    My take aways from this: Shop with the end in mind! Meal plan and prep when you get it home! Tell grocers why you don't shop there, tell them what they're doing right, too! Use your skills to repurpose things you already own! And, have fun...love your enthusiasm!!

    First video I've seen from you and so far I'm loving it. You make zero waste seem more relatable and accessable since your apartment doesn't look super sleek and you're not lightening years away from others on their zero waste journey. Your story on how you came across the zero waste is how I came across the movement.

    You are amazing! I found your channel through searches about women being okay with their body hair, but the more videos I watch, the more I want you to be my best friend! I am on a very similar journey, with minimalism, body acceptance, and self-betterment. Keep doing what you are doing; you rock!

      +Michelle Sprague Ah Michelle, this made my morning! When I started on this journey I wasn't sure if I would find a lot of women/girls who would be into videos about periods, body stuff and everything else. But I'm realizing that almost everyone is into it! Thanks for your awesome comment!

    You made me LOL when you said you walked into your house and said "Look at all this stuff!" and during the videos. I've done the same thing after watching minimalist videos on youtube! Yet somehow it all comes back into the house eventually. I'm having to purge everything in our house every couple of months - I guess that's life with kids!

    Love this video! Brought up things I even forgot where I was wasteful in my lifestyle - such as meal prep...I buy groceries and then forget to make actuall meals with them! shame on me. But I am getting better in other aspects of my life. very minimal. I dont have multiple products for makeup/hair but the ones I need, I use reusable menstrual products, buy things at thrift stores! I love living green!

    I slowly reduce my west but I'm sometimes still confused with what I can recycle and what not. Is there any list of item that shows that ? For example, I didn't know that I can't recycle receipts ore sticker. I'm also confused with plastic. How to know with plastic its recyclable and with not ? Any tips ?

    • @FemmeHead
      @FemmeHead  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +nissiax83 Frustrating isn't it? I'm still learning myself. What is recyclable really depends on your location. Try to Google the local rules to what can be recycled.

      +nissiax83 My city just recently sent out a postcard with a list of things to not put in the recycle bin and besides obvious things it said no plastic bags, and no glass jars with the lid still on it, or things that is mixed materials like plastic/paper packaging still together, like you have to separate it. hope that helps some!

I really enjoyed your video explaining how you transitioned into having a zero waste lifestyle. +Kailey Maskell I used to keep all of my shopping bags and I still do. But now I take them to a non profit thrift store in my area that reuses bags that people donate for their store so that they do not have to buy bags. So they become valuable for other people and do not create waste in my home.l I don't know if that will help you at all.

    • @kenbob1071
      @kenbob1071 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kailey Maskell
      I used to collect those plastic shopping bags too. Had a huge plastic garbage bag stuffed full of smaller plastic (and paper) bags in the event that I might someday need them. One day I just got tired of looking at it in my closet and thought, "If I haven't used 95% of these things in years, it's not likely I will ever use them all." I kept just a few bags and recycled the rest at the store (of course now I avoid plastic and paper all together). The extra space made me feel good and made me rethink other collections of useless stuff I had accumulated. It kind of snowballed from there. In the grand scheme of the Universe, material things we collect are not important. Best to live gently upon this earth.

    I wouldnt call myself a minimalist (having a family of four, I find it so hard to minimalize our household things) but seeing what amount of thigs u have in your closet, your room etc I think I am a pretty good minimalist already lol Must be a culture thing, too, as I often watch videos of English-speaking youtubers having plenty of stuff in their house and I (living in germany) wouldn´t even know how to fit all those things into my home :D Live ur videos, ur such an intelligent, pretty woman and I am learning a lot from you. I have mason jars but cannot find a store that will let me use them to buy my bulk items even when I bring an additional one that is identical for subtracting weight and keep it empty. Sprouts doesn't. The only store near me I have not tried that has bulk is Whole Foods. Do they allow mason containers? Stores don't seem to have the ability to subtract the jar weight after weighing food products so how do you use these when shopping?

      Katy Kehle you're right, it is recycled. But plastic as a molecule, or whatever you want to call it, never fully decomposes. So purchasing plastic, even if it is recycled, still creates waste.

    Hey Victoria! I love the way you talk, like you're saying everything that comes to mind. I just checked out your instagram and noticed you're vegan and in to travelling. I've been vegan the last 2 years and am looking in to how I can go zero waste too :) I don't have my own place as of yet although it may be possible by April yay so hopefully soon I will have more control over my environment. (Then in the future I want to build a tiny house! Have you seen those?) I'm also looking to go travelling either at the end of 2016 or 2017 after I've trained to be an outdoor sports instructor. It's awesome to find someone who's in to all this stuff! If you ever want someone to go on an excited rant with about how cool all this is message me!

      +CloudChalk This comment made my day! I had a good laugh when you said you wanted to build a tiny house because I do too!! I go around my days and point out all of the different things you could convert into tiny homes haha. And trying to live zero waste is definitely harder when you live with others, believe me, but I just try to focus on the things that I purchase and consume. That's all you can really do, and just hope that it is a good influence on those around you and they'll want to pick up the habit.

      I was so happy to hear her say Hyvee too! I returned about 6 weeks ago from a couple of months in SW Iowa, and I cherish every little memory from there. I absolutely loved Iowa and was shocked at what a wonderful place it is. I wish I had been born and raised there. I was raised in a crappy inner city and continued living in cities throughout my adulthood. I also vacationed in cities for the most part (even when I went on overseas trips), with only brief stays in smaller/country places - not long enough to get a real feel for them. City crime and grime made me think that the whole world just sucked, which led me to decide not to have a family. I realized in Iowa that there are some great places/people left, and, sadly, that I would have had 3-4 kids had I been raised there. I am 43 (will be 44 in July). :( Anyway, sorry about giving you my life story... I just loved hearing her say Hyvee too because it reminded me of Iowa. I can't wait to go back there.

    We buy meat not in bulk but like maybe 2 lbs at a time. It's just my husband and I so I have to portion it out and freeze it. I can't figure out how to freeze it without using plastic portion bags and then freezer bags. It seems so wasteful to me. Grrr.

      +Vanessa “Vanito” Campa Maybe you could use reusable containers that can be washed and then re-used. I don't eat meat but its what I do with my vegan burger patties :-)

      +Vanessa “Vanito” Campa Can you wrap it in waxed paper instead?

    • @acmulhern
      @acmulhern 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Divide it into separate tupperwares or reusable jars. This also works for fish. The key is to make sure it's something you can clean and reuse over and over again and preferably out of glass. This also makes it less toxic :)

      I just buy small portions and cook it the same day I buy it or the next day. That way I don't have to even bother with freezing.

    Haven't you thought about becoming a vegan? You can save 5 mln liters of water a year just by not consuming meat. You save on electricity because you are eating more raw fruits and vegetables. you help environment with less packaging. And if you do it right your health will improve as well.

      I find that living green/gently is living healthy. I walk or bike 3 miles (round trip) to the grocery store several times a week and buy only what I need. I plan my meals so as to limit waste and refrigerator clutter. I'm not vegan, but I think of meat as an accompaniment or flavoring to dishes rather than the main star. I eat small portions, try to avoid sugar and processed foods.
      What a wonderful, healthy world we'd have if people cut back on rampant consumption and materialism.

    • @kdoisa
      @kdoisa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if you're using meat as condiment, you could freely avoid it if you wanted

    • @kenbob1071
      @kenbob1071 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I flavor my meals with a wide variety of spices and herbs too, so I guess you could consider those to be "condiments" as well, and thus freely avoided, but meals would be bland and boring without them. I'm not against people eating animal products as long as it's done in moderation with sustainability and respect for nature in mind.

      Ken Bob I see. As for me, I understood throughout the years that it is actually the meat that needs all those herbs and veggies to gain some taste and has no taste by its own. But it is just for me.

      I wouldn't say that's been my experience with meat. Some meats, in fact, have too strong of a flavor for my tastes (e.g., lamb, liver, etc.), while others merely require a little salt (which is actually a flavor enhancer and not a spice) to bring out the taste.
      In any event, I think the world could use more vegans.

    It seriously repuslses me just how wasteful and careless people are. we dont need nearly as much as what most of us have, yet how easily we throw things things away disgusts me! nothing has to be trash...anything we no longer want can easily be useful for someone else

    • @KellyS_77

      +Brian Wood Not "expire" per se, but ground spices definitely lose their potency/strength over time. Whole spices will last for years, as long as you store them properly.
