      My car actually has a similar arrangement. The main power wire coming from the battery is actually a fusible link, so in the event of something melting down *hard* (which I've had happen when the alternator failed short circuit), that chunk of wire will melt and sacrifice itself for the rest of the car. That being said, I don't think this thing is that...

      Such a wire that ‘sacrifices itself’ can cause a fire. I think that’s how a lot of car fires start. The wire from the alternator you the battery should be quite thick, so I wouldn’t like it to burn. Or maybe I’m missing something.

      @@Conservator. i think in theory you are right. I don't actuslly know where the sacrificial link is, but I'm assuming its made a certain way so that it can melt and break the connection in a controlled way. The problem with DC after all is that there is no zero crossing point. So if something arcs over, that fucker will keep going as long as it wants. You need a way to break that fault current.
      Maybe I can take a look at the loom in the old car-I believe it sits in between the alternator and the battery.
      The important thing to note is that it is a factory wiring loom, and it is there for safety. There are many other fusible links in the car (as well as self-resetting circuit breakers) which are designed for things which are allowed to draw a higher than wire rating current for a short time, i.e. surge currents, think about things like the lights, or the thermo fans. Things which draw huge amounts of inrush current but then tail off. You wouldn't want the fuse popping every time you turned the lights on, and plugging your laptop charger into the wall etc. can draw many dozens of amps for a very short time, which doesn't even give the wire time to blink much less heat up.
      But sorry for getting off track. The main tldr thing is that this fusible link isn't just two cheap normal hookup wires thst will burn in an overload. Its very likely a special type of wire which is designed to fail in a controlled way, and is designed to be present in the car to try to save the car from electrical fires.

      My first comment was meant as a joke.
      For large inrush currents you have slow fuses but as far as I know all automotive fuses are slow.
      In a car you don’t want any wire to act like fuse.

    I've got the same unstable signal 19:32. I did not know that playing with the trigger mode can stablize the signal. Thank you I've learn something today. Looking forward to your next videos with more tips how to use the oscillopscope. Seeing the waveform is really fun.

    I bought a china drill because it had the same batteries as my impact gun but cost less than batteries on their own. The drill works really good

    The listing says "brushless" because the brushed motor is probably so crappy, the brushes will run out within minutes of operating ;-)

    Philips back in the mid-80s made a rechargeable razor which charged from 110 or 220 mains voltage and I believe it used an ASIC to do the job. Charging only took fifteen minutes and it flashed a green LED when it was done.

    Brilliant video,thank, I have a power supply just like this one,unfortunately it broke, they are very cheap so it didn't matter, but I wanted to know why mine didn't work, I couldn't find anything obviously wrong so I assumed it was the chip. You mention there is no snubber circuit, that makes sense as to why mine stopped working, thanks again great video

    Lol i got the same looking drill charger. But this one using type C plug.
    Also has some printing below the caution.
    Doliz Li-Ion Charger.
    Model 18C215-100SL
    Input 100-240V 50/60hz
    Output 21V-800mA
    Same looking and the same flimsy cable. I always feels scary when using this charger.
    Tho being said, i didn't try to pry open the device. So, not sure whether it is completely same or not.
    The battery looks like housing 5 cells, it said 21V 1.5Ah.
    Lithium power, at least not Flithium.
    It might be dodgy as well ? Idk.
    One local youtuber has been to the factory of this brand.
    And it has authorized service center, in my country. I've tried to phone them.
    The drill itself is quite nice, i mean it works. I've just use it to drill my wall to screw battery-less door bell.

    Incredibly bad false advertising but also incredibly good value to get a working drill with 2 balanced protected batteries and a real planetary gearbox for just 45$. Some home improvement store would give you "rechargeable" 24v Alkali-Mangane batteries which only do 5 cycles or so.

    What is the purpose of air-gap in these transformers?
    Is it to increase saturation point? Increase reluctance? Decreases the effective permeability of the core, or permeability?
    When are air-gaps used? Why flyback converters need an air gap?
    So many questions, so little answers that don't lead to even more questions :(

      It's to prevent it from going into saturation at which point it is no longer inductive but only resistive.

      He has a few patreons that easily allow him to buy better equipment but I think it’s a fun challenge for himself to do as much as possible with low/no budget equipment.
      I cannot speak for him “of courrrse” but I like his approach.

    What terminates the charging? Is it the charger, or is there some circuitry in the battery pack? Neither... The LED goes green and then you unplug it!

      All the battery management is inside the pack.

      @@chrisg6597 There are some products where it is, even using the protection circuit of the cell (when a protected cell is used). This is what they rely on on for changing the colour of the charging LED.

      @@threeMetreJim I must admit, I was quite surprised that the off load voltage of the charger in the video wasn't slightly higher, and as you say, use the over-voltage protection to terminate the charge. In this case I don't think the off load voltage is high enough for this to happen, so there will be a constant (somewhat low) trickle current. Continuous trickle current or over-voltage is hardly good for longevity of the cells however.

      @@chrisg6597 One of the older models by 'Sealey' (one using 21 and 5 single leds) uses this method for charge termination (and it isn't a cheap brand). It relies on the protection circuitry of the cell inside, the charger changes the led colour once current is no longer being drawn. I only know that as had one to repair after someone burnt out the charging resistors using a charger that was of the wrong voltage - the second time it happened I refused to repair it, they decided to switch on the LED's while charging, blowing most of them as well as seriously damaging the board from burnt resistors.

    I've seen that jittering triggering before on power supplies with really high dv/dt stuff going on, a snubber across the primary would probably solve it.

    I opened up my makita drill and charger was only transformer with rectifier. There was 4 batteries in series with no electronics on the side what so ever. There was only 1 button for on and off.

    What's the max input voltage of that tiny scope? If it's not attenuated, you'd think that flyback voltage would damage it.

    I'm curious what you think about your new digital oscilloscope. Perhaps a topic for a future video? I was looking at the same model on AliExpress/eBay as it is the lowest cost DSO that has MHz bandwidth -- but I hesitated buying it because the probes might suck, or the DSO software might be terrible, etc...

    Is this a "universal voltage" charger? Did you test it on EU mains or you had a 110V stepdown somewhere? Maybe it behaves differently depending on the input voltage!

    all charging base stations just provide power well almost all.. what shuts off and balancces the pack when charging is the bms on the battery... now milwakee does not have a bms in any battery its in the tools reason why they are expensive its a ploy by th ecompany to make sure they can charge alot.. dont belive me crack open a battery reason 2 companies do this theres another one that i dont remember who.. is you dont buy batts often for years so to make sure they make money they put the bms to justify the prices.. if investigated etc... now ryobi and ridgid have bms in the batts... you can use the batts from these 2 companies for projects without worry a milwakee i woulndt theres no protection.. so the milawakee chargers why they are so expensive they have the chip in them....
    so unless crack open a battery and see a tryiac or a mosfet minimum 2 of them on a heat sink then its not a bms its just a monitoring device see you need big mosfets to cut the power to the battery when they run low... we are talking 10-50 amps so if you crak a battery open and you just see tiny chips dont use it as a project dont belive me crack open a m12 battery theres nothing but 18650s in it.... crack open a ridgid battery and youll see big mosfets on it it cuts off the battery.. and wont let it cut back on until you charge it.. reason being you let the battery voltage climb by stopping the tool then you can keep doing this and screw the battery its how ridgid offers lifetime warranties on batts its a stipulation on how you get them that and slippage meaning they hope youll forget about the warranty and or the cost to ship it and go buy another batt...... ave did a piece on this.... so only buy ridgid or ryobi..... im not sure about other brands.. but i personally have ryobi batts the new ones the hp ones and thats a gimic too all hp batts are are 2 more tabs and the onboard electronics say hey im in a brushless and let you use the full ammount see some 18650s one cell can handle 20 amps mac for 5 seconds and 5 per cell for constant do that over a pack and you got your 50 amps to start up that blower or that drill for that split second... long story short this is why

    Would never pass a CE safety test with a transformer like that. Funny thing is you need to perform the same sort of safety tests and pass them to sell your equipment in to china !!! Don't you just love it.

    Great teardown. Got to love the Chinese with their trickery and false marketing ;).
    The charger is just as bad as the batteries and drill :D only really worth salvaging the components (except you can get better quality 18650s from scavenged laptop battery packs).

    2:13 Key word is "looks". The fact that the gearbox is PLASTIC means its complete junk. Id be even surprised if they sprung for sintered metal gears. Id bet its just a nylon ring gear pressed into the faux silver painted plastic housing with some cheap nylon planets, and a brass or powdered metal pinion gear. Edit: 4:30 Yeah its all plastic. That wont last long...
