    This is the best account I've seen yet. The passenger stayed very calm. This is unreal!! If I had watched the plane land and not known that someone with no flight experience landed it I would have said it was a very near perfect landing!! Fantastic! I have no experience in the field of aviation and it is certain that I would not have kept my calm so much, between two "mayday" I would have made a small crisis of tears, of nerves, tried to shake the poor pilot and then listened to the ATC. I would have listened if the plane had not crashed before...in short, bravo for this passenger!

  • @zidoocfi

    I have multiple thoughts but here will restrict to just a couple for the sake of brevity.
    First -- it appears that when the pilot first became unconscious (?), the airplane made a diving right turn from which the passenger recovered on his own before ever calling ATC. Great job by the passenger in doing so, and if that's what happened I almost can't believe he sounded as calm as he did when he called. That diving turn would also be the probable explanation for the request about the nav screen being blank, but I can't be sure.
    Second -- In my opinion, the first controller got very lucky that the autopilot was off when he told the passenger to push on the controls and begin the descent. If the autopilot had been on, it likely would have "fought" the push on the controls and the result could have been fatal. I'm thrilled beyond belief that everything turned out okay, but for a controller to tell someone how to manipulate the controls without knowing the autopilot status is very dangerous.
    Full disclosure -- I am a controller and a flight instructor myself. (My comments reflect my personal opinions and do NOT represent official FAA policy. I am speaking in a private capacity here).

    • @KuostA
      @KuostA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you're right. i agree 100%. valid point. the controller telling him to just push without ascertaining his skill level, AP state, aircraft state, etc etc etc was so reckless and out of line and unnecessary. wut if the pax put the plane in a big dive he couldnt pull out of? first measure should have been to stabilize the a/c, not ask him to descend and then maintain specific altitudes the whole way while having him input diff frequencies etc............

    • @Ash-cy7yw
      @Ash-cy7yw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I suspect most ATC are not actually pilots themselves. So instead of leaving as criticizing the Controller, perhaps there should be some discussion on what training is given to all ATC about their giving advice in this situation should they ever get this call. Are they told nit to give any advice until a skilled piloting individual arrives to the tower?

    • @surrealtom
      @surrealtom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Another thing to note is that the controller requested the pilot to change the radio frequency... This could've resulted in a complete loss of comms, which is definitely a less-than-ideal situation.

    • @KuostA
      @KuostA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@surrealtom ikr. controller is not very intelligent, based off his active decision making alone

    • @surrealtom
      @surrealtom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@KuostA I think it mostly comes down to lack of experience in similar situations and lack of experience as a pilot. It could've gone very bad if the pilot had lost comms or fucked around with the autopilot, but thankfully it didn't happen. Hope they incorporate more ATC training for similar emergencies

    • @shreddder999

      @@kineticgames293 he should never have introduced the subject of changing the frequency. Why do the ground guys (tower, ATC, whomever) seem to insist on speaking pilot-speak, and why do they ask the non-pilot to change frequencies? And no, I'm not asking why those protocols exist. I'm asking why the grounders speak a language that non-pilots probably won't understand (what is an Ident? what is a squawk? what is a transponder?) and why on earth would you want the passenger to mess with the communications controls and so risk a loss of those communications because the passenger has no idea what he/she is doing?
