listening to this piece. Superb !
Very nice to hear her playing - it's just the right speed!
So beautifully played, very beautiful photo of her, she is so special in an ordinary way.
It is difficult to play this “accessible” piece and sound this musical, especially at slow tempo. Beautiful. Chapeau
Its such a beautiful soft and even flow. No rush, just floating energy
Thank you for this everlasting beautifulness , moving sound
Such a perfect piece perfectly played.

So talented. Her phrasing is perfect.
Gorgeous! Bravo for Grimaud and Bach
Brano molto famoso che secondo me esprime gioia pace e serenità. Eccellente interpretazione.
Brava. ❤️.

Such a beautiful and unique interpretation. I’d like to be able to play it like this.
Wow! Amazing. On est transportés au-dessus de tout.
Beautiful. My favorite.
She is simply perfect.
Simply beautiful.
The ending caught me by surprise. Wow.
The most perfect piece of music ever writen and such a good performance.

Beautiful
Great !!!
Everyone thinks this must be played 100mph. Nice to hear it done with some touch.
Totally agree!
It's because it's written as 1/8 of a note so of course you to play it fast and move on to the next nose as fast as possible

Talent and Beauty.......

Beautiful!
Vraiment magnifique.
Magnifiquement bien jouée!!!

Linda versão, obrigado por postar.❤❤❤
Beautiful. Wonderful to hear a top pianist shamelessly using the sustaining pedal in Bach
I wonder why many people suggest to not use pedal for Bach piece. I played that song an posted it in a piano blog and got the same comment.

I love it so much better at a slower tempo..
C'est la meilleure version.
Et de très très loin.
Beautifully played, I've been listening to lang's version lately and I like it, this one is very nice too.
more nice because the soulful way of a lady is to hear
This is just beautiful!
A very romantic piece. The slower it is played the more romantic it gets.
Grazie per l'anima pura ! 🙏
parfait
My piano teacher and I are working on this now. Nice,

Lovely
As good as it gets!
COMPLIMENTI!!!
Bach composed partly with modern harmonics, that we today are quite familiar with, just like the F major7 tones, near the end of this lovely piece.
This is such a beautiful piece. Perhaps taken a bit slow, still very expressive and moving.
This make me crazy because of the sostenuto pedal !
This is not on the Credo album as a bonus track. It is on the Bachs 50 Masterworks Album available on MP3
👏👏👏💐💐💐...

wonderful - interesting how she gets loude at the end - my sheet music has it quieter.
Anyone else's?
It's Bach, he didn't write any dynamics. Any markings you have in your score are editor's.
