I'm only 7 minutes into the second video and I can feel the love that these parents have for their son through the computer screen. I love watching them smile at their son anytime he speaks. It's amazing. Congratulations to your awesome family.
Actually, I felt incredibly concern and disheartened seeing poor John sit there while his father attempted to justify LDS institutionalized homophobia...I am glad to know they have left this high control group that continues to promote such bigotry.
Seeing parents truly Love their children Unconditionally is a really beautiful thing!!! I aspire to have that kind of closeness with my children. This family is an inspiration.
I'm exmormon and yet my heart broke for them. It's a really painful process and anger and sadness when making the journey. I'm glad they're taking the steps; I wish I could help take away the pain but each person's pain is different, just as their journey was different. Love this couple.
I love this family. I'm an atheist. I wasn't raised in any faith but I have original pioneer Mormon ancestors so the church has always been interesting to me. To the Mom: thank you for choosing your child over your church. Thanks for being Mama Dragon from day one. The people who cast their children helpless out into the wild in order to appease their church are simply horrible human beings. If your church is telling you to do evil, leave. You do not need to filter your life through a church or god in order to be a good person and be an asset to your community. Just be good. The message is the same if you choose to stay in a church. Just be good. To the Dad: You are awesome too. Those extra long hugs said so much. Gay people call other gay people "family" because so many of us have to build a new family after being rejected by our original family. Some of those hugs were saying "Thank you for caring for, supporting and loving our young family member." Some were probably hugging you as a substitute for their own family that will not hug them, or hug them falsely, without love or respect. And to the kid: You are amazing. You exhibited so much bravery by coming out early and I know it wasn't entirely selfish, you wanted to help other gay kids see being open was safe. Thanks to all of you for sharing these stories. I honestly feel that had you grown up non-religious, you'd still be wonderful people, as you are today.
Attitudes do need to change, but there are a lot of us who get it and who do care. Sometimes it does depend on who the leader is and what experiences they have had. I struggled as a Bishop to always do the right thing. I hope that I erred on the side of compassion.
The dad is wearing a black wedding band. Strange since black ones mean your spouse is dead! (Cf Black Plague, undertakers wear black, hearses are black, one wears black to funerals, etc. And black bands made of tungsten are very cheap ~$10 since tungsten is a scrap metal.)
I absolutely love this! I am a gay mormon, I came out back in August of 2014 and through the next few months throughout my senior year of high school. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico but I'm moving to Arizona for school in August. I didn't hear where in Arizona Meg, Jake, and Jon live but I'd love to get in touch with them. I was actually planning to post a coming out video sometime within the next couple weeks on a separate channel but I'd love to get in contact with the family. If you see this please respond, I'd love to talk to you
This family's experience and the interview with the young man who is a dancer with tremendous talent, (Swimmerer ?) really changed my way of looking at the world. I have never been non-accepting of gay and lesbian people and as far back as junior high, I got knocked around by some of the larger, Fundamental Mormon crowd for saying that you don't decide to be gay or straight. Nor do you harass the kids who were thought to be gay, to "fix them into being normal". Yet, the two videos, present really great people, the kind you are proud to claim as friends, the family next door type, dealing with an ugliness that no one should have to waste a nanosecond thinking about. I'm not saying that other families with gay kids aren't salt of the earth people, just that for whatever reason I was ready for a more empathetic portrayal, a deeper understanding, and Mormon Stories gave it to me. If you can watch the two interviews yet be unmoved, still hiding behind the bigotry as presented by "God's Chosen", baby they won't need a scalpel for your heart surgery, but a pile driver.
No doubt the LDS is not a safe place for anyone that is gay. I applaud them for removing their son from this toxic organization. Whenever I see the Mormon, Inc. comments, I think about all the businesses, shopping malls and investment accounts owned and controlled by LDS Church. It is just another business pushing their agenda. And there is no real truth in its doctrine. It is just a business.
I am confused. Having same sex feelings isn't a sin. The rule is to live the law of chastity which is for all members straight or gay. There are active gay members in the church and are supported by their fellow members. I live outside the USA and do sometimes wonder if we are just more accepting. I know on the millionaire matchmaker, she says that the European woman have a 10 year maturity advantage over the USA women, maybe its the same in the church. Its sad to hear that you did not get better support and felt the need to leave. Good job in supporting your son.
A true spiritual home is important to our well-being. There are accepting Christian churches you and your family can attend. You'll find that where Christ is truly first, other issues fall into place.
sorry to hear you didn't feel welcome at church the week after Jon CAME OUT. a lot of this has to do with the CULTURE of the people in the ward (not neccessarily the church itself). if you live in a ward that is very diverse (which means probably not in utah), people would be more open and friendly. I think LDS members are starting to get it (at least the younger generation). but the older generation? very doubtful. and you would probably find that to be the case in other organized religions as well. I think these are the best parents for jon. they deserve praise for being fearless in putting jon first at all times. I just hope every gay LDS kid can end up with parents like this. I think God puts gay kids with many strict religious people to see if the parents can truly LOVE their child UNCONDITIONALLY. and unfortunately, I believe many of those parents fail (they put there SELFISH GREED about the best interests of their child). and although they believe FREE AGENCY is essential to gods eternal plan, they DO NOT BELIEVE IN IT......when it comes to being their child and being gay.
I'm wondering if it's hatred that they have or are you just saying hatred because the church speaks out against homosexuality. God's word speaks out against homosexuality, adultery, theft, stealing and other sins. Yes.... they are called sins. The church MUST be in agreement with the Word of God. We must crucify the flesh, take up our cross. There is no middle ground with sin. We are either for God or against him. We cannot serve 2 masters. So the church can say we love these people but we cannot be in agreement with their lifestyle of homosexuality just the same as the church cannot be in agreement with fornication or adultery. I'm not LDS but l'm a believer of God's Word. Please don't say that people hate just because they cannot accept the lifestyle of homosexuality.
Hopefully there will come a day when LGBT folks will not have to explain theirselves to anyone..being gay will be no different than being straight..Poor kid..he needs to get out of that family!! ASAP!!!
Hateful angry people, will always be hateful and angry, it doesnt make sense and neither are many things that they do. I include people in the church too. Some of the people in the church really need to grow up and start understanding the turmoil people are going through and respond to their needs. They need to be accepting and recognise this is a genetic development that can still encompass living the gospel guidelines. We cant afford to lose good people due to neanderthal attitudes. The church is getting there, it is just taking its time, but I think the Utah type saints are slower to respond that the rest of us in outside the central hub.
@@grampagraham3075 It's not a Neanderthal attitude. It's actually written in the Holy Bible. Men shall not lie with men as he does with women. Its an abomination. Churches are required to be in agreement with the Bible otherwise they are not teaching truth. The church should not be teaching their own gospel that is not the true word of God so churches that happily accept homosexuality without calling it out with love and compassion and marrying them are an abomination in the eyes of a Holy God
Aubrey Kristine Kapcsos well it’s very straightforward. They share their journey and help educate people how to face with their kids coming out gay or whatever. And that sexuality shouldn’t be a big issue and that gay people do exist and they shouldn’t be treated any different. :)
It is sad that we call people who accept differences somehow special. This boy is who he is, we should not have to even think of whether we accept him or not. I am left handed with blue eyes should I be happy others accept me?
I am so sorry for this couple and their unfortunate situation. You have no idea what you are missing.and what you have failed to provide for John. I grew up as a gay man (third gender) raised in the LDS church. I am still fabulous and still am a active member of the church. If only you would look past the view of men and how men judged you and your decision to support your son. Why would you even think for a minute that your bishop would provide answers for you?. I wish you could be more patience and tolerance and allowed John to grow through thick and thin so that he would become the person he ought to be. May God bless you and may you find peace in your heart and find your way back to the church..
Why is it these people always say the church did this, the church felt that, and not GOD said this, or GOD thinks this...were these people brain washed by the Mormon religion?....I always think what does GOD think about this, what would Jesus say about this, would HE approve of me doing this,....these people are brainwashed by this cult. I think if they asked the question what would GOD say about this (gayhood)....they already know the answer and know it violates not only natural law but all other laws from GOD.
This poor gay kid is thinking, "You guys are suppose to be my Mormon parents and suppose to be looking out for my best spiritual interest...not condoning my sinful lifestyle!" Matt. 10:37...anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Jesus is saying do not condone or conform to sin even it is your own relative. Get a clue about what GOD loves!

@@goodgirlkay There is also the term throughout this video: "I love and accept you ...but."

His mom really gets it, especially about the coming of age issues. I'm really impressed with her.
Christopher 3D She "gets" being a control freak.
With people like these, coming out would be a graceful and generous thing. This is a model for how parents should handle this.
Dude,
I agree with every point. Thanks.
A+ Parenting. A+ child. A+ People

God loves every single person. Love is love, it doesn't matter at what ! Being yourself is also part of loving ourselves the way we are. Peace.
Ugh, I hate when girls say they want a gay best friend. We're not trinkets, were people.
You don't become "best friends" with a trinket, but I think I can understand where you're coming from.
Say it louder for the people in the back! Also its sets a sterotype being gay is about sexuality little to do with personality.
