The 1.38 kWh figure derived by dividing total electricity by seat count is the cost for moving that seat for the full "free electricity) ride. The rider is paying a prorated cost of all the material. moving and static, that goes into providing the facilities to consume that energy and incidentally move the Px with it. That considers that you cannot move just one seat over that distance. Px are also paying for schedule convenience since the train is seldom full. Oh dear, I am getting into how mercantilism works. (The historical reason for hatred of the people who provide convenient shopping without appearing to do anything to earn their fortunes, great or small.) I suspect the total figure is the one that is more important if one could extract actual rider counts, distances ridden, and comparisons for automobile owners. Even if the trains come with a premium cost for the travel there are good reasons for arriving rested rather than frazzled by dealing with automotive traffic. At any rate, the electricity costs per mile or per passenger are small compared to the big numbers represented by the rail network and the apparatus riding on it. {^_-}
