Oregon Inlet Campground was our third National Seashore Campground on this trip up the Outer Banks, and it did not disappoint. The biggest difference is that this campground has electric and water sites on one side of the campground. The weather at the end of May was perfect, so we were totally fine boondocking. In the 3 weeks we were in the Outer Banks, we never had to run our generator once!
Camping in Oregon Inlet was the perfect location to take a trip out to Bodie Lighthouse. Just like all of the other lighthouses we visited in the OBX, Bodie has an incredible history including the fact that this was actually the third Bodie Lighthouse build in this spot! If you do take a trip out to this lighthouse, be sure to sign up for the lighthouse tour well in advanced (it was over a 2 hour wait when we were there) and walk out along the boardwalk to the marshes!
This spot also was close enough to drive to Roanoke Island and check out where the Lost Colony was…well, lost! The history behind these 117 colonists that went missing with absolutely no trace is facinating and the Visitor Center there was stunning. The Lost Colony drama that is put on in the park each summer hadn’t started yet when we were visiting, but if you get a chance, we have heard it is a great show!
The hidden gem of this trip up the islands was our stop in Manteo, North Carolina, where there is a cute little downtown with shops, restaurants and hotels right on the water next to a marina. There is also a little lighthouse that you can walk out to on the bay with a free museum at the bottom. Our favorite part was the boardwalk that follows along the water for what appears to be close to a mile with built-in benches along the walkway. This sweet little town is a place we could picture ourselves living. It was so perfect looking, we almost felt like we were in the movie, The Truman Show!

Man-tee-oh as we Virginian’s pronounce it, I saw the Roanoke play 47 years ago, I think I enjoyed it. I was in a motel with my family on Ocracoke in August of 1986, when I got the call from American Airlines that they wanted me to come fly for them. We loved that ferry ride too, lots of good memories! I was a 10 year Army pilot then but was able to get discharged an report to American starting school in October. Spent 17 years flying for them.
So cool to hear how different people pronounce all of these places! Someone from NC told us it was pronounced a different way! What a cool place to get such a great call! Thank you so much for your service! 🇺🇸
@@FindingOurSomeday They probably pronounced it "Manny-oh" because North Carolinians don't pronounce the "t." And it is BOW-dee (bow as in bow and arrow). But my fave NC place name not spelled as it's pronounced is Conetoe. (Scroll down for the pronunciation.

BOH-dee Island lighthouse - Legend is that it was named after the many bodies that washed ashore from centuries of shipwrecks in the Outer Banks' Graveyard of the Atlantic. Locals didn't want to discourage people from coming so changed the pronunciation. Manteo - man-tee-ow is on Roanoke Island in Dare County. The Lost Colony is the longest-running (85th year) outdoor drama in the US. Cro-a-tan or “Croatoan” was the name of an island south of Roanoke, now Hatteras Island, which at that time, was home to a Native American tribe of the same name. Supposidly White found the word "Croatoan" carved into a post and "Cro" etched into a tree with no trace of the village. Always love to see you traveling and learning new things! Seeing you on the coast in NC is so exciting... Can hardly wait for your next adventure!
We were worried that we were pronouncing it wrong so we looking it up and it said that it was actually pronounced "body" but we didn't see that it had been changed because of the history of the name! Next time we will just ask some locals! Though I do think it is funny that people from Virginia pronounce the names different than people from NC! WE have gotten three different pronunciations for Manteo! We are excited to go back and see The Lost Colony next time! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
The "T" in Manteo is actually silent. Lol Manny-o. And Bah-dee is correct. The Native Americans may have said Cro-ah-toe-in. But we say Cro-uh-tan.

Body is actually correct, y’all have it right. I lived on Hatteras Island in Salvo for 15 years, and was born in Currituck. Locals of the OBX will definitely correct you if you call it Bow-dee.
This video and the last few have been such a trip down memory lane. My parents took me tent camping at the Hatteras KOA as a little kid, and we did week-long house rentals in the Outer Banks several times in my teens and twenties. I have seen most of these sights but your videos are fun and fresh anyway.

I totally agree about OBX being a wonderful place to visit. It’s beautiful and yes, lots of family and free things to do!! If y’all get back to the area the Elizabethan Gardens, right next to the Lost Colony, are lovely. We love going to lighthouses and have seen so many on the East Coast; esp New England. Maine is one of our favorite places!! I hope y’all were able to make it to Assateague Island NS. We’ve been to both ends and loved it. The horses are so fun and bring a smile to my face every time!! @@FindingOurSomeday when you went to Ocracoke , did you get to visit the old graveyards...back in 1700s and 1800s, whole families buried next to each other. I took pictures of the graves and came home and researched it. I just recently discovered your videos. I love Corey's awesome photography and your videos make me feel like one of the family. Its always been a dream of mine to RV , but I am old lady now and don't think I could talk my cats into it. Thanks for sharing your adventures

@@FindingOurSomeday If they had starved to death, there would be a pile of bones lying around or such.
Or they got hit hard by a hurricane. That area would flood badly if I am not mistaken. I cat 4 or 5 would have wiped them out and washed them out to sea.
As you learned, the entire Outer Banks is amazing. It is just so different than anywhere I have ever been. The Lost Colony play is definitely worth seeing. And you can stay almost anywhere in OBX and enjoy the rest. You should also check out the Southern Outer Banks - Morehead City, Beaufort, Emerald Isle, and others. Also a great experience, just not as remote.
There’s definitely a lot more of the coast we need to explore, we need to go back for the lost colony play!
Love the OBX. Hope you get up to Kitty Hawk and the Dunes, Duck, Corolla, ,Currituck Lighthouse and Carova to see the wild horses. A lot of history in the OBX.

30 years ago, Andy Griffith used to promote and actually perform in the Lost Colony play. Man-te-o, not Matao... I would also suggest Beaufort/Morehead City, NC area, and take the ferry to Cape Lookout Lighthouse. The distinctive patterns on the NC lighthouses were to allow sailors to know where they were since all of the lighthouses looked alike when built. Currituck, in Corolla, NC is the only one that was unpainted
100% agree on the storm scenario. They didn’t see storms like we have here not built to withstand those winds. Left on a ship and it went down. The ships name was the name left on the plaque.

When you come back through and visit again, you need to see the Lost Colony….it’s an awesome experience. And I’m loving this series of your trip. I’m so glad you’re having a great time.

That vine is called a scuppernong vine. Us southerners use it just like a grape(eat it or make wine from it).
One more to add to the bucket list. Its thd worst when you try to fill up & it cuts yiu off. I was in Fl & it cut off at $50, boy was that a lot of resting (44 gal tank).

(Year 1565) Forty-two years before the English colonized Jamestown and fifty-five years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, the Spanish established at St. Augustine this nation's first enduring settlement. That is right! We love visiting the Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine. I guess they are counting Jamestowns as the first permanent English settlement. The history in St Augustine is amazing!
My daughter was a performer in the Lost Colony show. She loved her time in the Outer Banks. We loved the show and it’s well worth seeing!!

Great video I have lived in the province of British Columbia my whole life, the temperate rain forest we have on much of the coast is so different to what you have on the east coast. The beaches are to die for and the lighthouses are just beautiful.

In Delaware "book" or "book'n it" is normal speed you can "step it up" which means "put yer foot in it" and go or your "flat out" or "cook'n" or "haul'n butt" which is the PG/family friendly version of the saying. Then again my Maine roots from Aroostook County specifically Fort Kent/Presque Isle may make me a tad different! I like the videos and stay safe guys!

Late 1400's the Portuguese and Spanish set up places in Florida by the early 1500 they had wars between settlements of French, Spain and Portuguese. St Augustine was a colony and officially founded in 1565 but existed before that. The parks sadly often have incorrect and made up information. Columbus knew to miss the Sargasso sea from others that had traveled it before. Much of Columbus's notes have been translated from Portuguese (not Italian he did not speak Italian) but instead there are stories taught that do not include his notes. If you ever travel to Portugal you can travel to the towns the Islands "they discovered" are named after. Be safe.

Man! We even looked this one up! The original pronunciation is actually "body" because of the bodies that washed up there on shore from the Graveyard of the Atlantic, but after a while the locals didn't like the connotation of that name so they started to call it Bowdie instead. Next time we just need to ask a local! 😂We had such a blast in the Outer Banks and we can't wait to go back!

Brings back a lot of memories. My dad worked for the park service in the summer of 85&86. The first year on ocracoke and the second in Buxton. I was 14-15 and had the run of the place. So many things have changed but many things are very similar.
those are either scuppernong or muscadine vines(types of grapes) probably. they need to be trimmed and cut back, also they do sometimes skip years and don't produce.
Costco had the pumps cut off for diesel @ 175. Super fun filling the truck and needing to reset it to get 40+ gals. They now cut off at $225
So frustrating that some of these gas stations didn't change their cut off prices when gas rose so much. $75 cap is ridiculous.

Just a side note, from a southern girl from North Carolina, the town's name Manteo is pronounced "Man-knee-oh" . 😄 Did you catch a glimpse of the wild horses? You actually were near the Mother Vine, the 400 year old (oldest) grape vine in North America. Some Trivia - the power company almost killed it a while back when they were spraying non-selective herbicide and the vine had spread quite far.
We heard about Mother Vine but weren't able to get there to see it. This vine was a pleasant surprise! So glad it didn't die!
OBX is definitely on our list.
Last week we just got back from your home town. We did a New Hampshire and Maine trip. We was in the White Mountains and continued on to the Maine coast. Absolutely beautiful up there.
We was up at 430am to watch the sunrise at Old Orchard Beach and had sunrise and donuts...

I've been loving you outer banks videos. I spent a few summer's at my Uncles house in Maneto ( pronunced Man t o ) he took me to the "lost Coloney" in the early 70s, It was a exciting experience, out door drama starting around dusk something special about that time of day. My expierence was back in the day long before vidoe \ and live productions was not a common everyday experience (not all households had color tvs, let alone 2+ TVs). It was magical..... Your videos are expectional, I appricate the detail you provide and the time you spend producing them shows thru. Thanks for sharing!

Love it that you knew how to pronounce Bodie. Most people don’t. Years ago when I was young we may have seen the lost colony, but I really don’t recall. We usually went there off-season. Y’all really showed a lot of Roanoke island that I didn’t know about. Loving all of your videos from “The Banks”.
It is funny how many locals have called us out on the pronunciation! We looked it up to make sure we knew how to say it but it was changed by locals many years ago because of the bad connotation with the first name! Even the names of places have fascinating histories!

So glad you visited Bodie Island. The Mother Vine in Manteo (Man-T-Oh) is a cool thing to visit too. The Lost Colony play is very good-do plan to come back to see it when you return to climb the Cape Hatteras light someday. As for the Lost Colony, there is some evidence that suggests the descendants of that colony actually wound up living on Harkers Island, farther south below Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands. The older folks here on the island still speak the Queen's English. Look up the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. It documents the history of all the Down East communities of Carteret County and might be a useful source of info.

The Algonquins, being friendly, came for a visit. They saw they had no supplies, and them being city dwellers, no knowledge of how to live off the land. So, they invited them to live in their villages with them. So they did and they survived.

That is a riot! That is the 3 different pronunciation we have gotten for Manteo! Same with Bodie Lighthouse! People in NC call them one thing, people in Virginia call them something else and then when you look online it says something else! Love hearing all the differences! Now we have to go to Charleston! 😂 We didn't make it all the way up there but it is definitely on the list for the next time we are there!

Oh wow! We were just at Bodie lighthouse about two weeks ago. One of the park rangers did a presentation about German U-boats off of the OBX coast during WWII. The play is actually really good.

We like our marshmallows burnt to a crisp and Ooey Gooey in the middle. We love smores, but you need to try strawberries and marshmallow cream. They are the bomb. Put your strawberry on the stick and then spread some marshmellow cream all around the strawberry, then roast.
So many people have recommended the strawberries with fluff on them! We will definitely have to try that!

We just went to this lighthouse. It was such amazing history. What was so awesome was my nephew wanted a souvenir and he got the key (and the very kind lady at the bookstore said and I have one too) so now he thinks he is so cool because he has a key to a lighthouse. The memories kids make and things they get to see is so awesome!

Great video. You definitely have to come back and see The Lost Colony program. I saw it when I was a kid. Great show. Hope you get up to Corolla, NC and see the wild horses and the weight brothers memorial is great too. Not sure where you guys are going after the OBX. But if you take the ferry back, you should check out Beaufort, NC. A lot of history there. It is where I grew up and a great little town. I don't think there are any campgrounds there, but there are some in cedar point, Atlantic Beach, and Emerald Isle. I look forward to next week's video.

You were so close. The settlement was wiped out by a hurricane and took the people and the buildings out to sea.
Reasoning.
Galveston Hurrican 1901. 6000-8000 deaths. The reason for the number variance is they did not know how many people where there and they could not find people that they did know were there.
Hurrican Dorian swept some 27 wild horses and 17 cows off the island. Later 3 of the cows were found on another island grazing away by Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Point is that storms can do very unpredictable things and 3 years passing even 2 years is enough to cover up any evidence.
Can't imagine how devastating those storms would be back then!
You can take a sighting on the light houses,in daylight, and know your position on the water. The stripes/bands/ and colors told you the different lighthouse

If you like lighthouses you should check out the Jupiter lighthouse in Jupiter Florida it is painted Red and was built on a shell mound.

Saw a special on the history channel in regards to Roanoke colony...if I remember correctly, the jist is that they moved their colony and then were captured by unfriendly indian tribe that took them as slaves to mine copper for them...markers were found that settlers left as clues along trail...but eventually trail markers stopped...so death by disease or such took them as they were captive.

If someone wants to disappear without a trace there are ways. Though 117 seems like they would’ve done some damage as they moved. Odd that they picked up everything and left.
The storms there are so bad that all that was left could have been wiped out and left no trace a couple years later. So many possibilities of what could have happened to them.

Just an FYI Andy Griffith Lived in that area. My grandson has worked at the Lost Colony show for many years. Also as a N.C native I have to correct you on the light house and other pronunciations The light house is pronounced Bow-die and Manteo is pronounced Man-tee-o but you say it fast.
When I saw this as a kid in 5th grade, I thought I was about to see a show of The Andy Griffith show…And to take my kids back to see it was even better
WE have heard that! WE had someone write to us on our last episode that their grandmother acted with Andy Griffith in the show! We hope to see it SOMEDAY!

We've discussed many times how we never learned about the Outer Banks and its history in school. It blows the mind. There is Such incredible history here. Thanks for another awesome video... Being at our home is just a bonus!
Thanks so much for letting us know! We have actually have people tell us a couple different ways, but that way seems to be the majority! 😉 It is crazy how much history isn't taught anymore. That is why this adventure is so important to us so that the girls are able to see all of these places and learn their history in person!

My theory is a hurricane swept them and their fort off the island. I love visiting The Outer Banks but would never live there because of the weather. Bodie Lighthouse is pronounced Beau-dee, not body. I think the grape vine was wisteria. Andy Griffith's home was in Manteo and he rests there. Great video!

The original pronunciation was "body" (which is what we saw when we looked it up) named after all the bodies that washed up on the shore there from the Graveyard of the Atlantic. At some point the locals didn't like that connotation so they started calling it Bow-die. We should always just ask the locals! 😂 Thanks so much for watching!
The grape vine is known as The Mother Vine. It is Scuppernong, a sweet grape that makes really sweet wine. It is something like 200 + years old.
They tought us that Plymouth Plantation was the first until they discovered this mystery.
Still bummed we missed you guys in NC/OBX. Ellen is a lighthouse person. I know she would have a blast touring those. I know we will be in Florida next year in June. Beyond that not sure.

Like you guys talking about Maine this is an area i know very well. First Bodie the "O" is pronounced long at least that's the way i have heard the locals say it. The lost Colony brewery is a great place to stop in for a beer. I have several shirts from there. The road right next to your campground is the one we use when we drive onto the beach then go south toward the inlet. Many theories around the lost colony but the Algonkian Indians left the area and migrated to Northern Virginia along the Potomac to avoid the storms. They tried to get the settlers to join them, but the settlers wouldn't leave and were wiped out by a large storm. Those that survived the storm eventually starved to death. There were no traces because that area gets N'or easters all the time and the sand shifts with the winds.
The Outer Banks were amazing! We even looked up how to pronounce Bodie and the original way is body but the locals changed it years later as they didn't like the connotation as it was named after all the bodies that washed up from the Graveyard of the Atlantic. So many theories as to what happened to the colony! Thanks for watching!

Roanoke Island is on my bucket list. I love watching documentaries that try to figure out what happened. Lots of clues starting to show up and it seems like some of the new DNA evidence they're uncovering shows that they did survive at least for a while because some of the people in the area are connected to them through DNA. Such an interesting mystery!!!
This episode is great. We’ve got to drive to the east coast and check this out. I think the explanation you gave about them thinking they were abandoned, got on a ship and the ship sunk Is the most plausible.
You really do! We were completely blown away by what the Outer Banks has to offer and there is still so much more that we want to go back to see! And considering the craziness of the weather there, it does seem like the most plausible explanation. Such a sad story.

Loved this video . I love all I've seen so far, I miss OBX. It's pronounced , "Bow-die" Island not Bodie...Lol. I am in Roanoke Va. That's the way everyone around here pronounces the Lighthouse and island. Come visit ud here we're in foothills of Blue Ridge Mtns. Lots of trails, hike McAfees Knob. P.S. I climbed Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 2000, a year after they moved it. It was 90 degrees plus and we could not take water bottles up.
