  • Follow along as I show step by step how to use the Milescraft 1309 dowel jig. I show what works well, where I had struggles, and how these were resolved.
    Note: I have no affiliation with Milescraft.
    Along with the jig, the kit contains:
    1/4,5/16, and 3/8 inch dowels with matching drill bits and drill stops.
    Wood glue.
    Dowel Tenon Centers

    Excellent video, this is very helpful as I know how to use dowel jig tools to make edge joint. Without your video I wouldn't know what to do with it. I will watch and follow your instructions carefully when I am ready to install edge joint on melamine board👍

    For anyone wondering why the edge to edge didn't line up, it's because bobby adjusted the fence on the wrong board, to correct this, only adjust the fence with the board that has the dowel in place, that way, you can be sure that the dowel jig is centered. Afterwards, put both your boards together, use your jig towards the new board and line up the dowel in board 1 to fit in the edge of the doweljig and you should be centered on your new board.

    You hit the most important part, the cost! I cannot in anyway justify a $300 biscuit joiner or a $1k festool domino joiner. For basic alignment, these seems to do the job. Thanks!

    • @bobbybuildsit
      @bobbybuildsit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Sure, there is something out there most anybody using dowels would like, but they cost way more than I could justify with my current needs.

    Well-explained. Thanks. I had that same issue where it made a non-centered hole. It can happen when using the 1/4 or 5/16 guide bushings. I noticed if you angle the jig in one direction it centers nicely if you angle it in the other direction, the handle bumps against the board and causes the hole to be misaligned. All the best.

    For the edge issue, I think you misread the instructions. This video is from Milescraft: th-cam.com/video/QALncuFuEgk/w-d-xo.html The edge joint section starts at 4:11

    • @bobbybuildsit
      @bobbybuildsit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      User error was most certainly the issue. Thanks, I'll check it out.

    • @phillipbotha7920
      @phillipbotha7920 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Correct. The jig has to be placed over the corresponding hole then the fence set. This is then transferred to the second piece using the slots to ensure that the placement is the same

    • @woutdezeeuw1604
      @woutdezeeuw1604 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tom Geist, the funny thing about your comment is that the 4:11 time marker is both relevant on this video and the video you referenced. That's like a one in a zillion coincidence!

  • @mcguiganmike
    @mcguiganmike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The edge joint issue was interesting - does the thickness of the board affect how that works? I did not see you make an adjustment on the jig for that and those holes vs the jig do not look adjustable for board thickness.
    Appreciate this - I have the Kreg system which uses screws for joints, but I have to refresh my memory on that system every time I use it and would rather do dowels for some work.

    • @bobbybuildsit
      @bobbybuildsit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mike ,the thickness of the board does play a role. I may have not had the jig up against board one perfectly tight thus causing that hole to be off center a bit then carrying over to board two.
      The only adjustments are how tight the pegs are up against the board, any little bit will move the bushing, and adjusting the fence. I think I just need more practice with the jig and possibly work out a better clamping system.
      Thank you for watching, if you have any other questions I'll be glad help.

    Bobby, what is the platform you are doing this project on? I like that you can slide the clamps onto it,

  • @wollins2

    What are the "dowel centers" used for?

    • @bobbybuildsit
      @bobbybuildsit  ปีที่แล้ว

      To the extent of my knowledge, those are for time when the work piece is too small for the jig to catch. You can drill a hole in one piece, insert the dowel center into that hole, and press where it needs to go on the other piece. Essentially a marketing gauge. I don't love how I've explained this so I'll try and make a video response ad well.

    Can you do a 45 degree bevel or miter dowel joint with this jig?

    • @bobbybuildsit
      @bobbybuildsit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure, as I haven't tried. I think a dowelmax style may be easier to use for that. Some exist that aren't expensive like a dowelmax.

      @@bobbybuildsit I hope you do a video of this. I'd be interested to see a comparison of this with the Milescraft. I had bought the milescraft dowel jig kit for about $20 half a year ago and have not used it yet. Been using pocket holes mostly for joining pieces together. Maybe you recommend something cheaper then dowelmax that's out there for doing 45 degree bevel/miter edge joining.

    You set the jig incorrectly for the edge to edge configuration. That is why your boards didn’t line up. I’m not bashing you just giving you a heads up. Watch the official milescraft video to see where you went wrong. But great job otherwise.

    This is among the worst dowel jigs in existance. It's also the cheapest which is why a lot of people buy it. I bought it, used it a few trimes, then bought a Jessem dowel jig because I was tired of getting unacceptable results with the Milescraft jig. Mielscraft has a few decent items. This just isn't one of them.

    • @bobbybuildsit

      I was looking for a comment that this might not be the best doweling jig. Seems like it takes a lot more time to accomplish the goal. Saving money is great but not at the expense of being inefficient with your time.
